speaking of longines .... what happened to them now? they used to be one of the most sought after brand... but now it seems to be not the case
*
Unfortunately, it's pigeonholed by Swatch to compete in the mid-end.

Nevertheless its still popular in Taiwan and China, sort of like Tag Heuer's position in Malaysia for its segment. It's average joe perception is Longines=Omega.

QUOTE(Jason @ Feb 11 2014, 02:59 PM)
Still around under Swatch group. Lots of advertisement going on ma..got Aaron Kwok. But I see more Rolex in HK..and AP, IWC, JLC in China...
*
That's gonna come back to bite them... too asian focussed.

For HK, every Tom d*** and Harry also wear Rolex so its kinda the defacto watch there.

For China, Longines and Tissot very popular for their segment (obviously different with AP, IWC, JLC.

its funny how some ignore japan made products cos of the war crimes they did, but then go and support companies involved with nazis...
*
Yeah, I was reading up some forums and there's reaction of disgust etc when INJ pilot watches were brought up but its ohh ahhs when discussing blitz bomber watches and saboteur watches.

That is very true. Don't know why they do that. I don't feel excited with Longines that much and can't see the appeal. Not being snobbish, I feel Oris has an appeal, so does Tag..but Longines.. not sure how to view it.

Not really .. the conquest line along with the chronos are pretty popular with the mid-managers.

Perception is always different for different market.

Longines has a long interesting history as one of the oldest Swiss brands and maybe because of this, it seems their product line is all over the place without focus as I agree they do lack some oomphh.

It's panegines cos now we associate pillow case these days with the Radiomir

500 is hardly limited IMO. If you have enough money and you're fast, you can get it. Pateks, in the single digits.. that's limited.

The dial
*
I'm not the expert in old pre WW2 vintage watches.
This is the earliest example of 3 6 9 12 watch dial that is made circa 1937 IF the info given is correct. Perhaps a year or two before Panerai came out with their now classic Radiomor Panerai [Reference 3646] dial in 1940.

The 1943 Cartier Pasha till present also has a similar dial.
Anyway, I believe that there is a possibility that the design predates earlier than 1937.

As for sandwich dial, there's also the Longines Cal.13ZN chronograph from the 1930's that has a similar dial.. in concept anyway.

So I did some reading.. the Unitas 6497 is a $80 movement. Now looking at unlabeled Panerai homage.. looks..exactly..like..the..real..thing. Including an actual Swiss Unitas movement.

Well not exactly, Panerai modified it on the plates to look more like the old cortebert/rolex movement but yeah, there's fakes out there with similar look too.

btw, that pic is not true representation la.
i tried the rangeman few days ago...wears pretty similar to the mudman 9300.
and definitely more comfortable than the king...cos the king has a much longer lug to lug even tho its not obvious from head-on shots.
