DUESSELDORF/FRANKFURT, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Germany's ThyssenKrupp said on Monday it had won an order from Singapore for two customised submarines to be built at its Marine Systems unit in the northern German city of Kiel.

An industry source said the contract was likely to be worth more than 1 billion euros ($1.36 billion).

ThyssenKrupp said Singapore Technologies Electronics, a unit of defence conglomerate Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd , would co-develop the submarines' tailor-made combat system with Atlas Elektronik GmbH, a joint venture of ThyssenKrupp and European aerospace group EADS.

ThyssenKrupp's Marine Systems business makes non-nuclear submarines and high-end naval vessels. The company said in its annual financial report published last week that it saw a number of promising naval shipbuilding projects around the world, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Earlier on Monday, the company confirmed a report that delivery of the first of four new ships ordered by the German Navy would be delayed due to problems with a flame-retardant coating. ($1 = 0.7345 euros) (Reporting by Tom Kaeckenhoff and Maria Sheahan; editing by Tom Pfeiffer)

ESSCOM Launches Ops Gasak

ESSCOM has launched Ops Gasak to neutralise potential informers working at island resorts around the famed diving haven of Sipadan. Ops Gasak is a special coordinated operation which involves various government agencies including the MAF.



Eight resort workers, including two with fake Malaysian identity cards, were arrested during an integrated operation led by the command at four resorts on three islands off the district of Semporna

ESSCOM DG Datuk Mohammad Mentek said the operation was carried out at resorts on Mabul, Pom Pom and Kapalai, and focused on checking workers whom authorities believe might be informers for armed groups planning to kidnap tourists.

He said a total of 167 workers, comprising 70 Malaysians and 97 foreigners, were screened during the six-hour operation that began at 0600H on December 1.

Nine were found with questionable documents – two Filipinos with fake identity cards, six with no work passes and one holding a false Malaysian identity card application receipt.



Action will be taken under the Immigration Act, while the National Registration Depart­ment and police will further investigate the identities and backgrounds of those detained.

“This is just the start of our operations under Ops Gasak to clean up island resorts of any illegals and our target is also to find any moles for the gunmen behind the kidnap and murder in Pom Pom,” Mohammad told



He said they were gathering intelligence and making the necessary risk assessments before continuing the operations at other resorts, lodges and homestays on various islands.

“It is important as we want to ensure tourists are safe,” he said, adding that many tourists were happy with the presence of uniformed security forces.

He said in the November 15 murder and kidnap of a Taiwanese couple at Pom Pom Island Resort, authorities suspect that inside information was given to the gunmen as they knew which villa to break into.

Mohammad advised all resort owners to vet their list of employees as they were liable under immigration laws for harbouring and employing illegals.

He also warned house owners that they could be charged for harbouring illegal immigrants if they rented out their houses to them.

Tal como o Pássaro de Ferro oportunamente noticiou, o porta-aviões espanhol Príncipe das Astúrias, desativado há quase um ano, efetuou o que seria previsivelmente a sua última viagem de Cadiz para Ferrol, para ser desmantelado.

Segundo notícia veiculada pelo site El Confidencial Digital, espanhol, o navio será agora vendido a Angola, num negócio que incluirá também quatro navios-patrulha, também retirados de serviço da Armada espanhola (Ízaro, Chilreu, Diana e Pizarro).
Ainda segundo a mesma publicação, os trabalhos de recuperação e adaptação, necessários para colocar o vaso de guerra novamente operacional, serão realizados nos estaleiros de Ferrol.

Apesar de vários países terem demonstrado interesse no porta-aviões, alegadamente seria Angola, o último a inquirir o Governo espanhol, a fechar o negócio. Os primeiros contactos terão ocorrido durante  o verão, e o interesse formalizado com a visita de uma delegação da Marinha angolana aos estaleiros de Ferrol, para verificação do estado do navio e facilidades dos estaleiros, que permitirão devolver ao porta-aviões o estatuto operacional.

O Príncipe das Astúrias foi por isso salvo in extremis, já que os trabalhos de desmantelamento estavam previstos começar no mês de dezembro de 2013.

À parte da visita da delegação angolana a Ferrol,  notícia ainda não foi confirmada por fontes oficiais.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems receives major submarine order from Singapore

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, a company of ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions, has signed a contract for the delivery of two submarines of HDW Class 218SG to Singapore.

HDW Class 218SG is a customised design from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The submarines, which will be fitted out with an air independent propulsion system, are going to be built at the Kiel premises of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Compared to the present ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems submarines, the new design has been customised to house additional equipment for present and future operational requirements. Special attention has also been paid to the ultra-modern layout of the tailor-made Combat System of these submarines. ST Electronics, being part of the ST Engineering group, will co-develop such Combat System with Atlas Elektronik GmbH.

Dr. Hans Christoph Atzpodien, Chairman of the Management Board of Business Area Industrial Solutions of ThyssenKrupp AG, underlines the importance of the order: “We very much look forward to continue the co-operation with the Republic of Singapore Navy which has already been a customer of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The new order is an affirmation of our high-end products and services and will further strengthen our position as a world market leader in the sector of non-nuclear submarines. The contract does not only safeguard jobs at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, but also several hundred jobs at subcontractors.”

It is reported that Indonesia already expressed interest in the vessel earlier this year. Following an official visit by TNI AL (Indonesian Navy) delegation to the El Ferrol naval base however, Indonesia decided not to purchase the aircraft carrier.
