Don't do that , they won't last long without proper tank cycle and filtration. The Shrimp Thing, All About Shrimp - Neocaridina & Others

QUOTE(whitehawk @ Oct 31 2013, 06:35 PM) hi sifu arrow Q,i think all dead because didnt see them anymore my tank setup 45cmX30cmX20cm substrate ADA amazonia HOB filter DIY CO2 air stone flora - mini java fern, flame moss, java moss, HC, US and mini Fissiden, Crypto Albida 1 big stone (already test), lava rock, wood fauna - RCS X 15 (dead already), Neon Tetra X 6 i think the tank full cycled because almost 2 month already i didnt check for nitrate, nitrite and ammonia i hope all sifu can help me -how thick is your ADA soil ? -Did you add in any powder/liquid bacteria to aid in tank cycle? -and did you add in any new plant/moss few days or during the time you put in the shrimp? -Have you done few large water change prior on getting the shrimp? -Your shrimp swim/dash fast all over your tank before drop down and died? or they keep themselves under rock/plant all the time? -How high is your tank temperature? Few reasons why your shrimp died, -Tank not fully cycle, 2 mth may not be enough to fully cycle a ADA soil based tank esp without adding any bacteria additive or provide optimum environment to speed up bacteria colonization. -DIY co2 , if you run it for 24hrs, and have too much of it, shrimp may died of suffocation and also swing ph too low. Bacteria in filter will died off if ph go lower then 5.0. -New Plant or plant/moss still have fert/pesticide on them (never induce any new plant/moss into shrimp without testing it first with one shrimp in a bucket) unless you got it from your friend healthy shrimp tank. -Try use a long thin stick poke the soil to release air bubble if you haven't done that, this will help release trapped ammonia in the soil. -Adding fert that not shrimp safe or adding stuff that contain copper. -Anyone spray insecticide nearby your tank? like less than 10 feet away? -Never wash properly your hand (got shampoo/oil residue on your hand when handling your tank)? |

QUOTE(whitehawk @ Nov 1 2013, 02:05 AM) -how thick is your ADA soil ? i suggest you go get a standalone nitrite NO2 test kit(cost around rm20-30++) to test your tank, i suspect it still at stage 2 cycle(lot of NO2) which are highly poisonous. If none N02 is detected then your tank is at stage 3 where Nitrate(NO3) is building up and probably cycled, just need a large 70-80% water change to bring nitrate under control. However if NO2 is present then you need to do NO2 test every 3 days till it become zero, no live stock(esp shrimp should be added).my ADA soil 2cm thick -Did you add in any powder/liquid bacteria to aid in tank cycle? yes. i put 5 ADA element below the soil. Bacter 100, Clear super, Tourmaline BC, Penac P and Penac W -and did you add in any new plant/moss few days or during the time you put in the shrimp? Nope -Have you done few large water change prior on getting the shrimp? i do 50% water change two days before getting the shrimp -Your shrimp swim/dash fast all over your tank before drop down and died? or they keep themselves under rock/plant all the time? they keep themselves under rock/plant and sometimes swimming around -How high is your tank temperature? my range temperature between 26-29 i think my tank not fully cycled yet and ph too low Fish is more hardy then shrimp when dealing with tank cycle , some will survive the ordeal but with permanent injuries and their live span shorten. Some can't stand the cycle will jump out or died. |

QUOTE(ghoss @ Nov 5 2013, 12:27 AM) can put but make sure your plant/moss source is pestcides/fert/planaria free..hehe. to be safe , put new plant/moss in a small bowl/bucketput a shrimp inside to test like 30min, if no died then ok else discard those plant/moss. planaria hard to prevent as those hitchhiking is tiny and their eggs sticking on the plant/moss. This is the result of pesticides/fert leeched plant. ![]() This post has been edited by arrow: Nov 5 2013, 03:33 AM |

QUOTE(ghoss @ Nov 5 2013, 10:41 AM) Thanks for the advice , have to wait till I got more shrimp to test. Cant tell. Really. Very subjective. How long does it normally takes to breed ? But the following criteria need to have in order for any chance for them to breed. -must have both male and female shrimp(some shrimp like fire red only female be sold in lfs) try get a cherry male to mate. ** if you want to know why there is no male fire red for sell, answer is fire red male dont justify the price of a fire red. It look like a cherry with pale color. Majority of buyer(newbies) will complain and wont pay the fire red price for it. -minimum or stress less environment. Try minimize threat to them like mixing them with big fish. -have enough food but dont think smart and overfeed. Shrimp are natural scavenger. Moss will provide lot of surface area for them to scout for lodged food. Shrimplet will find comfort in them as well. -they able to stay alive long enough(a well cycled tank with stable parameter.) Dead body only breed germ. -easy shrimp like cherry, fire red, palmata will breed more readily with basic criteria meet. This post has been edited by arrow: Nov 6 2013, 01:06 AM |

QUOTE(tzuen @ Nov 6 2013, 11:51 AM) It's been a while since i got my Malaya shrimps from arrow. Their colors keep changing and amuse me alot, but particular to one of these that change into blueish color, while the rest still remain as brownish or even dark brown with golden stripe at the back. This is the second so blue Transparent blue malaya that i saw so far . Very Nice.Somehow it reminds me Blue Jelly shrimp but in gigantic size » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « Pls pardon the pic quality, wish to have better macro lens. |

QUOTE(bg2014 @ Nov 10 2013, 09:43 PM) Hi guys, These are Lava rock(same as valcano rock) , bad as filter media cos low surface value for bacteria to colonize, just wanna ask is it ok to put this into the filter of my cherry shrimp tank or inside the tank? It is some kind of volcano mineral stones, it's called 火山熔岩 in Chinese. we normally use it as soil base to increase soil height or as base to tie moss and plants. |

QUOTE(bg2014 @ Nov 11 2013, 06:35 AM) I see, sounds kinda useless. Lava rock majority of them are the ph neutral type but some do acidic and alkaline. Depend when it sourced from. So it's safe to use it in a shrimp tank right? Does it affect the water parameters? it kind of safe. If in doub test it with a ph tester. |

QUOTE(GTBlackIce @ Nov 12 2013, 05:35 PM) Using RO in my case. Usually fill it up on the UP Aqua 6L bucket and necessary amount of Prime for 6L... stir, cover it with saran wrap and wait for the next wc. The bucket is really useful IMO... it's quick to drain the water out, but takes me 2hrs+ to refill it back as I only turn the tap slightly. Nice... what shrimp is that? How you doing Sis? Still active here I see... Well here's a quickie on my shrimps feasting. QUOTE(bg2014 @ Nov 18 2013, 08:43 PM) Have anyone heard of Tourmaline? For reducing ph in shrimp tank. Can anyone provide any info about this thing? I can't find any info about it from google. ADA Tourmaline? if you want to reduce ph the safe and long lasting way, use plant or shrimp soil, if really Tourmaline can reduce ph! how many you need to dose and how long can it last?Unless you are into keeping CRS , no need to worry much about PH especially for neocaridina type shrimp like fire red etc, they only require stable ph of range ph5.5 -8.2.
