Thanks man, figured a minion pendrive would be more useful rather than jostling with dozens of people for a toy doh.gif

Btw nice peacock shot. Wish I had a larger aperture tele too brows.gif

Wah, what is that spider? LOL
Just read a scientific article saying that macro photographers can actually help with taxonomic work (describing new species of animals/insects) though their photos yo! Since these photographers will have a higher chance of seeing unique organisms through their photoshoots. Keep up the good work guys!  thumbup.gif
*
I have no idea what that spider is sweat.gif

About the discovering new species stuff, amongst the best in malaysia is Kurt, his blog you can find here

He's an expert on macro as well as identifying species of bugs and other small critters like lizards. Recently he discovered a new species of insect that was featured in a science article somewhere cool2.gif

Myself, I just like to find new insects to add to my existing collection, FRIM is a really nice place, would drag Silverfire back sometime again brows.gif

Great link there mate! Thanks for sharing  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
Actually I am working on DNA  technology which can be used to identify new species. The problem is I don't know which ones are new and which ones are "old"  sweat.gif
I hope to pick up macro-photography as well in the future. Looks really fun, much easier to find subjects, and benefits my research  laugh.gif

Nice shot by the way, I am really scared of worms  shakehead.gif

gunzerdude hey man, just curious, does that kind of softbox allow proper flash shots on people at night?  hmm.gif
*
A softbox focuses light, might not be a good idea to use it on people unless you bring it really close to them. Try a mini umbrella instead, since your focus is to make the light as soft as possible. A parabolic light-shaper will spread the light out as much as possible.

Here's an example of what that soft-box does

I already have an umbrella haha, just that its hard to use it when its only me  tongue.gif
*
Yeah, an umbrella is more difficult to handle than a softbox outdoors, with the wind and all doh.gif

But to be honest, your vacation shots using flash is pretty nice already. Even lighting and nice shadow-transitions. Good job mate icon_rolleyes.gif

Got, friggin lots of mosquitoes. sweat.gif

Dear Silverfire ignored part of my instructions to wear long sleeves and shoes with long socks.
So the fella paid the price with both his arms literally covered with mosquito bites at the end of the day doh.gif

The girl also had quite a few on her legs. Even I also got one under my shirt! Don't mess with jungle mosquitoes rclxub.gif

I went to FRIM once about last few months ago, but didn't discovered a lot of special insects there, most of them are just ordinary ants. If you guys going to FRIM again, can I join?(although I am a Canon user, doesn't matter right? tongue.gif) I love macro photography too.
*
Of course~ The more the merrier, especially given the state of security in Malaysia nowadays, not safe to wander into a forest alone with gear worth tens of thousands sweat.gif

Yeah yeah  nod.gif Shooting without flash in the forest is almost impossible, since almost all of the light is covered by the thick layers of leaves on top. Do you own a dedicated macro lens for macro shots?
*
silverfire managed to do it, high iso+flash/no flash. Some shots came out really nice too. Salute him, never really thought of balancing ambient with flash throughout the 1 year+ I've invested into macro doh.gif

And yes, I'm somewhat into macro more than other genres, went from 50mm+extension tubes > Tamron 90mm (stolen) > Tamron 60mm > Tamron 90mm VC
Also have extension tubes, teleconverter, even tried DIYing my own macro flash diffuser until I bought my own Nissin MF18 ringflash icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Aug 5 2013, 01:38 PM)
Haha, yeah, I've learnt my lesson too when I took photos inside the Rimba Ilmu of UM... the mosquitoes are crazy!
But at least no leeches right? haha tongue.gif
Wah, I would like to join too once I get a macro lens  laugh.gif
*
You can always get extension tubes, meike has a set that retains autofocus and aperture control for RM250, which is what I have atm. Cheap solution compared to a dedicated lens, gives great results too. thumbup.gif

P.S. If I do find a leech I'll probably try and take a macro shot of the mouth, I know it's weird but that's just me brows.gif

I also tried to balance my macro shots with ambient + flash, most of the time I just dial my exposure compensation to -1 EV or soemthing, then use the bounce card on my flash to fill the subjects, most of the time the result is quite good.
*
Yeah, I should start experimenting with that, previously I only use iso 100-200 exclusively because I want to retain details for smaller subjects. sweat.gif

I use ISO 400 even if it's in daylight, because my aperture is around f8-f13, it's hard for me to achieve 1/100 - 1/200 of shutter speed sometimes.
*
I'm usually working with number above that because of the teleconverter+extension tubes rclxub.gif

Then I just let the flash do the rest. laugh.gif

Which usually results in a black background unless it's adjacent to the subject.

Hmm... with teleconverter + extension tubes, at the same aperture, it will requires more light to come in to achieve the same exposure right?
yeah... but macro shots with totally dark background don't look that good imo, i prefer those who looks natural. Still can't figure out how to use tripod together with macro lenses, it will be really hard to carry around and adjust without scaring the insects away.
*
Well.... It depends on the shot really, some are better with a black background, some not so much.

user posted image

Yes, working with attachments reduces light, with a teleconverter I can see F/64 on my cam if I stop all the way down, go figure if extension tubes are thrown in laugh.gif

I use a monopod occasionally. Much much better than tripods unless it's a stationary subject like a spider within it's nest.

Thanks for sharing sifu  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
I am aiming for the 105mm micro already haha, will be useful for my research too, and at the same time can be used for portraits... killing many birds with one glass  rclxm9.gif
Gosh I'm super afraid of leeches T_______T
*
I guess the 105 would make a good portrait lens on a full frame body la, since you can get closer. The 90mm on my crop frame is only so-so because of the framing, have to be furthur back = less bokeh doh.gif

Keep in mind the aperture actually stops down as you get closer with macro lenses.

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Aug 5 2013, 06:53 PM)
Aiya, 36MP at 70mm is no match for 26MP at 300mm!  brows.gif  brows.gif

Yeah, it is often compared to the old-school 105mm F2 with defocus control, one of the best portrait lenses during its time lol...
I'm not sure how it will fare as a portrait lens since its F2.8 "only", but I'm 100% sure it is suitable for taking bug prawns  (n3n)
*
You all cheating to the max lah, D600 can go way above in ISO while D800 can retain details even when not magnified as close cry.gif

105 micro can hardly match up to a 105 DC mate, since the micro stops down when you get close, while 105 retains it's bigger aperture at the same distance. icon_idea.gif

The 1850 is quoted by digitalsmania, but have to wait for them to order la, usually takes them just a couple days to get the lens in their store.

I see, thanks for the info thumbup.gif  I wonder if it is worth the jump from 1900 (Tammy 90mm with VC) to 2990 (Micro Nikkor 105mm f2.8) simply for the better build quality. As regards the IQ, I think they both are pretty much the same right?
*
That comes down to your budget la, for me the VC=90% of the Nikkor except for the metal build quality so the 1000 bucks extra is better spent elsewhere brows.gif
