a bit of both actually. while there are differences, you also need to weight in your own budget for it.

I know somebody who had splurged on a big brand name due to peer pressure, and 3 months later had to sell the bike cause of insufficient cash flow

for RM5k.. you do have a choice... it is just whether you can accept those brands...

for a fact, i know the Swiftcarbon Ultravox RS-1 is a tad over RM5k and the Ultravox Attack is around RM3.5k... practically an unknown brand and you might not trust it but bikeradar gave it's team issue a very good rating... i know because i was just helping a friend out with his bike and this was more or less the pricing for the frames alone....

the other choices would be titanium frames like van nicholas that comes in at around RM3k++ not inclusive of the fork i think....lynskey might be tight as i remember it's around RM6k...

if KH is willing to sell the Look 586... it might go for slightly above RM5k as well... i saw it was still there as a complete bike some half a year back for around 7k if i am not wrong...

the thing is not whether you should aim for a high end alloy or low to mid range carbon... but, are you brand conscious? if you are... then carbon is definitely out of the question...

you need to look at the most unlikely places to explore some of the lesser known brands like what sunnyckh says, boardman or neilpryde at velocipede (most likely expensive, burasl costs 13k and alize costs 9k) not sure how low can the lower models go...

the next one if you want to aim branded might be scott to see if their cr1 has anything that fits you budget... it's going to be tight and the budget you have might just barely or need some topping up to cover the frame only and you have to fork out more for finishing kit...

miao's suggestion of the SL2 at bikepro is not exactly going to be any newer anyways and that is most likely what you can get if you want a branded one...

pedalspot also still has a couple of super old frames like derosa king 3 and a couple of older model merida's... try negotiate a bit and see if they can let go of the king 3 at cost price (i think it retailed for 8k during it's heyday)... or some of those merida scultura that they have which are past year frames... they won't be selling those frames cos no one will be interested in them now... and if you don't mind old stuff... i'd say... go give it a try and see...

so, you do have some question you need to clear with yourself first... branded or you don't mind...then comes the carbon or alloy question....

undeniably... your money does go to the sponsorship money if they do sponsor anything at all... but then, if you think back... you are buying a certain something quite likely because of that bike is ridden by some successful rider who is sponsored partly by your money... so, it's a chicken and egg situation if you know what i mean...

bigger bike firms might also spend more money into r&d like spez who works with mclaren to do finite element analysis on bikes like their mclaren venge or one off mclaren tarmac sl4's.... the hope here is that this stuff get trickled down to cheaper models some time in the future when they think of some new shit to sell you a bike... and a good example for that is cervelo with their R5CA projects which is practically a stupid frame that costs 10k usd on launch and is limited... and they are frank that potential buyers are just funding the shit so some poor bloke another couple of years down the road gets to enjoy the bike that he is riding at a fraction of the cost... like the new RCA launched recently... less than 1 year from announcement and they have trickled some stuff down to the 2014 revision of their R5 models although not completely everything...

and what worst... to complicate things... we all know carbon production has gotten a bit cheaper than what it used to be... if your money ain't used to sponsor, market the bike, or make better advancements... that means the manufacturer is just getting fat on your money... is that a good thing??? or would one prefer to ignore it just because they can't see it....

stop it with those euro rules already...

bikes like cipolini rb1000 is like the craziest frame i'd never ever consider buying.... if i ever consider to buy that frame... i hereby authorize anyone to whack my head with a big hammer to wake me up...
