Video editing - Pinnacle studio can utilise Nvidia CUDA (just make sure you turn on hardware acceleration in option menu).
If you are willing to forgo quad core, there are more choices  hmm.gif
If a model come with 4GB or less RAM standard spec, you could add in more RAM if there is empty RAM slot (4GB ~ RM100, 8GB ~ RM200).

Did a check on my old desktop i5-750 4Gb, CPU maxed out using MATLAB while just 2-2.5Gb use of RAM. Would that suggest go for an i7? or are the i5 that mush faster now?

Thanks

Looking for a laptop for my sister

1. Preferred Brand - any brand with good after sale service is a bonus
2. Budget - 1.5k
3. Usage - college works, photoshop
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - light, good battery life, reasonable performance, upgradeable to 8gb ram?

So my not so insentive research has found;-
NP905S3G-K01 | A6 QC 1.4 | 4GB | 128GB | AMD HD8250 | 13.3'' | W8 | WHT / 2YRS | RM1,559 - very light weight 1.5kg i think, dedicated vcard, SSD!, but is AMD any good?
G500s-0944 | i3-3110 | 2GB | 500GB | NV GT720 2GB | 15.6" | DOS | FREE WIRELESS MOUSE | RM1,499 - quite light weight, specs reasonable
A550CC-XX308/309/307 | i3-3217 | 4GB | 500GB | NV GT720 2GB | 15.6" | DOS | WHT,GRAY & RED | RM1,559

Or any other recommendation? If i go for the samsung ok not?

if by "work" you mean MS Words, Excel, then you don't need powerful CPU or discrete GPU for your usage.

Inspiron 15, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1299[2.25kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell, Linux; W8SL@RM1499
cheap model like this is powerful enough for your usage. You can use the remaining of your budget to get a SSD (256GB ~ RM600) and swap with the HDD (keep as external storage for your movie).

Inspiron 15 7000, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + (1366x768; Touch) @RM2899[2.6kg], 6GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr
alternatively, you can go for this. look good.

Anyway, extend Dell on site warranty to 3 years for ~ RM250.

Prices are RSP, negotiable.

that i5-750 desktop CPU is quad core (but only 4 threads), while laptop i5 is only duo core but also 4 threads (hyper-threading).
Don't really has the benchmark to compare i5-750 desktop vs a Haswell mobile (say i5-4200U), but my guess is that they are about even laugh.gif

Matlab (the newer version, and / or if you use the Parallel Computing Toolbox) can take advantage of multi-core very well.

When you observed the CPU max out, did all 4 core max to 100% or just 1 core? Max out for how long?

1. Any reputable brand (Windows only)
2. 2.5K
3. Daily study use (assignments, projects), Entertainment (movies)
4. Around 15

Extra:
Easy to be carried around (thin, light), Less heat dissipation, Removable battery, Long battery life, Vibrant display

At least i5, 500Gb Memory and 4Gb RAM

Thank you smile.gif
*
15" will not be light (i.e. < 2kg)
If you want thin, then the battery normally will be within the body shell.
You want heat to dissipate (not build up within the laptop).
You want good thermal profile, but thin laptop normal has worse thermal profile.
For your budget, you will not get very good screen panel (e.g. IPS), just hope for finding TN panel that you can tolerate.
If "assignment, projects" mean using MS Office, then you don't need powerful CPU or discrete GPU. i3 and Intel HD is more than sufficient.

There is no laptop that tick all your box.

Book 9 Lite NP905S3G-K01MY, AMD A6-1450 + AMD HD8250 + 128GB SSD@RM1999[1.58kg], 4GB, W8
That particular CPU is only about Intel Celeron level, will struggle depend on the level of photoshopping you do.
It will probably feel the most responsive among the three due to the SSD.

G500S, i3-3110M + Nvidia GT720M@RM1499, 2GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
has the most powerful CPU among the 3 models. You probably has not negotiated the price.

A550CC-XX307/308/309, i3-3217U + Nvidia GT720M@RM1699[2.3kg], 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Both G500S and A550CC are > 2kg, won't call them light.
None of them has particularly good battery run time (expect ~ 4 hrs surfing hmm.gif ). Book 9 Lite due to the small battery, G500S due to the M CPU, A550CC due to the "relatively" small battery for 15".
The Book 9 Lite is ok, but you will probably curse when you use it for photoshop. iinm, RAM is soldered, there is no empty RAM slot for upgrade.

If you negotiate, you can probably get these within your budget:
Acer
E1-472G-54204G50, i5- 4200U + Nvidia GT720M@RM1699, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS
Dell
Inspiron 14, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT720M@RM1699 [1.99kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), Linux, 6 cell; W8.1SL@RM1899
HP
Pavilion 14-N010AX, A10-5745M + AMD HD8610/8670M@RM1699[2.01kg], 4GB, 500GB, Linux; W8@RM1899

Thank you for the reply.  rclxms.gif
I always thought that thinner laptop = better thermal profile  sweat.gif
Changed my list:

1. Any reputable brand (Windows only)
2. 2.5K
3. Daily study use (assignments, projects), Entertainment (movies)
4. 13 - 15

Extra:
Thin, Light, OK heat dissipation, Long battery life, OK display

At least 500Gb Memory and 4Gb RAM
Some told me to get at least i5 because i3 are mostly old models, any advice?  hmm.gif

Any laptops that is the nearest to what I'm looking for? Thanks again  notworthy.gif

You don't need i5. The latest gen (Haswell) also has i3 CPU.

Dell
Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1899, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
Vostro 5470, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm) + (1366x768;touch)@RM2149, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell
Inspiron 14 7000, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)@RM2699[2.02kg], 6GB(soldered), , W8SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr, No ODD

Lenovo
S410p, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400M@RM1699[2.1kg], 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
FreeDOS mean you need to get and install OS yourself.
Use the remaining of your budget, if any, to extend warranty (Dell to 3 years ~ RM250).

when you mentioned game, what kind of game titles do you play? if it is those flash and casual games, you can choose ultrabooks. anyway, lets go for heavy game title options 1st :

Dell
Vostro 5470, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2249, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W8, 3-cell

HP
Pavilion 14-N059TX, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099[2.03kg], 4GB, 750GB, W8; colors: silver/black

ASUS
K451LB-WX071H, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199, 4GB, 750GB, W8

Lenovo
Z510, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT740M@RM2799[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 yrs

Acer
V5-573PG-74504G50r, i5-4500U + Nvidia GT750M + (1366x768; touch)@RM2899, 4GB, 500GB, W8

prices are RRP and negotiable.

Yes all four and they stayed above 85% throughout the simulation (Matrix based optimization in conjunction with ODE). The total simulation is ~3 min, but just ~2min of the heavy part simulation.

Then you better go for i7 quad core mobile CPU if you want to shorten the simulation time.

If you prefer Haswell (4th gen) i7, then the cheapest currently:

Lenovo
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT755M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 4GB, 1TB, DOS, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty
Z510, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT740M@RM2799[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 yrs

Negotiate, and it should be only slightly above your budget.

Haha, no doubt, MacBook meets my requirement.

If I go for AIR, it's non FHD display, but its non-glossy.

if I go for Pro, its Retina, but its glossy. And I don't really like glossy.

and overall, I don't really like OSX. I'm using a MBP 2010 atm, and its running Windows 99.9% of the time laugh.gif
