Anyone used Mplayer?
It's like K-lite codec pack but without the codecs.
Just one executor file. (Portability -Which is why i choose it)

I have a big problem.
It can't play any video files with chinese characters as their filename.
But if i wanna play it, it has to be renamed into alphabetical.

Anyone can help?

Well, the codecs are invincible, they were static-linked when compiling, its inside the executable and its large.
(tons of them, eg the FFmpeg/libav*, faad, mp3lib and liba52) brows.gif
External Win32 codecs are not included http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

unlike k-lite, they are tons of directshow decoder and they are dynamic linked library (aka DLL)

the Mplayer is commanline-interface player, there is the GUI version but it prolly make no difference doh.gif
i can play the Japanese song with japanese charaters filename, but yeah it does not support eastern asian or unicode characters correctly,
its prolly affected by Windows locale settings,
there are some trick like changing the code page to Big5 or traditional chinese in batch file to make mplayer recognize the filename,
but im not sure since im not realy tested it,

Use MPC-HC + ffdshow + haali media splitter = guaranteed solved your problemĀ  sweat.gif

for portability, use MPC-HC with internal splitter

You got me thinkin'

I think i have a good set-up of
portability and functionality minus the bloated size.

I use Portable MPC HC
http://portableapps.com/node/15030

And to play Real formats such as the popular .rmvb, and some more uncommon formats that MPC can't play,
i download the codec packs from here
Yeah. It's from Mplayer's site.
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/

From all the list i picked

for real formats
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/c...0050115.tar.bz2

Windows essentials

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/c...al-20071007.zip

Go to D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\
delete all the files except mplayerc.exe and or mpciconlib.dll (icon files). This saves few mb's
Note: the files deleted are language files. I don't need them for an English only installation.

If you want to save more space, then you can delete the
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\Other
D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\help.html

3. Download a codec pack that will play the file types that you have.
I used the "win essentials" codec pack, but you can use any codec that will play the file types that you have. If your K-Lite pack has the same files as I have listed in my previous post then just copy them over as in step 4 below.

4. Extract the codecs & copy them into the following directory.

D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\App\MPC-HC\

Note: the codecs are going to where mplayerc.exe is so that the program can find & use the codecs. (all the .dll's should be in one folder only. )

You can do a search on the net for a program called "Universal Extractor" which allows you to extract files from programs without installing them. http://www.portablefreeware.com/?sc=124&p=2

If you want a smaller installation, then you can use appcompactor
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/appcompactor

to shrink the files.
However, only shrink the files & directories in \App & below. Do not shrink the launcher program (D:\portableapps\MPC-HCPortable\MPC-HCPortable.exe) otherwise the program will not start.

From Mplayer to MPC HC. whistling.gif

Real alternative does not work with VLC because VLC does not use directshow at all,
Latest VLC already can play rmvb video, since FFmpeg already have the RV30/40 decoder for sometimes,
ffmpeg real audio (cook) status is unknown.

I see.

But for me.. It still can't play .rmvb files.

(Might be previous last update.)
And still.. I think VLC is a tad too bloated for my liking.
