Hmm, the El Primero 36000vph 38mm for me. Not the Striking 10th.
I doubt anybody would argue against the El Primero movement.

Don't feel so bad.  Let me tell you something funny.  That feeling will only get worse as you spend more and more on watches.  We all know I like Panerai, and sometimes I'll go to a local Paneristi gathering.  I'll bring my small collection of PAM's and meet guys with 30 of them tossed into a single box like crayons.  You can't imagine the inferior feeling I get when I pull up in a Porsche, and these guys are in 458 Italia's.

You just gotta find your peace and enjoyment with whatever you've got and know that there's a whole world of people that can barely feed themselves and find shelter.

A watch forum will attract people who like watches, and there is no more important measure of a mans success than a watch (other than a sports car).  You can roll up in a t-shirt, shorts and sandals, but if you're wearing a Rose Gold Nautilus, people will know you mean business.

It's love-hate mang!

haha, like the way you put it.

i guess i hv just opened up the pandoras box of watch... biggrin.gif

i do agree with you on this... fakes aside... i think Panerai too has quite a fair bit of homages around laugh.gif

but then, with USD10k... i'll be seriously considering JLC MUTs and of course some PAMs!
Arghhhh... i'm still very interested in those newer base models like 510 and 512 icon_question.gif
*
Yeah, definitely a lot of PAM like watches, some so similar I can't imagine how they are not being sued for trademark or patent infringement.

QUOTE(ck77 @ Feb 7 2014, 02:35 PM)
USD10k ? I'll go for AP RO 15400  tongue.gif
*
QUOTE(kenji1903 @ Feb 7 2014, 02:43 PM)
can get new AP RO for that price? blink.gif

then i must have not done enough research, thanks for highlighting brows.gif
*
I think the AP RO 15400 is closer to USD 13.5-14.5k if you can find a good deal?
Unfortunately I cannot wear any watch with a bracelet - they just don't work well on me - strap only.

But yeah, a modern 41mm+ RO/ROO is my grail. drool.gif I would put up my left nut for sale on the black market in exchange for one if there were any takers. My other option is to sell a combination of three watches from my collection. Wtf!

How am I ever going to step up from that to a Nautilus, then if I can't even stomach the cost of an RO?! rclxub.gif

Even the original one in 1969 A386 also had the overlapping sub dials. I guess meat for some, poison for others.

The El Primero has no stop second function (non-hacking). A turn off for some people..

Having tried on both the 15450 and 15400, I have a feeling that the 15300 is the one for me. Unfortunately, I first need to a) find the moolah and b) find a pre-owned one for sale.

Unfortunately, cannot have a) without b) and vice-versa!

Can't go wrong with the 15300 at 39mm, it's just about right for most asian wrists. I still prefer 41-44mm watches even though as they get bigger they can look quite clownish. One of my PAM's is 47mm and I never really thought it was too big until I put it on recently and gave it a long hard stare. There's definitely a big dial fad going around, but a 44mm is enough to make a watch look like 50mm on my wrist, so I think that's where I will stop.

But yeah, finding a pre-owned one from a legit dealer and saving up the $$$ can be a long road. I think that's the beauty of finding landing a dream watch. I think it will be almost similar to purchasing my first expensive watch. I could not stop staring at it (PAM 250) for at least a month.

Original A386 on left, no legibility issue as opposed to the modern reissue on the right.

Rolex was definitely instrumental in the first prototype, and the first watches used a Cortebert ebauche that was enhanced by Rolex.  But I would not agree that they just took a Rolex pocket watch and "welded on some wire lugs."  The design of the production dial and case was all Panerai including the application of their patented, Radium based, phosphorescent paste and calling them Radiomir's.  Eventually, Panerai moved off Rolex altogether and went with an Angelus 8-day movement.

Interesting....

Luxury Insider Interview: Angelo Bonati for Panerai

Panerai has a uniquely Italian history. Why then does Panerai continue to make its watches in Switzerland? Is there a conflict?

No conflict at all! Let me answer in two ways: Firstly, just looking at our history, you will know that it is something very consistent with Panerai from its very beginning. When our founder Mr Panerai came up with the watch, he had a very demanding customer – the Italian military.

Although he designed the watch, he did not have all the components to make the entire watch. So he sourced for the best suppliers. Mr Panerai was the distributor for Rolex in Italy at the time so he approached Rolex for the watch movement. The dial came from a supplier in Venice, while they made the case themselves. Using many suppliers also helped keep it a military secret.

So Panerai has always been an Italian brand, designed in Italy but built with the best possible quality using the best suppliers in the world. This is still the case today. We demand the highest quality for our watches, and the best watchmaking technical knowledge is in Switzerland so we continue to make our watches there.

Our customers understand this and there is no confusion.

Well, I find his statement confusing...

Another article here that contradicts Mr. Bonati statement.

Finally, an interesting article on equipment made by Panerai for the Italian navy.

Sure the Italian Navy didn't specify the dial in their requirements to Mr.Panerai? Just curious.
