Hello all,

I'm not sure where/how should I start research from - on opening a bidding site. Especially in terms of web and payment.

Anyone care to share?

I suggest you just use ebay. My main reason is ebay gets a tremendous amount of traffic. On the other hand, your site is not well known yet. Hence, you get more customers on ebay.

There are also trust issues, etc and costly fees to instill that trust, (few thousand ringgit if I remember currectly) to get an EV SSL certificate.

On ebay, it is free.

Ebay is good enough if you are planning to sell off some Items which you might dispose it but still like to gain back some value.

What I meant bidding site is like those SMS Bidding Business or quite recently an online version.

In terms of startup cost that associate with web, how much do you think? More than RM5000?

I don't think it's cost more then RM1,500 if you can build yourself, this all with hosting, domain name and script.

Sample script :-

Hi, I'm a student who's doing a bit of a freelance job.
I want to know the procedures of dealing with a client.

1. How much should I charge for a flash website? (per page)
2. How to choose a webhost/which is the best webhost provider?
3. Should I prepare a B&W agreement between me and the client to ensure that I do/submit my job and they pay me accordingly?
4.How long does it usually take do design a flash website with a minimum of 6 pages?
5. What else should I know?

Thank you. =)

Oh and is this a good webhost for a flash website? http://www.cubiex.com/shared-features.html
I''m thinking of the M-Cube package.

This is a nice thread but it's so long I couldn't read all lol. There's always the problem for me of how to charge my clients that look for me personally to work on projects. I always have to ponder some time to give my price.

Then some people that are close to me tell me that I charge too cheap. I want to know, are people actually willing to pay not a cheap price for someone young and without any qualifications?

Honestly, I checked your site and your rates are way too low.

For professional clients, they wouldn't mind to pay a slightly higher price since it is your portfolio that matters to them, not your qualifications.

Myself as a graphics designer, I had never disclosed any information regarding my paper qualifications and I am still young as well, currently a uni student but my rate is quite high since most of my clients are overseas (US, UK etc). Whenever I quote a smaller price, they wouldn't mind paying me more if 'the quality meets their standard'.

Uhm.. I started quite young as well, now I am studying at a university. I can tell you, qualifications matter for a few reasons:
1) clients trust you better obviously
2) you need to know basic design principles, not only do it by instinct. I remember when I thought my designs were great in the past. Now I look at them and think they are bad tongue.gif

@Chery
I think your rates are fine for now. It really doesnt matter what your rates are as long as you have the passion to do well in your designing for now. When you get into the real world (although you may already be exposed now), maybe somewhere at my stage (I am studying+designing casually for one of my lecturers), you will find out more about how to use your rates to attract the right clients. I have even rejected a number of clients because I am too busy with study. In summary, "it shouldnt be about the money".

I was talking to a friend the other day, he said he got someone else (instead of me) to do the website and he was satisfied with it, said pay RM 1k only everything done.

I was like shocking.gif some more was told it was a company with many staff, got it done in a month. He was satisfied. So OK la, fair enough.

I went home, check the site. I was like shakehead.gif the site was crappy by my standard, poor SEO. still using TABLE with WIDTH still set in it for layout. Overall design was awful. Friend satisfied, I don't know to tell him or not la cos he very happy liao.

That basically tells you the specific niche market requirements.

For RM1000, they get RM1000 WORTH of quality, i.e use of tables and bad SEO.

So its better to have different packages to cope with different costs each client is comfortable with. The cheaper it is, the less frills it has and the faster it gets done (low cost, fast develop = higher volume, better yield). Its still a business opportunity there, if you're willing to undertake.

ADD:

A good example is the fella who who spammed above me
( http://forum.lowyat.net/user/mbhoo )

He promoted his site at his siggie http://dissolution.coolpage.biz

For RM688 he can do a website design cheaply. But looking at his own site, it looks like 90s crap design, (with AD POPUPS!!!!)
Sure it can be done cheap, but with cheap results. He can have his own cheap clients to target smile.gif And if he cant earn enough, he can always make use of ad pops or maybe adsense rolleyes.gif

Hello,

Do you think going for Wordpress Template is recommended for a simple Company website? I would stress on the importance of SEO as the company name is hardly in the search result.

Wordpress itself was built to be SEO friendly. It's just how you activate it and extend it with plugins like All in one SEO pack, Google sitemaps etc. smile.gif

A company can start with a template, but they'll need someone later to customize the design so it better represents the brand and image of the company.

After the customization, would the owner/user able to do update as usual?

Mind to introduce any Wordpress Freelancer or Designer?

Since the client's site is Wordpress driven, its better for them to take charge of their own updates. However, this would mean the provider has to provide training and/or a manual on how to maintain the website content.

Client wins in saving cost and time by doing themselves except they've to learn. Designer/developer wins cause less work but less recurring revenue coz you don't get to charge stuff like "only can update 2 photos etc" to the client.

Malaysia has a growing community of Wordpress designer/developers. It all depends on your budget and who d'you feel comfortable working with. smile.gif

I'd advise by looking here: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1365687

Though I've to tell the TS to remove Simpleet's (my company) since advertising in LYN isn't the right market for us. LOL!

P.S.: Any WP designers/developers who are reading this. Please PM weirdguy and not post here. Keep this thread clean.

I've read this thread with some interest, and will be willing to assist with any requests.

I have been a full-time freelance web designer/developer for a few years now and my workload has been steadily increasing.

My portfolio is at: http://www.xrcmedia.com/portfolio/

I think I am now charging "proper" rates for my work, and I have the experience and expertise to take on larger development jobs. The stars aligned for me and it was never really too hard getting here, but reading this thread makes me realise that for others, it's proving to be a struggle.

So, to give back, I will try to answer questions anyone may have.

One piece of advice I will give anyone is to free yourself up from the shackles of Wordpress or any similar CMS. It's always good to have this as a skill for those times when you need it, but I've found the real value to be in knowing how to code a site in HTML/CSS from scratch. Knowing a development language like PHP/ASP is also necessary for the larger jobs. I've now written my own CMS for use on my own sites, and it works a lot better for me than Wordpress.
