1. u only need to declare cash. bank drafts, travelers cheques etc should be ok.

I attended the pre-departure briefing by British Council and they informed us that we need to declare bank drafts, traveller's cheques, etc if they all come up to >10,000 euros or equivalent

I am leaving to London, Hendon on Sept to further my degree program at Middlesex University, anyone lived around that area?

Few questions,

1. Where can I head over to if I fall sick unfortunately?

2. Do I need a bank account in order to obtain a National Insurance Number?

3. What is the phone number of NI center so I could make an appointment with them.

4. What kind of public transport I could take from Hendon to the NI center?

Thank you for replying.

QUOTE(Syegg @ Jul 27 2008, 12:13 PM)
Hi guys, I'm going to UK in this sept, further my master degree 1 year in Sheffield university. I had climb this thread for almost 1 week, day and night..yet haven't finished it!! damn lot man!

However, i had few questions here. icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif
1. it is better to bring along bank draft there or just T/T there?as i read from the previous, it quite hard to apply if i din have any bank draft in hand? and if i bring along bank draft around gbp20k, i need to declare it to the UK immigration before i fly?i m taking SQ anyway.

2. I'm not planning to take university accommodation as i found out that the accommodation out there is a lot cheaper compare to uni one. BTW, what is the different between Studio and one bed room apartment there? is it what they said,if studio there must be single occupant? one room apartment can be more, like couple? coz the price is different for both even thought same unit same facilities and everything is the same. If i turn up with a private sector accommodation, i need to register with the student union? is it advisable to take private accommodation ?

3. I'm going with my gf, and planning to get a room outside, as we can save a lot and can cook somemore to squeeze up the living expenses as the uni accommodation for studio didn't allow 2 person. so, any recommendation for us? monthly budget not exceed 500per month, i guess my campus is located somewhere at S3,so, if i could taking up an one room apartment with fully furnished somewhere there would be fantastic. no need to walk so far. coz i'm taking MSc ENG control system and she is taking management international business.

4. Regarding the internet broadband, since watching tv have to be licensed, then what about internet tv online streaming?like some of the software like pplive? we need to register with the authorities?

thanks for reply and information!! very sorry if i repeated the question had been ask by others..coz i hardly to read all .. rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif
advice and opinion is badly needed..thanks very much

1. bring bank draft of £10000, hence no need for declaration or whatsoever and TT the rest when you have set up an account. with TT, you will need a bank account first. but with bank draft, you can give to the bank, so when you account has been setup, you will have money immediately.

2. be aware that most private accommodation doesnt includes utilities bills, internet bills etc which can come to about £50-100 permonth. not advisable if you are new in uk. could be really troublesome and tedious processes. and you could easily spent even more because of the utilities bills etc. as for uni accommodation, hassle free, eveything included etc, so as services if any stuff isn't working well (e.g. boiler, lighting etc).

3. not advisable.

4. who cares.

QUOTE(Syegg @ Jul 27 2008, 09:49 PM)
Further questions...

1. what do u guys doing during weekend?working?is there anyone of u doing the kind of business like online business?selling at ebay?  cool2.gif

2. Is there the racist serious over Sheffield sweat.gif sweat.gif ? do any of u guys encounter with the fight between Asian and white? how about the security over there? high crime rate?

3. The adapter of the electricity isit the same as in malaysia? or i need to purchase a so called international adapter for my all kind of plugs?like laptop..ipods and so on?

Thank for info as well as reply...the answers badly needed... icon_question.gif  icon_question.gif

1. sleep and do grocery. you can do ebay of course if you want, sold a few things there years ago.

2. racist? not obvious, actualy they are quite friendly, except those stupid teenagers.

3. same.

1. make sure you register to a doctor so called general practitioner GP here as soon as you get here. anything, just make an appointment and be prepared that some of them takes a few days before you can see them. as for minor illness e.g. flu, cold, cough, stomache etc, visit your local pharmacy is more than sufficient.

2. not necessary, most important things are proof of address, passport, proof of employment or evidence of you actively looking for job.

3. google it. you can easily get them from the internet.

4. no comment. laugh.gif

This is kinda a weird question. Normally in student dorm what size bed they provide, single or super single? I'd say single but they have some huge kids there too (country with the biggest obese population and all that), so I have to be sure.

Bringing my bed sheets from here.

Concerning mobile phone packages, what would be considered a good deal? Lets say a 20 to 25 pounds per month package, what standard phone is bundled in, with how many free minutes, and how much free texts, ect.

Thanks in advance sempais biggrin.gif

it's depends on which network and what phone do you want. if your budget is £20-£25 per month, i guess you can get 200 min+100 text and a phone like nokia 6300. If you like a better deal and don't mind have trouble, you can go for cashback deal. sometimes you can get 12 months contract and 12 months cashback. this means you need to send your bill in certain month to the company and they will send a cheque to you. This is no guarantee that you will get the cheques, as long you follow all their requirements.. then you will get it. oh, my advice is go for big company like carphonewarehous and e2save.

student rent house you are referring is private renting? if yes, it's depends on the landlord/landlady.... they maybe set some rules like no party or you can't bring any friends to overnight. but some of them, don't mind as long you pay extra £10-£20 per day for your friend (if a short-term stay, like few days or weeks..). But usually, when you sign contract, they will make sure actual number of ppl. there's some rules for landlord, normal house for renting, the maximum ppl to stay in the house is not more than 4 ppl, if more than that, they need to apply a license for that. erm.. i not quite know about it.. i was told there's one rules for landlord.
there's 2 types of room for renting, one is single room (for one ppl) and double room (for couple or share with friend).. of coz the price is not the same...

Another question. Can an undergraduate/postgraduate student have a credit transfer to any UK universities from any local universities (private or gov) for 2nd or 3rd year?

you mean transferring credit to UK university? for undergraduate, i assume you can but again it's depends on your course and which uni you are going to. as some uni have different system... you can directly email them. but for postgraduate, i not sure which postgraduate you are referring to, phd or master? So far, for phd, i never heard transfer credit to finish the degree before. for master, again, just like undergraduate, depends on the uni.

you can apply if you have evidence that you are actively seeking employment e.g. letter of interview appointment. they are quite strict at that. until you can have proof of employment.

what to get ready of? read the whole thread. you will get general idea.

usually for servicing/claiming warranty, you will have to post to the manufacturer HQ somewhere in England mostly.

if you are renting a room with single bed, bring just a standard single bed size sheet. it will fit both single and smaller anyway.

they have single bed that is even smaller than the standard single bed, most abundant in uni accommodation particularly flat type.

they even have quarter bed size, a slightly smaller double bed. laugh.gif

refer to their website (o2, vodafone, t-mobile, 3, virgin etc) and you will get the idea of the standard package.

£25 per month for 12 months can get you nokia 6300 with about 200 minutes and 100 text. something like that.

if the contract / the room is meant for single occupancy, for sure you cannot squeeze or rent it out to another person.

simply said, unlike malaysia. even if they room is the size of 3 bedrooms combined, if the contract is for single occupancy, then it is. you will not win even if you argue hard, health and safety rules.

Now I'm opting for private accommodations and not uni accommodation. 96 per week is much too steep for me, so actively looking for someplace to stay on private property. Any tips? I'm browsing through gumtree now and sent emails to around 5 people. Need place to stay in Cheltenham. Now price range between 65 to 80 pounds per week.

Should I arrange for a short-term accommodation then look for a new one or should I just arrange for the whole year one-shot?

no other cheaper options from uni accommodation?

private accommodation can be quite troublesome to newcomer. some landlord/lady/agency is really dodgy, promise everything when viewing but never delivered.

a more viable seeking method is via agency. but of course you have to be in here before you can ask them to look for you.
