Any contrabass players? (assuming that contrabass is string instrument i am in the right thread rite?) I want to start playing contrabass and maybe if anyone can tell me what woods give nice tones and how much that big monster will cost it would be nice.

I think any string instrument in this family use mostly the same woods. So opinions from violin/viola/cello players would be appreciated. And also where to get advice/ buy these instruments?

Yerp. It's normal. The tune will change when tu turn it.

It's more like piano. The more loose it is the more deeper the sound is.

i think it also depends on the quality of the strings. I rememmber hearing somewhere, gut (sheeps gut normally) strings tend to be less elastic. Maybe that can be the problem why a little turning changes the pitch a lot. Dunno if it's true or not...

could be the construction of the violin itself. theyre not like guitar tuners which is very easy to tune. cheaper violins will have more problems.

i was referring to the tuning peg turning back after tryin to turn it. it might be loose as its only wood and the string tension can be pulling it back. some violins are very tight its scary to tune them

German? Wow, that is sure an expensive one. An electronic? I think it will be too rocky and loud. Better use the tradisional more polite abit sound.

dominant is one of the best brand.....one set of string would cost around rm120-200...but its more long lasting...there are two types..the normal and the soft string...soft string easier to break but more mellow sound...

my german violin i got it at good price..cause one of my teacher student got a new violin and didnt want it anymore..almost 4 years ago i brought it at 2500...which is preety good deal..i wanted an electronic cause church music with the electornic bass guitar and drums and easily drown the violin unless i play trio or duet...

use a microphone (a good condensor mic...i recommend any of the condensor AKGs) to pick up the sound. And stand far away from the drums and bass. You can also use piezo pick ups. However a mixture of piezo and mic i find is the best. Electronic instruments tend to have a different sound...somehow...

thats true, but u have to see how big the stage is. usually in churches, musicians are really close together. its easier for communication as there will be alot of free worship parts (i guess u can call it improv?). u'll also need to solve the feedback problem using a condenser live. with drums, basses, guitars, etc i am sure therell be alot of stage monitors and amps on stage

in my church, we dont use monitors...hahaha....everybody just hantam oni.

Anyway, the experiences i had with condensor mics; the only time i had feedback problems were with percussions...otherwise, there's nothing you can't solve with a compressor.

And i guess you don't have to stand at the other corner of the room. But maybe if the drums and bass are on one side, try to stand on the other side. Musician placement is also very important. Most gigs i see, all the musicians cincai stand wherever they want, some even in front of the monitors blocking the rest. Then start complaining " cant hear this cant hear that... too loud etc etc".

So back to kimmie. I suggest u mic the violin up and place yourself as far away from the drums. Also, in-ear monitoring is helpful. Of course that's a luxury that many people dont have. Maybe try splitting the musicians up into 2 groups. Electrically amplified and mic amplified. That way, you have reduced feedback problems. Or if you are the only one who needs micing up, then maybe try piezo clip on pick ups. They won't give the best sound, but it's always a compromise in church bands....somehow....

*EDIT* Somehow i'm using the word "somehow" too often....somehow.... whistling.gif

The size is like a HUGE comparisons, my dear. LOLx...
and they sound TOTALLY different.

The violin is like a baby kid, the viola is like a mother, the cello a.k.a violoncello is the father whilst the double bass a.k.a. contrabass is the grandfather... lolx.

btw...my friend is finding some higher-end quality string for his violin.....what brand should be the best?

if there's no tuner nut means you can't fine tune...would be harder to tune the violin using just the peg

No la, like have to listen about few times or if difficult, it will make me listen about 100 times to get the correct note.

For me, the best way and easier for your music education, take theory lesson, it helped me a lot. Especially the ear test.

Ear test is an exam thing.

Where the examiner will play some violin notes and you stand at the back and you tell the examiner the note. It's actually to test your listening skill.

i played the piano and the electone organ for 8 years. I'm interested to play the violin but i know nothing about them. I'm planning to learn it from books since most probably I couldn't hire a teacher anymore due to my studies. Currently i'm learning it from some various websites. Can someone recommend some books (or websites) for beginners? I can read score sheets though.

Another stupid question. My mum just bought a violin for my birthday and it's still brand new. As far as i know, you have to wipe the bowstrings with rosin first. Usually how long should i wipe it? I have tried wiping for sometime but still couldn't hear any actual sound.

I see. Well, Suzuki books will be good. You can find them almost all the music store.

For the first time, you have to wipe a lot of times. After that you try to bow it on the string, if doesn't come out the correct sound, wipe it until it comes. It usual wipe like until 30 minutes. Yes, you are 30 minutes, it is long for a new bow.

But remember, you have to wipe it everytime you play (after the new 30 minutes wipe). Wipe about 1 minute, don't wipe too little and don't wipe too much.

Good luck. icon_rolleyes.gif

abang brother, i dont go to music school anymore (but am constantly learning). not intending to be boastful, but i am performing and doing some session works part time. nothing big though.

IMH is something like ICOM too. they have programmes where u can even continue at local and overseas universities. my sister did from grade 1 to diploma to part of her degree before finishing her degree in australia with honours.

amacharu, my advice would be get a violin teacher. proper techniques is crucial for violin playing. its not really like guitar where u can just browse online and be able to play. also, u need a teacher to tell u alot of things beginners would not bother, like intonation which is very different from piano or organ where a slight move of ur finger will make the note sharp/flat

I really suggest you to hire a violinist teacher to teach you. Sometimes teachers is more knowledge then books.

Can i see your rosin type? Most type is different on how they use.

Yes, aiming for a Fender violin. I just have posted in the instrument price list thread. Go check it out. If I'm rich in sudden, I will get a Zeta Stardos of course. biggrin.gif For acoustic, I'll think I'll buy the same brand, Eurostring.

Why not practice holding violin first in the first lesson? blink.gif It is the most important thing to hold your violin in 100% tight.

Playing violin on your bed? Hehe, do you believe I play violin jumping here and jumping there? brows.gif

It's shoulder REST. Yes and no, depends how you hold your violin and your own chin and shoulder preferenece.

Oh yeah, on my violin, I took out my chin rest and only play it with shoulder rest soft-modified. Ah yes, I can post that someday too. tongue.gif

Btw, you got any good videos of any violin player?
*
Hehe. biggrin.gif Well, it's a rock band, make sure it didn't bump you're head. Try Ocean Avenue and Only One.

Those? It makes me sleep. Well, I don't have orchestra videos, but sometimes in watch it on TV at Astro, CCTV chinese channel. Those are the interesting ones. If like those pure classical like Canon in D, yes it's my taste, it won't make me sleep but it will make my head go musical insane. tongue.gif

Ummm...no. I know there is a forummer does. He shares his video on DC++ hub. Forgot his name. Unless Yellowcard live performance la.

Ocean Avenue is a song by Yellowcard la. blink.gif I only advise you to try listening to Ocean Avenue and Only One.

If I'm not mistaken, Vanessa Mae is doing it. Violin are getting popular that time when she play live or something, I forgot actually.

Flight of the BumbleBee, I can play that. But too fast, I can't handle it. sweat.gif I can't play perfectly, still practicing in my free times.

Where the examiner will play some violin notes and you stand at the back and you tell the examiner the note. It's actually to test your listening skill.

No.

Practice your brain to remember. sweat.gif Or else, don't memorize the notes' name, just memorize the fingerboard finger position.

1st of all u have to be comfortable to hold the violin and play with the bow without dropping them.if u can managed to hold the violin between ur neck without ur hands then pizzicato and acro will be easier...ok once that is settle.prac holding ur bow as per normal but with ur 2nd finger sticking out to pluck the strings.

unlike the guitar;the space to put ur fingers on the finger board is very limited.thus if u have long fingers;you might accidently touch the other strings and thus produce unclean sound..sad news for ladies:)

*
ic ic....im in grade 7 now..fees about 300..im taking class after work hours at 830pm friday.pls take note that before he takes in student u have to audition 1st.he just want to see if u got flair for it and wheter you can make it as a violinist.as for his experience of producing well good students ; his rates are very resonable compared even to his former students out there charging:P oh ya u can ask music shops around kl of pj they are sure to heard about him, andrew chye.

Halo~i'm NEW here. rclxms.gif

i found this site quite interesting..haha..1st time come to a site which is sooo local.. G-R-E-A-T!

i'm jz a beginner in violin, so i've a lot of questions to ask..

is there anyone know where i can get a violin 4/4 shoulder rest in kuching?
it is currently out of stock in IMH..and i found it difficult to hold the violin without one. my teacher said it's normal to feel "difficult" as for a beginner, but i jz can't keep it in the correct position without holding it. it tilts. as a result, my arm turn stiff and it's very painful. icon_question.gif
so..i think it's crucial for me to get one..hah.

oh ya,anyone hv idea on where to get a music stand too?thanks a lot! sweat.gif

tried other music schools besides imh? avantgarde maybe? stands are available at lee's music, les paul(saberkas) and the shop in kuching plaza. easiest and more choices is to get it at lee's music although the price will be abit higher.

seriously i am a very very lousy sight reader for any instrument but a good hearer. i play by hearing most of the time. guess wat i never fail my sight reading b4 hahahaha u know whats the trick? i identify the key of the piece in exam then i just follow some of the outline and play my own songs according to my heart without actually following those notes hahahah can say its actually mroe than 50% out of the notes, like i'm playing my own songs withut following, not sure the examiner notice it or he just accept it wink.gif lolz

Thanks for pm...i am in traditional church in kl.. Formerly in youthly church playing all the hill song etc...Unfortunately due to their enthusiasm; the drums and guitar usually overshadow the violins. Somehow I find it better to play a traditional violin for hymn...more woody and earthly tone. Lovely for the slow going numbers smile.gif I have yet played on an electronic violin. What is your recommendation? Btw; I am now looking for more advance violin for my examination. My teacher currently recommends me to go for the German made I saw few years ago; handcraft especially for me with my name. It will be going for rm10-15k

ahaha im a good sight reader but i dont count properly ekekeke that is my mistake...and because of all that modern christian music and the guitar tabs on the music sheet didnt help much in my former church.i had to listen out and play and thus became my skill which i would cherish....

10k-15k German hand made? nice! u will enjoy ur violin! So rich i also want lolzzzzzz..... but no money!!!

i got mine an antique violin value above RM6k for free ^^ its from my dad's frnd. He gave it to me as he knows i play violin and his family not. When we first recieved it i'm still like in Grade 2 or 3. Still very young not using full length violin yet. It looks old without polish and the string putus and out of tune. My dad's frnd and my family no one know it is such a valuable violin until i show it to my teacher lolz... God's blessing.

Hi guys,

Err, i don't actually play violin. But my friend is about to start lessons and is looking for a good beginner violin. I'm told that the cheapo one's are useless (just like kapok for guitars).

Could u guys recommend what kind of violin; brand or price range as well as location of music stores available within klang valley area?

Appreciate it, thanx. biggrin.gif

since he is a beginner; the cheapest violin are still the china made ones.they arent that bad compared to 4 years ago but do not compared to the german or italian made ones of course. there is one good store in city square, kl or else u could try harmony music shop in pj or the music shop in sungai way plaza.price range would cost from rm 500-1000+
if i was ur friend i would start off with the cheapest possible cause not everyone are good on violin.some just dont get it; its inborn ; rest is left to the age advantage to learn and determination.it is said that violin is the hardest instrument to be played in an ochestra so good luck nod.gif

Not shop, someone selling on the internet, full set 4/4 Sapphire quality, but from the picture, I don't like the quality or look, but that's from visual comment and my personal opinion.

Well, there're many type, the guy want cheap one, should be able to get from RM2XX-RM5XX, student violin.

Which shop do you recommended, I hardly see any with Violins on display, maybe 1 or 2 the most.

By the way, how does one test it when he's a beginner and just planning to take up the course?

you ought to get a teacher 1st before u get a violin; he may recommend u what to go for and u can look upclose on his/her violin(s) and get a good feel what u want to look for....or get a buddy who plays the violin to go with u.thats a better bet.

there are some diff type of shoulder rest one elastic type to tie it onto the violin wherelse the other one is adjustable and grips the violin.i prefer the gripping one as elastic will get loose after some time.there are many brands: kun, JohnSon etc. price range rm 30-100+ i think. some musicians dont even use shoulder rest; they use sponge or cloth instead; beats me why sweat.gif maybe not to scratch the violin

I just tried double bass few days back, the string is thicker than bass.

As I'm a violinist, haven't try cello but the double bass is really a big father. shakehead.gif

Hi,

Anybody know what's the usual price for a shoulder rest? I heard there's KUN brand, what about others? Are all these adjustable?

Anyway, what about chin rest, I see some people's chin rest are in the middle?

Thanks!

many mention that using shoulder rest is easier to get used to than non but prof would recommend not to use it as it robs the quality of the sound of the instrument

my guess u are newbie. I won't say it's ok but alright for a beginner as it's cheap. Most beginner would start off with china made violin so its easier for them to give up the hobby if they find it too hard to master the violin. the price quoted online is good but quality wise I am not so sure u need to see it in person to judge.. one china made violin which got good reviews from string magazine is Eastmen string. if u search for the past post in this forum. I've shared on this too and list of places u can find violin to purchase in Selangor

Uses the same system as guitars and bass.

Electric violin and viola uses the electric guitar amps while..
Electric cello and double bass uses the electric bass amp.

Anyway, nice to meet you all. smile.gif

take my advice go for diploma! learning never has a fullstop! grade 8 u can't be a real teacher but with diploma cert u can. This can be ur secondary "pass time job" in future. U can any time spend ur free time teaching in future even if u come out to be a lawyer a doctor etc... ^.^ Gratz on ur grade 8 wink.gif

Music is to be play with heart! =)

Hi there, it's never too old to pick up an instrument, all it takes is courage. smile.gif

Violin's harder imo. As they are fretless, you'ill probably spend most of time in your early lessons learning how to fret the notes, before actually playing a tune. That shouldn't put you off though... with passion and dedication, I'm sure you would be fiddling in no time. So, good luck! thumbup.gif

Not too sure about violin teachers or violinists for that matter. Sorry, can't help. sad.gif

Hi all, I just took my first violin lesson last week. Just bought a Samuel Eastman violin for RM700++ including a shoulder rest and fiber glass bow.
Its hard to hold the bow, my pinky and thumb doesn't bend into position. anyway, I still like this instruments.

Nowadays people prefer to be the soloist rather than be a supporting musician.

But the MPO program book shows that there are some Viola Concertos coming up tongue.gif

nope viola is mostly just accompaniment, with some part solo. not much unison with violin 2.

dominant has a nice warm touch....but there are diff version of this in the market..i like the soft version ; gives easier feedback.im now using Pirastro...most ppl says its better then dominant but i beg to differ..diff instrument responds differently... and this is a good link for violinist to check out on other brand of strings...

How can got DVD... MPO don't allow any form of recordings sweat.gif

But overall it was a great performance.. Can really feel the mellowness, sadness, melancholy.
That other songs that night was one of Glinka's energetic overture and Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony..

After the viola concerto was the 5th Symphony....

The songs list mood is from Energetic > Sad > Terrifying sweat.gif

dont worry, learn slowly. I started my violin without the silotape on it, my friends did, well i think its a good thing. anyway, hold the bow as told by ur teacher ^^ and the pitch of the note, just try to remember the point where the note is, when u play or practice more i think you'll get a hang of it. ^^ Gambate! we're all rooting for u.

other than correct postures and techniques, practising hard is the key to success!!
here's some violin teacher from youtube, if you cannot work with your teacher's method, you can try what they teach.

dont change if ur using a rm200 starter violin. =D when u get ur 2nd violin, then change a better string like dominant and get a better bridge. ^^ its really not worth changing strings so fast on ur first violin, unless ur first violin is a good one.

my viola's bridge is sinking =D the wood aint tat good and the string is sinking into it. lol, making the strings uneven on position. i think my G string is omost parallel to my C string >.< need to get a new one.

Infact, Andrew Chye is one of the top violinist in M'sia. He is also my sister's tutor... I bet he will know who's my sister when you ask him about her. Btw...Erm..Mind telling me who are his students who are playing under MPO??? Are you mixing up betweem MPO and NSO???

Guys...Mind listing down your favourite violinist or strings instrumentalist??? I will start 1st..2 of them.

1) Joshua Bell - He is one of the top violinist in the world but that doesn't make him my favourite violinist until I watched 'red violin' at the age of 8 (Lol...There are so many xxxx in red violin and I watched it at 8). He is just awesome and I wanted to see his performance for once but too bad didnt get a chance to ...Until this year some where in August...He came to MPO to perform... His movement, expression, posture is perfectly match with the song and everything he played explain why he is an American Grammy Award-winning violinist.

2) Midori Goto - SHe is a cute short small girl during her 20s . I get to listen to her album when I am searching for a piece in my pc syllabus. Bartok- Consist of 6 movement. And she is god-like...Her sound is clear, clean and so wonderful that makes me feel desperate after listening to it.

Noticed that Andrew Chye's has a student hold the 1st violinist position in MPYO. The student named Dennis Lau, Joanne Yeoh's cousin. He also learned violin from Nora Kim. Youtube got lot of his own upload videos.

Lol....I will ask this question because many people tend to look at those ultra famous teacher who got their students get into wad wad wad....thir students being wad wad and wad....But there are tutors who kept their profile low... So as long as you think your tutor is the best or a very very good tutor....then just post it here and how good they are...

okie...well...

Mr Teoh Thong Seng...Not much people know him because he kept his profile low... He didnt teach in KL anymore...IN fact... one of his student won the champion in the competition below 12 at the age of 9 and broke Malaysia's record as the youngest recital performer at the age of 12... I knew these so well because this student is my sister. Only after a while...this student went to Andrea Chai's class for some reasons. see??? There are many top teachers but not all of them are famous. so if you think your tutor is just super good....yopu can state down his name...his teaching method, his character...his passion...etc.
