QUOTE(zheng88 @ Jul 19 2013, 11:40 PM) The environment and his lecturers should have been more proactive in picking up the warning signs. It shows the cold and insular environment that the institution has and perhaps he felt that there weren't people that cared for his problems especially depression. It is a shame that an institution that is so renoun should actually have people trained to mentor and supervise the wellbeing of students and see that people don't go over the cliff left unsupervised. Today we see a couple get convicted of crimes that show that our youth are suffering from delinquency and the defects of our society that is not paying attention to the emotional needs of people. We pay to much attention to the material aspects of life and not enough thought goes into wellbeing and balance state of mind and health. It is sad that we are becoming a mindless society only bent on prosecuting victims of a failed society. Wholeheartedly agree with the bolded statement In this guy's case, he is probably an introvert to begin with and introverts in general would have a hard time opening up and explaining their predicament to "strangers" such as the university counselor. His problem probably indirectly led to extremely poor self esteem as well as affecting his studies negatively but he is unable to share his problem with anyone who would understand him. Asian parents in general prioritizes studies and grades with neglecting to empathize with their children's mental and emotional problems thus opening up to his parents would not really aid much in any way.

QUOTE(dotadellpro @ Jul 20 2013, 12:05 AM) You also wanted benefit from him, and then complain when he doesn't want to share his hard work with you, you complain and then say he kiasu? Someone certainly have a sense of entitlement. Hey mate, that were only a few times I asked for his study material, if he doesn't want to give then so be it. I don't whine about not being able to get his precious cargo. The only complain I have for him is he fake and kiasu. If he doesn't want to give, just say, "Sorry, these are mine". I can understand it. We are close friends, at least don't lie to my face. Read: He's fake, I don't like it. Not I don't like him because he didn't share his precious cargo or I cannot get benefit from him. It was an example only. If you still don't understand, it means even if he's offering free beers to me whenever we go out, I would prefer not going out with him because he is fake.

Maybe in a class a teacher may teacher more than 50 people, the lecturer can't really pick up all the signs at once. Also, I saw one of my tutors can really pick up students signs by just looking on their faces. That's creepy lol.

Sorry if offended you, but I'm only judging from what you previously said. Well, I seen the same people. Overachievers tend to be kiasu, its what drive them to overachieve. My point of view is that they would rather push people down to be at top, instead of improving themselves to be at the top. I'm not saying their method is wrong, just that I don't like it.
