QUOTE(hidden830726 @ Oct 14 2013, 01:49 AM) Mechanical watches are watches that operates using mechanical parts powered by its wind up process which can be either self-winding (automatic, which uses a rotating rotor driven by the movement of your hand as you're wearing it to wind up the watch) or manual winding (you have to manually wind up the watch usually by turning the crown). whereas quartz are operated by Quartz crystal powered by battery. You might wanna check this out. http://www.ernestjones.co.uk/webstore/stat...ch_movements.do The countries mentioned means are where the watch or movement is originally made in like Swiss watches are "SWISS MADE". All of them can make both mechanical and quartz watches or movements. For example, Japan = Seiko, Miyota Swiss = Rolex, Swatch, ETA Correct me if I'm wrong I do follow watchtime.com and ablogtowatch.com Hope this helps. QUOTE(hidden830726 @ Oct 14 2013, 01:37 AM) Sifu all, Mechanical watch as the name implies is mechanical. Power is stored in the form of a wound spring and it goes through a bunch of gears through the balance wheel which moves at a constant rate regulated by the escapement. What is the diff between automatic and mechanical? I assume its the same? If they mention Japan movement, is it = Quartz, Swiss movement = Mechanical? That power can be manually wound by hand (manual wind watches) or automatic which just means the mainspring is wound by a weighted rotor inside the watch which moves with our arm's motion when worn. Both Japan and Swiss companies makes quartz and mechanical pieces. "Swiss/Japan movement" on the dial generally means the movement is of that country's origin. "Swiss made" on the dial means that its either made in Swiss or a certain percentage of the watch's cost originates from Swiss. "Japan made" means that its either made in Japan or in a factory owned or supervised by Japanese. QUOTE(hidden830726 @ Oct 14 2013, 01:49 AM) Who can forget the watchsnob at askmen.com |

The question is do you think it's worth it? No doubt Zenith is a respectable brand and the El Primero movement legendary. But the two-tone casing doesn't work for me and for that kind of money, there are lots of other choices.
If you want to stick to Zenith may I suggest the Captain Winsor Chronograph. You'll get an annual calendar complication for about the same amount of money. http://www.prestigetime.com/item/Zenith/Ca...54~22.c708.html |

QUOTE On to the Bell & Ross: They are good-looking watches and I know many people like them. However, they do something that is almost inexcusable in the eyes of the Watch Snob. Bell & Ross is a prime example of a company that is selling nothing more than a cool-looking case and a dynamite marketing plan. Every single one of its watches use nothing more than a stock, off-the-shelf ETA automatic movement, the same movement you can buy yourself for around $300. Yet, the price of the average Bell & Ross hovers around $4,500. You tell me: Are you OK paying that much money knowing how much the movement costs and that it’s not even its own? Hell, even its $163,000 Tourbillon Phantom watch uses a movement bought from somebody else. Watches are as much a craft as they are an accessory, and while I don’t find the looks of the Bell & Ross line to be tacky like your father, I do find everything else about them to be distasteful and utterly offensive. A watch is about the entire package, not just its appearance. Any large watch company not making its own movement is not making a watch at all; they’re just playing dress-up. Read this on http://www.askmen.com/fashion/fashiontip_5...-bell-ross.html Is it true? |

the ETA argument has been softened by tudor again.
it also has converted some movement snobs to do an about turn on what matters more in a timepiece, though seeing some of them purchasing a tudor just screams hypocrisy. that said, just buy what u like...don't be like some ktards in this forum who can even ask what underwear they should buy... |

QUOTE(sniper on the roof @ Oct 15 2013, 01:18 PM) So... what matters more to you? I've got a wide range from swatch to omega...so I just buy what I feel like wearing for diff occasions / situations. And the Tudor thing.. not that it mattered but they do use top grade ETAs and they do modify them a little. the eta being modified...yes if taking a step backwards can be considered... why its done no one cept tudor knows...perhaps to make it more troublesome for regular guys to service, or to make it so that only tudor can service easily service it... |

Hi guys, I'm out to shop for a watch as a birthday present for my partner.
Been looking at ladies TAG aquaracer, it looks good enough for me but sadly it's a quartz and going for close to 5k. Aside from TAG, I went to look at Tudor as well, size is good but the bezel and bracelet puts me off. Oris has some good automatic watch like Oris Artelier going for 4k+. I then went and look at some Longines too, generally it looks okay an with automatic movement. I'm quite spilt between choice, I like how tha aquaracer looks but I prefer it to have automatic movement.. Which is the better choice? Longines? |

My wife don't wear one during the weekends and after working hours so its quite a chore to set the time again on monday mornings. Is she into dive watches? Sometimes what appeals to males is very different to what appeals to ladies. I think there's a Omega Constellation quartz model for ladies that's in the ballpark of your 5K budget.
