Got my room offer today. 96 per week ensuite, near town, bus to u compounds, 99 students only in residence hall.

Just to check. Are rooms usually shared w/ another person or is it just for one person?

one person per room. 'x' room per flat/house sharing a kitchen and 1-2 toilets (except ensuite). twin bed in a room is rare in uni accommodation unless in london, seen those in LSE.

btw what uni? nice student no. but if people know that no. belongs to you, you have nothing to hide on the result / notice board.

Imperial also had two-to-a-room halls. Don't know if they still do.

university of edinburgh is the most prestigious 1
and it's a really beautiful city
it'll be my top choice IF i'm allowed to go UK later
not really sure which is the best uni though
and i heard from my seniors (IMU alumni) in UK saying that it'll be easier for Scottish medicine graduate to work in England than English graduate to work in Scotland
again not really sure

damn. u're right. i missed nottingham. should be one of the biggest concentration of malaysian undergraduates.

I really afraid that my question would be out of topic, but please answer if can =).

Is nottingham a good place(environment and social living) to study? My friend who are also my classmate, confirmed going to Nottingham campus in Malaysia for the foundation and other 2 years and later to Nottingham uni in England to continue her MPharm Degree and minor musics after SPM (now we are only Form 4). Well, that was her father's decision and he claimed that it's one of the best universities for Pharmacy course. She is worried being alone and her parents couldn't come over to England to visit her as her brothers and sisters are still studying secondary (by that time). I can't come along because I have set UK for my postgraduate (if I am able to).

What do you guys think, is that place safe for her or you guys would like to suggest her to study her MPharm in Manchester? Any other suggestions?

unlike most UK universities which doesnt have its own compound, nottingham university is quite similar to malaysian universities - it has a dedicated campus where everything is student oriented. this simply means better environment for students, more security, more private and generally good community support. dont worry too much about the crime rates though. it's not as bad most people think. notthingham is a big city, and crimes usually occur at a different part of the city, normally the dodgy places.

also, nottingham has one of the most beautiful and scenic campus in england.

I am pretty sad when most of UK universities offered such an expensive fee for international students like us. For UK/Euro Citizens, the fees were only 3200++ pounds per course while for international students, arts 9000++ pounds, science 12000++ pounds and clinical course are 23000++. It's like "kena gandakan". I hope they wont charge that high for my time. As I know, Malaysia University fees the difference between international and local is only from RM 4000-8000. T.T

If I'm not mistaken, the fees in UK increase gradually. That's what happened to me last time.

it is. like azarimy has said, nott's uni campus is among the best in uk, it is huge and pretty particularly in autumn and spring. it provides really good study environment, quite far from the city centre/shopping area.

and yes nott;s is among the city with highest gang crime yet, but they are location dependant as well. a student wont usually get to those black area for no reason.

and nott's uni pharmacy school is among the top in uk. well not that she is going doing foundation in msia notts campus, but is 2+2 pharmacy twinning program. which is a good choice if pharmacy is her passion. well dont worry of feeling lonely actually, homesick definitely there is, but take it as a lifetime experiences of capable to study and live in a foreign country. nott uni is one of the uni with most malaysian as well. and with 2+2 notts pharmacy program, very likely she will come together the whole bunch of friends of same year, so that lonely is out of the question.

MPharm in manchester, AFAIK, if she wanted to do MPharm in manchester, she will have to come to UK for 4 years MPharm degree.

well, like youngkies said, Nottingham is having the top 10 crime list. But don't worry, Nottingham University is far from black area. As long bring small amount cash with you, and hang around city center during day time, you will be alright. it's quite safe, although a lot ppl said nottingham is having very high crime percentage. Nottingham is just like KL, busy city, shopping mall, restaurants, pubs and cinema.. but again, you need to be careful and stay alert everytime you walking alone.

don't worry being alone, there's a lot gals are coming to uk and study by herself.... after quite some time, she will get knows new friends... when gals coming alone and study, this will train her be more independent and more tough. smile.gif

Beside, MPharm is a good option if you like to work in uk... as getting a secure job in pharmacy is more easier compare to others field. at least you will have less visa problem.. am i right youngkies?? lol...

For Manchester, there's crime happen either. crime happen every where, place like cambridge also has crime happen. As long you stay alert, and careful... you will be alright...

Hi guys, I'm going to UK in this sept, further my master degree 1 year in Sheffield university. I had climb this thread for almost 1 week, day and night..yet haven't finished it!! damn lot man!

However, i had few questions here. icon_question.gif icon_question.gif
1. it is better to bring along bank draft there or just T/T there?as i read from the previous, it quite hard to apply if i din have any bank draft in hand? and if i bring along bank draft around gbp20k, i need to declare it to the UK immigration before i fly?i m taking SQ anyway.

2. I'm not planning to take university accommodation as i found out that the accommodation out there is a lot cheaper compare to uni one. BTW, what is the different between Studio and one bed room apartment there? is it what they said,if studio there must be single occupant? one room apartment can be more, like couple? coz the price is different for both even thought same unit same facilities and everything is the same. If i turn up with a private sector accommodation, i need to register with the student union? is it advisable to take private accommodation ?

3. I'm going with my gf, and planning to get a room outside, as we can save a lot and can cook somemore to squeeze up the living expenses as the uni accommodation for studio didn't allow 2 person. so, any recommendation for us? monthly budget not exceed 500per month, i guess my campus is located somewhere at S3,so, if i could taking up an one room apartment with fully furnished somewhere there would be fantastic. no need to walk so far. coz i'm taking MSc ENG control system and she is taking management international business.

4. Regarding the internet broadband, since watching tv have to be licensed, then what about internet tv online streaming?like some of the software like pplive? we need to register with the authorities?

thanks for reply and information!! very sorry if i repeated the question had been ask by others..coz i hardly to read all .. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif
advice and opinion is badly needed..thanks very much

1. weekend? lepak laaaa. trust me, the brits LOVE to lepak on sundays. so virtually all the shops will be closed on sundays. nobody wants to work on weekends except immigrants or students.

2. sheffield are quite laid back compared to other cities. racism? not around me. u should know that pakistani/indians/middle easterners make up almost equal to the number of white british here. crime rate in sheffield is pretty low. quite safe and secure.

3. yes, it's the same.

1. u only need to declare cash. bank drafts, travelers cheques etc should be ok.

2. studio unit has no rooms except bathroom. heck, some studio units didnt have a proper bathroom, just a corner and a curtain LOL. one bedroom apartment could consist of a combined living+dining+kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. so it has more compartmentalization, although no necessarily bigger than a studio unit. whether it is a single occupant or not depends on the agreement/contract. yes, the price is different if u're a couple bcoz of legal issues (between the landlord and the local authorities).

u're not required to register ur private sector accommodation. it's up to u whether to take it or not.

3. is ur girlfriend working, studying or just bumming around becoming ur sex slave? biggrin.gif. either way, each will have different implications. still, it depends on ur agreement with the landlord.

4. i'm not sure.
