Imagine that they are willing to offer RM50 to offset GST to retain you as a credit card customer, do you think they will be stingy of the annual fees which is only an internal generated cost?

a year ago, i held UOB One Classic then i applied UOB Vox card (got RM50 welcome bonus as well) due to i don't pump petrol. After i got the Vox Card then i terminated the One Card. They actually called me to offer RM50 so that i will retain that One Classic, my One Classic still had 1/2 year to anniversary month. I rejected the offer because i don't need so many cards, therefore now i only have the UOB Vox Card.

1 year before i terminated the UOB One Card, they had offered me RM50 to offset GST and 5 years annual fee waiver as retention offer. To be honest, i think i did not spend more than RM5k in a year.

Therefore the conclusion is the moment you say you want to terminate your card, they will offer you something. if they don't, wait for the card cancellation department to call you, they are very likely to offer you something.

i have mentioned numerous times here, don't believe the t&c that mentioned you need to spend 36k pa to waive the annual fees.  the moment you say you want to cancel the card, they will waive 5 years annual fees for you.

been there, done that!

I have called the UOB card centre today to cancel my card due to annual fee and GST, and the staff said somebody will contact me again to 'confirm' the termination. Finger cross

Please, if really want to cancel, the CS can do that. No need to wait for retention department to call you with to verify and perhaps a retention offer.

Most of the time, the bank need to put in the annual fee thing as requirement from BNM, especially foreign bank, they won't get good term like local bank. If you survey, most local bank offer Free For Life credit card in their credit card product list.

I not sure how could OCBC be the first foreign bank that allow to offer Free For Life in their TnC. Anyway, it depend on BNM and the bank, and remember this is BolehLand.

I thought the annual fee goes to Visa or Mastercard pocket since it likes a membership fee.

Bro, when did the above BNM guideline came into effect?

UOB has been offering FREE FOR LIFE for more than two decades with minimum X swipes, e.g. my UOB Plat used to need 12 swipes to get annual fee waived. However nowadays UOB keep changing their auto annual fee waiver policy, and at one stage we got to like swipe 60 times! Click here to read my article UOB - Why You Force Me To Beg You?

And for years too I only needed to swipe 12 times to get my HSBC Platinum credit card (they upgraded it to Visa Signature), but that policy is no longer stated in HSBC T&C. However, this year, initially I was told it is still applicable but they then charged me the annual fee, click here to read about it at my Facebook post in June..

And for years and up to date, if one has Citibank Gold Status, UOB Privilege Banking Status, HSBC Premier Banking Status and OCBC Premier Banking Status, they do get FREE FOR LIFE credit cards without needing to swipe even once.

I am not too surprised that UOB are asking third party to call customers for cancellation of credit card. That happens to Standchart too. Btw we as customers got nothing to lose. I can always apply for any other cc at any time if UOB got no interest to keep us as customer. Cheers!
