i just came back from uni pre-depature briefing, the uni people says no need bring maggie mee, as there are a lot of asian stores there...but the maggie mee there is not cheap, after convert the price into ringgit, at least RM1.50 per pack...and should we apply 'International student card' and 'Nx2d'(i can't remember the name, just roughly like this) Card? as the travel agent called MSL said these cards are useful cause got discount everywhere? Actually all these benefits we can actually have it by our uni student card as well, isn't it?  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif one more month leave..........

I THINK the card they were toking about is the one where u have to fill in the form (in the Read & Return blue book) and send it back to them

I brought over a few packets of curry powder to UK. The ones that are ready packed and sold in Carrefour. RM1 per packet. It is almost dollar to dollar in UK. smile.gif

Yup, those Malaysian made spices are worth more than dry noodles or other common asian ingredients..

Examples:

1) True Malaysian raw 'Belacan' <-- Seriously! A must have! Smuggle it if you have too!

2) Real 'Cencaluk' <-- This is good stuff! You can't get this from anywhere! Heck, I 'll pay US20.00 a bottle if I can find it. Don't go for the look-alike imitation shrimp paste from Indonesia or Vietnam or Thailand, they taste awful!

3) Your mom's secret recipes - if you've never cook a dish before, LEARN it now before you leave! biggrin.gif

Hohoho.. luckily i'm not a big fan of belance or cencaluk.
However, try to bring some spices over to UK!! I do love to eat spicy food!! Packet ones! There are asian stores here but I just think it's kinda expensive to buy here. You can buy quite a lot frm Malaysia!
For instant noodles, plz bring at least one packet of maggie mee or two.

Instant noodles here are quite cheap (30p, 50p, 70p) - dun convert them
But just bring one packet in case u dun get used to UK food. Can still eat maggie hehe for a few times.

Bring some Ho Yan ho (herbs drink) as usually there'll be a lot of ppl coughing at the beginning of new sem. You might get cold easily too especially when winter is coming!! U may not get fever, but u will just cough with phlegms only. That's terrible.

i dunno what's wif NX2d card. For Itnernational student card, so far i never use it before in UK. Cause you can apply for National Union student card (www.nusonline.co.uk). However, once you come back to malaysia, you can show the international student card to prove that u r a student studying overseas instead of showing ur student ID from ur university. (use it if u want to buy movie tickets)

You're referring to the NX2 card, issued by the National Express (think Transnasional etc, but with up to date and clean and on-time coaches). It gives you up to 33% discount on the National Express coaches. It has nothing to do with your university.

Personally I just use my Young Person's Railcard and move around by train.

On what else you can bring, you can bring some Pill Chi Kit (those for stomachache ones because they come in pretty handy when you need'em).

There are those extremely cheap instant noodles like Morrisons or Tesco branded instant noodles, 8p a pack. Also, you can consider bringing some packed herbs or soups like those bak kut teh or some gingseng chicken soup and etc smile.gif

Yes it'll be alot cheaper but depending on where you are going the journey could take a very long time. In Malaysia, our coaches are definitely alot faster. For eg, a 4hr coach journey in Malaysia could take up to 8-9hrs or more in the UK because of the countless stops they make and the waiting and changing of coaches involved.

The NX2 card for me is useless because most of the times it only give you up to 10-15% off. There are plenty of National Express promotional codes floating around that give you 10-20% off so I dont bother with the NX2 card. A railcard can save you alot more and is more useful imho.

since I stay in Birmingham, i would never take a coach to Scotland!!! It takes you 9 - 10 hours to go there!!!
In UK, you will always get cheaper price if you book EARLY!! (budget airlines)
So piece of advice, never do things last minute!!!
There are lots of coaches like megabus or nationalexpress that go to London for 1 only but you really need to book early to do that.

Soy sauce? Isn't it available there? I know it will probably be a little more expensive, but at least I can save luggage space

Not those ordinary soy sauce. Thick ones. The one they used to fry hokkien mee or fried kuey teow.

As for normal soy sauce, sure you could get it in UK. But some brands taste weird. Some taste just fine.

Dont' taste them, eat them to fill up your stomach, that's it. Besides, microwave food isn't that healthy as well, even if it's just some simple dish, eat fresh food like vege and stuff.

Also, microwave food is kinda expensive as well, if you wanna save on your food, cooking yourself is one of the best choices around.

*Will go hunt for some Malaysian stuff at China Town tomorrow.
