XIAOMI hongmi (小米红米)

user posted image

Not all smartphone brands have had the opportunity to make it big on a global scale, but some have managed to make a name for themselves in local markets. Xiaomi, a Chinese company that has gained such kind of popularity, has removed the covers on their rumored “Red Rice” phone. And the features are impressive and, should I say, colorful.

user posted image
The multimedia capabilities of the Hongmi are also noteworthy. An 8 MP Samsung camera is located at the back with a 28 mm wide angle lens and is capable of recording 1080p videos. On the front is a 1.3 MP camera that can record 720p videos. The Hongmi also boasts of an audio system that comes from Dirac, the same Swedish manufacturer that provides audio systems for luxury cars.

On the software side, Hongmi is running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It does have a unique twist, as it has opted to put the MIUI Launcher on top. It also has two SIM card slots, allowing users to use two TD-SCDMA or GSM cards at the same time on standby.

user posted image
The Hongmi comes in three colors: ivory, metallic gray, and Chinese red. The back covers, however, are changeable, with the additional colorful options of blue, green, and yellow. For all these features, you’d expect to pay an arm and a leg to get one. You can safely keep your limbs, as the Red Rice smartphone only costs RMB 799, which is roughly $130. Unfortunately, there is no word if this will ever be available in international markets.

Specs:

MTK 6589T Quad-core 1,5GHz CPU
1GB RAM + 4GB ROM
4.7" IPS retina screen, 312PPI
Resolution:1280*720
Samsung/OV camera, 8 MPx back camera, 1.3 MPx front camera, supports 1080p video recording
Dual cards dual standby (TD-SCDMA+GSM)
GPS/OTG/WIFI Direct/MI Sound/Gyroscope/Electronic Compass/Dual mic/Bluetooth 4.0
Running MIUI V5
got a score of 14310 at ANTUTU

Updated version:
WCDMA version is released now

another one sale rm630, but never had any feedback through whole his thread.

Because they all buy from resaler. Main cause is xiaomi, they purposely doing it. Jack up the price. They didn't have much stock because material cost is around $85 and is making losses when sale at $130(haven't include shipping fee, handling fee, etc). It is their intention to create keep market demand increase. Even the ppl from China cant get it. Dont get me wrong, i also want the phone, but they increase the price so much and the cheapest from resaler is rmb1000

i think it's quite reasonable for only rm630, considering the import tax and the warranty covered by the seller, if anyone wonder who/where is selling, here u go

Well one thing I hate the most, I don't know if it's only me but I already tried 3 browsers, all failed.
I can't upload picture either to Mudah or this forum. On chrome it said "Unable to complete previous operation due to low memory". Even though I always clear memory before browse online. On UC browser and native browser, it just refresh tab and the other opened new tab.

Battery management is I respect the most on MIUI. wink.gif

this is my first mtk device, i tend not to judge a device based on benchmarks core alone. but this device performance has not disappoint me so far. build quality is not bad, doesnt look cheap. its lighter than my previous phone, all-alumium M7. and being able to have expanded memory is great. removable battery is also an added advantage (i bought an extra battery). battery life so far seems better than my old M7.

after installing all my apps, im left with 600mb of system storage. i dont have any large apps/game installed - clash of clans, pvz2, etc.. thats my only gripe.

if you cant live with 4gb internal memory, this phone is not for you. you can try lenovo p780, but its heavier.
and im also not using miui launcher, i dont like it so im using 3rd party launcher.

i heard rumours about the successor to hongmi, a 5.5" 1080p hongmi 2 soon. i hope the storage will at least be 8gb.

bought a xiaomi mi3 at shenzhen today. RMB 1000. checked with xiaomi website is original set. checked out both hongmi & xiaomi.. asked for 1 to 1 set of xiaomi mi3 and the girl showed me the mi3 i bought. At first tot is copy set, but the graphics & ui all very smooth, unlike the hongmi..

Hongmi only selling RMB 450. diff so much.

checked firmware it says WCDMA set.. but box give me TD-SCDMA set.. she say can use in malaysia (WCMDA)... fingers crossed hope go back can use.. otherwise, will keep this as my china phone.. Accidentally bought a China Mobile (中国移动) sim card... didn't realized that CM is TD-SCDMA network.. haih.

Bro, no mistype on the price. Open price RMB 1100, nego down to RMB 1000. Wasnt expecting ori phone cos of the price, bought cos its really top grade manufacturing & the software is smooth as butter. Went bk hotel check xiaomi website with the imei & s/n it says it is valid. Next test is if it works with Malaysia telco.

The phone can get easily la. My vendor brought me to 4 shops in huaqiang rd & 1 in guangzhou. Price range from highest RMB 1500 to RMB 1000..

Anyone wants i can bring another 3 to 4 sets back first week of jan.

Wah, RMB1000 ready very much below the RRP... How much you will sell if you bring back to Malaysia? Even I'm skeptical about the selling price at RMB1000, but it's so cheap, very tempted.. tongue.gif

The price is even lower than listed on xiaomi official site. Are you referring to RM or RMB? If is rm1k then it should be correct since the tegra 4 version is price at 1999 rmb from what I know

I'm testing the phone today. Reach back home at 4.30am instead of 2am... air asia delay, check delay, taxi delay.. all delay..

Bought a umobile sim card to test from speedmart. morning apply to activate but until now still not activated. Cannot test 3G yet.

I have a feeling this is tegra version, hence its TD-SCDMA version. For WCDMA version, have to specifically ask for 中国联通 version. I've asked the shop girl to look for that version for me.

which one is better between Xiaomi Hongmi @RM750 and Jiayu G3T @rm580? The spec is more/less the same. Hongmi with bigger screen size and G3T with bigger battery.

I have not use Jiayu G3...however for Xiaomi Hongmi, it is worth every penny spent...very satisfying experience, and frequent updates on the MIUI rom means we're staying updated all the time smile.gif Community support very strong also.

Since both have almost identical spec, I believe the the performance of Jiayu G3T is not much different with your Hongmi. Got an offer for Jiayu G3T @RM580, while the cheapest Xiaomi Hongmi I can find is @RM750.

hongmi battery is quite good. 2000mA is normal for a 720p smartphone, especially 4.7" (think nexus 4). however, im sure you get better battery life with mi2s due to smaller screen. by the way u got a good offer there for mi2s, i would definitely buy it.

If more than one year shud be ok already. Even if it is broken, for the price it worth already. Even rm2k galaxy s3 got broken after one year..happened to few of my fren. So for this rm600-700 fon, if broken after one year n there's nowhere to fix, can j ust throw it away and buy a newer model which is probably around the same price tag as well.

Just my 2cent.

Xiaomi Hongmi (Red Rice) replicas rapid identification guide

Fake & Original
*
Shocking ... after a week of use, found mine to be fake. Bought from aliexpress, I was too fast to complete the transaction ... now unlikely can get refund for it. cry.gif

My thought was that since its a MTK phone and already low cost, there shouldn't be clones ... to my surprise, the details and the extend it goes to clone it.

My experience:
1. Was expecting it to be speedier (ignored)
2. Some apps crashes (thought maybe it just need an update)
3. Slow locking of GPS (maybe its ROM issue)
4. ....

Then, found I cannot update with the official ROM .... started to be suspicious. Googled and only little information online as it is still new and clones are also quite fresh. Use CPUZ and found that screen resolution is lower and the CPU is MTK6572 (dual core). You cannot easily tell from the outside, the ultimate test is using CPUZ and also general feel of the speed and by installing some more CPU demanding apps. The "about phone" also give the wrong information ... says quad core 1.5GHz.

The box even have the scratch sticker that has a valid code ... (the only clue is that the code has been checked over 1800 times online). The IMEI and the serials are also valid according to official site. They even clone the IMEI and serials!!!

Haha. Yea. Its definitely copy. Checked with cpu/ram identifer. Says cpu is mediatek mt6577 dual core. Even the flash memory is faked. Actual 4gb only. Lol. Anyway, the shop didnt cheat me la, upfront tell is a copy di. Its just that they made it so close to the real phone. I tried the real phone in xiaomi store.

QUOTE(joshting @ Dec 25 2013, 03:53 PM)

Bro, good luck in geeting refund.. Did the seller mention its a clone phone? If not then is cheating case hence u got a case to fight them.

The title of the post says Original Xiaomi Hongmi and throughout the communication, it is obvious we are talking about the real thing. So, yes ... it is cheating. The fact that the price is close to matching the real phone is already a cheat, it is only a little bit cheaper.

So, buyers beware. Sellers too when you source from China.

The only way to really be sure is to test it on the spot ... Install CPUz and check for the screen resolution and the CPU ... Most importantly is the CPU because cheaper CPU ensures that the manufacturers have reasonable profit.

Don't trust built in system information because that can be manipulated

Yup. Not Monkey D. Luffy though tongue.gif
It's a powerful device. True Octa-core 1.7Ghz. 2GB RAM. 32GB ROM. 5" FULL-HD. Dual-sim.
And the good news is, the price is JUST $310.

Well China phone ain't for those 1st timer as you will always get the impressions that you mentioned. For me I will lean against those much well known brand such as xiaomi, huawe, zte. Other brand like those small chili even selling cheaper with slight better specs also I will neglect to purchase

not trying to spoil your day... but at that price, could it be fake? have you verified the authenticity?

if you go a few pages back, there's a forummer who talked about his purchase of a fake Hongmi

appreciate it if you can enlighten us. cheers

Bought Xiaomi Hongmi for my sister that came with Unicom Rom version together with their bloatwares. Now already wiped the bloatware out and return to stock JHBCNAL5.0.

Since the OTA update is quite often, does the root access will be lost if the Rom is updated through stock OTA updater?

Root access is needed because Link2SD has to be set since probably ~2GB internal storage is not enough for apps installation.

Edit: already found the answer in earlier post.

This is because there not much rival in its price range, which is why hongmi is selling like hotcake. Even though honor 3c has similar spec and coolpad halo has even more op spec (octa core at below 1k yuan), both phone only has td-scdma which is limited to China mobile users only

2gb phone with reasonable price which could find easily in local is huawei g700, which definitely at a slight higher price range compare to rm600+ range. If purchase online, there should be quite some model available with octa core 2gb ram at price range of 250+ usd to 300 usd range.

Difference shouldn't be noticeable since both also using arm A7. Moto g should provide you with latest android version, but without expansion card slot, where hongmi is generally cheaper by default before hike up with expansion card slot, but still at 4.2 jelly bean

Try to display contacts form SIM in your contacts, then you can identify which storage it is in.

True, as the case with Samsung but Moto G and Xiaomi aren't badly optimised.

Yes, but are the updates significant? Do the updates just tweak icons to make them look better? Fix bugs which almost never occur?

I doubt that Hongmi will get updated to KitKat. I read somewhere that MIUI phones are generally slow to update to the most recent versions of android due to MIUI's complexity. Its easier to update lightly skinned ROMs.

IMO, for future proofing, getting KitKat is important for phones with just 1GB ram.

Miui has weekly updates which addresses users input and fixes bugs, it is even more up to date than Kitkat, which is why some users prefer Miui over Kitkat. It is also very fast if you read the reviews compared to other manufacturers using different roms, Miui is much faster and no lag even with 1GB ram.

This phone is totally useless to me as it has only 4GB memory space and probably only 2GB left to user. And it doesn't even has a ext sdcard. Best just use as a phone only and not even for media purposes

can the sdcard be assigned as the main memory?

Just found that there is a way to assign the sdcard as main memory to solve the memory issue :-

http://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/replace...-sd-card.22100/

Those who have this phone can try and post your feedback?

why it shows Maxis is bcoz whenever you are in the area where there is no Umobile coverage, they have an agreement with Maxis for their subscriber to roam into Maxis Network.

on why you can't use your Umobile data, I don't have an answer for that. But I do remember one user in the Alcatel One touch Idol X thread having the same problem (Umobile, dual Sim, cant use data). maybe you can get a answer from there.

thats meant for data usage when you are roaming (oversea), and wanna use data, which will incur charges, since you are not on home network.
when you roam, the icon will show R instead of the normal G/E/H/H+

also note that the dual sim in Redmi, only 1 slot is data capable, the other slot is purely for voice/sms.

thats meant for data usage when you are roaming (oversea), and wanna use data, which will incur charges, since you are not on home network.

also note that the dual sim in Redmi, only 1 slot is data capable, the other slot is purely for voice/sms.

in case for umobile, u will have to enable data roaming if want to use data if no umobile coverage.
it will roam to maxis but no extra charges, coz umobile partnered with maxis for 3G tower.

Well, for Xiaomi company, you would expect less user complaining about their device usability rather than people complaining lack of stock available for purchase. sweat.gif

Which is why we could now see major brand like huawei creating a new brand just to counter xiaomi in the sub 1k and 2k yuan sector since xiaomi can't provide enough stock for the market

you should be able to find the backup and reset function in your phone setting ma, which you could reset to default factory settings.

Of course go back to what released by the factory. Those pre-install apps out of box will remain, and those installed by you will be gone. All phone data i.e google account will be gone too. You will need to re-sign-in.

Try to check it again. Text prediction. You must have missed some setting there. Try to check for other keyboard that is available in the option. Disable for all keyboard.

Was deciding between this and moto G, end up getting the moto G because of the superior speed and more on board memory. Also the screen of the Hongmi when turned off is grey colour instead if black, makes it look cheap. Most online resellers selling them way too high at rm600-650 makes it too close to other better performers like Huawei G700, moto G, lenovo s650, s930,p780.

The Mi2S going for rm899 is also more attractive for users who want compact phones but 4.3in too small for me.

been using this phone for 3 days... overall is good and with 2 SIM turn on the battery life still serve me better than my old iphone5 single sim.

The only drawback is lag of RAM, if it has 2G then it would be perfect !

so it all depends on what you want.

Moto G isn't as bad as everyone says, I used it for a few days and looks acceptable if there is some light source. However indoor and low light it doesn't fare well.

then send back for warranty, they give new set for replace because
no imei not same before.

but the replace phone had rom MIUI sjrom.cn..
i believe it was root ready..

now new phone i cant delete all data through wipe data@factory reset, my sms and contact still there..

same, JHBCNBA23.0

Before I hand over my cash, I tested the whole device kao kao... flash works, camera works, no issues with both U mobile and digi... so I can say this rom is stable. Battery level is good too, after woke up and only less than 5% battery has been consumed.

only at satugadgetdotcom. 300TP for Rm1. I got around 110k TP now, around RM370. Add 150 can buy Hongmi already.
That's why i am considering to buy hongmi first. Bcoz later when Xiaomi official launch in Malaysia, wont buy from Satugadget any more. therefore cannot you Treatpoints to buy cheaper phone (if redeem from maybank all RRP price very expensive one)

Note: If redeem at maybank, 250TP = RM1. Satugadget is making profit by earning 50TP more for RM1.
