I have trouble playing some type of "r2"~"r32" extension video files. It appeared to be icons of "winrar". When I opened them using winrar, they are compressed video files inside and a 70mb zip file contained an 700mb video file. Suspected to be DVD format but I can't seem to find the right player to play them. Anyone could help me with this?

The only way to play those files is by extracting them.If you want to save few Gig's, I think there is not many choice you can opt for.

Ensure you have latest DirectX runtime and video driver installed. This error is due to:
  • Color depth setting
  • Desktop resolution
  • Screen refresh rate is too high
Try lowering the desktop resolution, color depth and refresh rate and then try again.Don't run resolution less than 640 x 480 since DVD titles' video resolution is higher than that.

PowerDVD does not support the current display mode. (DDraw Overlay mode is recommended)

Please lower the screen resolution and color depth, for example, 800x600 with 256 colors. Or you may adjust the refresh frequency, for example, to 75 Hz.

this is the error msg again, i this video driver already installed, coz i can ply VCD movie, only DVD cannot play sad.gif

I'm not sure whether this question has been asked here or not.
If I'm watching a dual language drama (RMVB file) using media player classic, how to switch it to only one language by not turning off one of the output channels? unsure.gif

Thanks in advance notworthy.gif

I use this one - AVS DVD Player.

Along with DVDs it plays H.264, 3gp, Quicktime, WMV-HD and others. Comes as freeware, no ads or spyware, and includes some interesting features like changing aspect ratio or bookmarking your favourite spots in a DVD. Has a nice audio processing feature which makes stereo files sound like 5.1 or 7.1 surround!

Quick grab AVS DVD Player at http://www.avsmedia.com/DVDPlayer/

Hi! Everyone,
Anybody tried the Korean player 'KM Player'. I have installed
it and now it's my default player. Tried all others but none
can compare to this KM Player. rclxm9.gif

You must register(free) to download. But there is another site,
no registeration. Go for the English version. For skin, go for 'WMP 11'.
Site for download : [url=http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Players/KMPlayer.shtml]
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=KMPlayer
Try it. This is th best player at the moment. rclxm9.gif

It must be related with codec pack or splitter. Try re-install your codec (or codec pack). If still same, download & install Haali Media Splitter. Get it from free-codecs.com

becoz the bitrate isnt given enough at fast moving scene, so it become blocky.

the pixelized scenes still there no matter what decoder u use rolleyes.gif
but decoder + deblocker(post processing) might solve the pixelized problem.

any mpeg4-asp decoder(xvid, libavcodec, divx) should be no problem to hadle this video, as long as ur computer is able to handle the power hungry post processing filter.

Is your friends laptop fast? biggrin.gif
the 2000kbps and 1440x810 really can slow things down if u are using wmp or whatever directshow-based player.

i suggest u try vlc nightly,
http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win32/?C=M;O=D
try branch build. (trunk build had wierd problem as the ugly black box will popup when vlc startup biggrin.gif )

Divx player is great too, if ur computer have ATI video card(9200 above?),
it can use ATI hardware accelerated post-procesing to enchance video quality.

Hmm, try the attached file.
put it into winamp components folder, and restart winamp.

The plugin is actually from the mess patch.

Newer version with unicode support :

I am having problem playing x264 mkv as i can not get it tp play on any of my media player smoothly. Once a while when there is a complicated scene the picture will freeze but only audio continues to play, then the picture will skip a few seconds and continue playing untill the next freeze. I have ffdshow and Haali Media Splitter install. i am not sure if its my hardware not fast enough, or its the setting in my media player or ffdshow. Below is my computer's specs:

P4 2.8 Prescott
DFI Lanparty UT 915
1 GB Corsair XMS RAM
Nvidia 6800GS PCI-E
Creative Audigy 2 ZS

So can anybody who can play x264 mkv files tell me what media player u use and what is the setting?

Added on March 10, 2007, 12:40 amOk after trying with Purevideo, Cyberlink.H264 and CoreAVC Decoder. Turns out that the CoreAVC Decoder handle this x264.mkv best with minimum lag. How ever the cpu load is close to 60%~80% most of th time, where the other 2 will be around 40%~60%.
I will stick to CoreAVC for the time being untill a better decoder is out.

i previously installed Storm Codec , version 7 i think, dl from baofeng.com, storm codec official site, previously using fine until yesterday... when i opened a video file, my AVG detected a threat in my MPC and force to clean it, then i reinstall storm codec and same things happen.

I so disappointed and i go back to baofeng.com to check any solving issue or not, unfortunately no. But they come out with their own player instead of MPC, named Storm II. I supports almost all codecs i think, and things solved, i can play my video files again.

Then i try to open those video files in WMP [which is default not supported ], strangely it can play divx files. i think the Storm II enhanced WMP as well...

But sad thing is, just Chinese character they support, so my player appear random codes...a bit ugly there, hope they come out with English version next time.smile.gif

the new version of stormcodec is stromII.. the previous version is 7.02.01 n the version before dat they put threat on them.. so try using the version 7.02.01 instead..

mplayer, a powerful audio/video player that can play almost any codecs and containers(thanks to ffmpeg, and various libs.)

homepage, http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html

binaries http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php (contains GUI version of mplayer)
and http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/ (contains various version that optimized for Generic, Pentium 4, Pentium M, Core2, Amd64 cpus.)

I've been recommended by my friend to try JetAudio because he said it provides similar if not better audio quality as Winamp with lesser memory usage.Anybody with experience can shed some light on this matter, i've never tried Jetaudio before and i'm a skeptic of other players beside Winamp. Thanks for the help, i'll be doing some comparing even though i'm not that good at picking up differences unless its pointed out. smile.gif

just install ffdshow.
flv got 2 versions, older format is sorenson h263 video codec(fourCC is FLV1, very popular due to video-streaming webby like youtube is using it),
and On2 vp6 video format(not so popular iirc, fourCC is FLV4, decodable by mpc without external codec).
install flv splitter if u wan play flv with other video player.

If you have quicktime alternative installed, WMP can play it quite happily
And for me, WMP is currently the best there combined Audio/Video player with good library and tagging system and also unlocked burning and ripping speed. Not to mention with javascripting and a little MSN coding you can integrate it in just about anything.

1. u r playing 1080p h264 with slow decoder(ffdshow for example.)
2. slow video renderer/player(quicktime).
3. ur video file is heavily fragmented on harddisk.
4. directshow filter messed up.

personally, I use foobar2000

QUOTE
Download foo_input_monkey and put it in the /components folder.

Open the cuesheet in Notepad and ensure that the FILE statement correctly references your APE file.

Drag the cuesheet into a foobar playlist - foobar should list all tracks on the album.

To convert, select all tracks and choose "Convert" > "Convert To..." from the context (right-click) menu.

coz u said codec pack lol=.=
yup klite contain alot of junk codecs which ffdshow already can handle it,
just install ffdshow, haali media splitter, and mpc should be enough.

strom codec is no different with other codec pack, some of the decoder hardly usefull at all coz thier video format isnt that popular compare to mpeg/avi/rmvb.
and where u dl strom codec? the one from here :http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Storm_Codec.htm got some seriously outdated codecs.
i often see forumers here always got problem when playing files, its due to codec pack.
stay away from codec pack if dont wan headache.

mp3? use winamp or fooobar.

Codec packs save a lot of headache in the first place.. Storm codec played almost every file i sent it..
Exception : windows(those with license etc) , quicktime and the specific mp3 aforementioned

Having to find a codec individually and check for updates is more of a hassle than downloading a ready made codec pack.. Probably the codec is outdated, even so many files still can be played by it..

Some formats may be unpopular but at least when u encounter it, you don't have to scour the web searching for the codecs u need smile.gif

I'm still ready for any alternative to storm codec . . .

codec pack is good if u r geeks and know how to troubleshoot the codec problem, or related crash, by simply disable ot update the specifc codecs.

some newbie user simply insall everyting from codec pack, and prolly later will scream for explorer.exe crashed, or the video doesnt play,
coz some codecs are really buggy, there are many combination issue will make ur audio/video unplayable.
for example, strom codecs included a terribly outdated ffdshow version, 20060526, now is 2008 already lol.
this old version got atleast 30 bug are easily trigger by user, and its slower compare with current version.

the best codec pack would be mplayer/ffmpeg, or codecpack/player that based them,
for example, ffdshow and media player classic home cinema.

btw, codec pack are useless if they dont include media player classic + ffdshow + haali media spliter lol.

reinstall/repair ur codec pack,
its because the video player cant find the default dshow decoder, so vfw decoder and colorspace converter is used, which may cause the video playback will become upsidedown.

Hi, good morning to all LYN members. I need some advice from u all regarding playback of movie files with .TS extension.

Currently i manage to use cyberlink powerdvd deluxe 7 version to play the file. But i encounter some problem, i can't control the time bar. Everytime i try to skip forward to other chapter of the movie, it just hang. only the player hang but not the computer.

Anyone using the same software encounter the same problem when playing .TS file?? (only .TS file will encounter this prob)

Anyone manage to solve the prob?

And besides cyberlink powerdvd, any other software that can playback .TS movies with hardware acceleration support?

Thanks a bundle 1st, really need u guys help...

haali media splitter + ffdshow, can handle TS file,
but depend on video codec inside the TS container, ffdshow still cant playabck interlaced VC-1/h264 iirc, and no hardware acceleration too.

how about Nero showtime? intervideo winDVD

thanks for ur reply smile.gif

the .TS file i have are able to be played with the haali media splitter + ffdshow u were talking about. but i try not to use that coz it consume my processing power up to 50%. Since i have an ati card with UVD, i was hoping to use a software that can utilize the hardware acceleration without adding burden to my processor.

I have tried cyberlink powerdvd, it manage to playback the .TS file but with 1 flaw, u can't control the timing of ur movie. everytime i try to fast forward the time, it hangs. Im still not sure it is bcoz of the incompatibility of the file with the player, but when the .TS is played with haali media splitter + ffdshow, controlling of the time wasn't an issue.

Maybe i will try out nero showtime or intervideo winDVD once i got the chance. Hope it will solve my prob. thanks alot for ur suggestion smile.gif

are u doing some other job while watching movie? sweat.gif

so what is the video codec inside the TS, and the video resolution? if its h264 then u are lucky,
the alpha version of media player classic home cinema version already have hardware acclerated h264 decoder, but currently its only work very strict conditions.

Nero 8 ultra edition/winDVD not cheap though, and nero dxva decoder need purchase seperately, winDVD im not sure doh.gif tongue.gif
try download a patch/update for ur powerDVD and see wheter it will solve the problem.

The codec enclosed in the .TS file is AVC (H264). And the file itself enclosed with 2 audio codec. One is AC3 & another is AC3+.
I have tried demux one of the audio codec out from the .TS file n tried. But it still hangs when either one of the audio codec is seperated out.
The only time it is working perfectly is when i seperated the video out (means without any audio in it).

So i conclude that the problem relates to the audio codec being used.

I have found that the 2 audio codec used is: English-(DDplus 5.1 1536K), (DD51 448K).

It does play smoothly if i dun forward the time, but hangs when i did (except when only video is playback without audio).

seriously, try media player classic home cinema wink.gif it might save alot of $$$ for buying other player.
since u said ffdshow works for u, that means the TS isnt interlaced,
the internal h264 dxva decoder is based on ffmpeg, which is same as ffdshow.

btw what tool u use to demux TS?

if u are refer to changing the color encoding to PAL/NTSC/SECAM, they are for analogue TV only, obviously they will not work if u are using monitor/lcd for PC. sweat.gif

if the video's color doesnt look right, they are may ways to adjust the color/brightness/contrast.
1. ffdshow (codecs)
2. video renderer (overlay mixer or vmr)
3. VGA (ati control panel)
4. ur monitor.

1. highly customizable audio converter? this is the only thing i cant find on winamp.
winamp has a good audio converter too, but not versatile as fb2k one.

2. fb2k has a low memory footprint, but depend on component installed, my fb2k now eating roughly 95mb of memory.

3. no eyes candy (no fancy skinning support iirc.)

4. lots of usefull DSPs/decoders. support many audio formats natively.

5. full ReplayGain support, iirc winamp only can read ReplayGain but cant scan and apply ReplayGain to audio file.

6. no video playback support.

the only downside is(for me), its will not play ur audio file if it has weird file extension.

Hi guys....
i've been using MPC (media player classic) for more than 4 years, I really love it....
But now, I'm wondering this MPC can increase the playing video speed to 1.1x......1.2x.....1.3x....or...1.5x with sound which can shorten during watch on any video format, can this MPC make it?......As I know, MPC can increase the speed to 2x, but......without sound and the speed is too fast..... can MPC make it play in 1.1x....1.2x with sound?....

or any players can make it and which is freeware?....thx....

well, that would depend on post-proccessing filter, video codecs and video renderer used during playback, combine with some special video player eg, wmp11, mpc or zoomplayer,

what do you mean what format? file extension?
audio: mp3, wav, ape, ogg, aac
video: avi, mpg, mov, mkv, rmvb

most mtvs are in avi or mpg.

I'm a Vista user.
Tips for rmvb files: Install KM Player and Real Alternative codec, next enjoy your videos. smile.gif

P/S: I'm a KMP fan! XD
The info&link shown in 1st page is KMP in Korean, but you can grab multi language version at other sites eg. softpedia.

JetAudio also can show/edit lyrics and album art nod.gif
But JetAudio consume more memory than Winamp, i think.. sad.gif

TS ,I think AIMP2 should be in the Audio Player list nod.gif
It has similar feel as JetAudio but it totally FREE. Been using it for a while now together with JetAudio biggrin.gif
What I like about AIMP2 is that it has 'tab' in its playlist; can have more than one playlist. COOL! thumbup.gif

AC3filter, Matrix Mixer or FFdshow should be able to do that, thought im not sure if they were included in klite.
For example from ffdshow audio filter, just change the "output speakers configurations" from default stereo to "quadro"

If just to watch, prefer WMP+k-lite. For additional fx, MPC HC wld do. MPC HC also included in late Klite pack.

A question here.

How do you guys save/embed an album art/cover into an mp3 file/tag? I’ve been trying with Winamp but it doesn’t seem to do the trick.

Or will iTunes do a better job at that?

Anyone used Mplayer?
It's like K-lite codec pack but without the codecs.
Just one executor file. (Portability -Which is why i choose it)

I have a big problem.
It can't play any video files with chinese characters as their filename.
But if i wanna play it, it has to be renamed into alphabetical.

Anyone can help?

Well, the codecs are invincible, they were static-linked when compiling, its inside the executable and its large.
(tons of them, eg the FFmpeg/libav*, faad, mp3lib and liba52) brows.gif
External Win32 codecs are not included http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

unlike k-lite, they are tons of directshow decoder and they are dynamic linked library (aka DLL)

the Mplayer is commanline-interface player, there is the GUI version but it prolly make no difference doh.gif
i can play the Japanese song with japanese charaters filename, but yeah it does not support eastern asian or unicode characters correctly,
its prolly affected by Windows locale settings,
there are some trick like changing the code page to Big5 or traditional chinese in batch file to make mplayer recognize the filename,
but im not sure since im not realy tested it,

Use MPC-HC + ffdshow + haali media splitter = guaranteed solved your problem sweat.gif

You got me thinkin'

I think i have a good set-up of
portability and functionality minus the bloated size.

I use Portable MPC HC
http://portableapps.com/node/15030

And to play Real formats such as the popular .rmvb, and some more uncommon formats that MPC can't play,
i download the codec packs from here
Yeah. It's from Mplayer's site.
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/

From all the list i picked

for real formats
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/c...0050115.tar.bz2

Windows essentials

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/c...al-20071007.zip

Go to D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\
delete all the files except mplayerc.exe and or mpciconlib.dll (icon files). This saves few mb's
Note: the files deleted are language files. I don't need them for an English only installation.

If you want to save more space, then you can delete the
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\Other
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\help.html

3. Download a codec pack that will play the file types that you have.
I used the "win essentials" codec pack, but you can use any codec that will play the file types that you have. If your K-Lite pack has the same files as I have listed in my previous post then just copy them over as in step 4 below.

4. Extract the codecs & copy them into the following directory.

D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\

Note: the codecs are going to where mplayerc.exe is so that the program can find & use the codecs. (all the .dll's should be in one folder only. )

You can do a search on the net for a program called "Universal Extractor" which allows you to extract files from programs without installing them. http://www.portablefreeware.com/?sc=124&p=2

If you want a smaller installation, then you can use appcompactor
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/appcompactor

to shrink the files.
However, only shrink the files & directories in \App & below. Do not shrink the launcher program (D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\MPC-HCPortable.exe) otherwise the program will not start.

From Mplayer to MPC HC. whistling.gif

Real alternative does not work with VLC because VLC does not use directshow at all,
Latest VLC already can play rmvb video, since FFmpeg already have the RV30/40 decoder for sometimes,
ffmpeg real audio (cook) status is unknown.

I see.

But for me.. It still can't play .rmvb files.

(Might be previous last update.)
And still.. I think VLC is a tad too bloated for my liking.

Hmm, i didnt test it, but you might have to use the nightly build, im not really sure.
it should be able to play rmvb, just some real audio format are not decodeable IIRC.
yes VLC filesize is large, and its not that good compare to Mplayer, mpc-hc and ffdshow.

Those who loyal with MPC or MPC-HC, u will be impressed with this SPlayer, it's derive frm MPC with built-in codec & optimized features, those who experienced lagging issue with MPC under Wins7 can give it a try, it is fixed with SPlayer

In Windows 7, you only need a splitter. Haali Media Splitter works well. You could also use DivX Labs MKV Splitter

Bleh, if i remember correctly, MPlayer(not mpc or kmplayer or anything else), does not need codec pack to play rmvb, everything is build-in,
lotsa audio and video codec support but less popular due to this player does not have a pretty Graphical User Interface...

Highly customizable player, can store plugin & setting in the install folder.  thumbup.gif

Can check this thread for customization: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/56316/

Hm, not sure if right thread.

But does anyone know why itunes 10:
when switch to Mini Player (ctrl+m) > Positioned to anywhere on screen > Maximise itunes >switch to Mini Player again > Position is at middle of screen and not at the position where I last put it at.

Is this an itunes10 bug or something? Like I wanna keep my itunes on the bottom right, but it keeps going back to the middle after maximising it from mini player :\

I downloaded alot of HD movies for my 24" LCD, but yet all movies look pixeled/blur where I do not see any sense of HD.

I'm using DVI cable to connect 9600GT to 24" LCD, using WMP + HC.

Movies format are MKV & AVI, size range between 2-7GBs.

What's the problem actually ?

Screenshot please? pixelated or blur on video is mostly caused by video re-compression, to reduce the download size. re-compression = reduce quality.
and how big is the video you downloaded? i hear ppl say lossless BD rip is about 8g something.

Actually I try to compare the movie displays in shopping complexes. The quality was so......good. I tried to play Youtube Avatar thriller 1080p and it looks great but yet the quality can't really compare with LCD/LED displayed with media player.

It's fair to compare computer LCD with LED LCD plasma bla bla bla ?

Well one from shopping complexes might be using the BD player, BD original datarate/mbps is 20mbps something, excluding audio datarate IIRC, which the quality is already near-transparent(close to lossless but not mathematically)
The 1080p video from youtube has much lower datarate, you dont want to streaming 20mbps video from youtune right? biggrin.gif
i dont think anyone here can even stream 1080p video from youtube without keep buffering, unless thier connection speed is higher than 8mbps.
PLUS, the online video streaming use Constant Bitrate, which is worst compare to BD from local playback are Variable Bitrate.

The rendered video quality depends on:
1. what video renderer the player are using, the best imho, MADvr, < use Lanzcos resampler, and bicubic, very tweakable.
2. what post-processing filter the video player was using, ffdshow(with avisynth filters combo = ftw) haz tons of it.

If you wanna tell us the splash player look sharper, no, sharper = more noise, plus you can see the strong "moire" artifacts appear on girl's cloth with pink stripes, resampling fail?

Gabest no longer active on mpc anymore, forked version is mpc-hc http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
Fresh compile http://www.xvidvideo.ru/media-player-class...cinema-x86-x64/ may be buggy though

Cause there is no VFW/VCM for wmv3, they are "incompatible" with each other because AVI/VFW does not support Variable frame rate, Variable Bitrate. hacks are required to make the video play/sync properly, which is super troublesome + buggy.

OR try this from microsoft first http://www.microsoft.com/en-sg/download/details.aspx?id=6191

this ancient framework already superseded by windows vista/7 "MFT" decoder.

However you can try if you have ffdshow, or any codec pack installed, just search for FFDSHOW on start menu > FFDSHOW > VFW configuration > go to "Decoder" tab > codec > search for WMV3 > change the decoder from "disabled" to "libavcodec" or "Wmv9".
click apply and try again on wmp or mpc-hc(recommended).

alternative method: http://mulder.brhack.net/#mplayer
if both cant play the video correctly, i suggest you give up sweat.gif

i did not see AIMP3 is listed. i have been using this audio player since 2006. i have tried other audio players such as winamp, foobar, etc, but i think AIMP3 suits me better. plus it can streaming radio all around the word. You all can download it here

For video player, i prefer to use splash pro player to watch movies and series, because of its motion2 technology, the video seemed smoother especially when the object in the video move from one side to another. I prefer this video player especially when watching HD video/movies. A lot of my friends when they came to my room, they said the movies look better on my pc. When i showed them a comparison between using this player and other video player, they agreed that using splash pro (with the right setting) make the video look better.

You all can download it here (trial/ paid version)

I know that many people will just use VLC to play some songs and not use a dedicated music player.I read from a reliable tech blog(forgot which one) that it can corrupt your mp3 file and reduce its quality somehow.not much difference but for the ones really care how the song sounds just use another music player.

I have problem with VLC. How to select 5.1ch output from laptop via toslink to Home Theatre?
What is the setting? 5.1 or A52 over S/PDIF? My Home Theatre detect both of the signals as 5.1 but the sound are different especially the voice at the centre speaker.

It's the best player I used before, far better then VLC and MPC.

Do you find 5K Player image blur compare to VLC? Here's the screen captured from them, please compare.
Do you know how to solve this blur issue on the 5K Player? Thank you!

ps: it's a MKV file, 1080p.
