Official SSD Discussion Thread

Introduction
A solid-state drive (SSD) (sometimes improperly referred to as a "solid-state disk" or "electronic disk") is a data storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently. SSD technology uses electronic interfaces compatible with traditional block input/output (I/O) hard disk drives. SSDs do not employ any moving mechanical components, which distinguishes them from traditional magnetic disks such as hard disk drives (HDDs) or floppy disks, which are electromechanical devices containing spinning disks and movable read/write heads. Compared with electromechanical disks, SSDs are typically less susceptible to physical shock, are silent, and have lower access time and latency, but are, at 2011 market prices, more expensive per unit of storage. The prices have continued to decline in 2012.

SSDs share the I/O interface technology developed for hard disk drives, thus permitting simple replacement for most applications.
As of 2010, most SSDs use NAND-based flash memory, which retains data without power. For applications requiring fast access, but not necessarily data persistence after power loss, SSDs may be constructed from random-access memory (RAM). Such devices may employ separate power sources, such as batteries, to maintain data after power loss.

Hybrid drives combine the features of SSDs and HDDs in the same unit, containing a large hard disk drive and an SSD cache to improve performance of frequently accessed data. These devices may offer near-SSD performance for many applications.

hi all..i'm using Asrock Z77E itx mobo...
underside got 1 msata slot which is running 3gb/s
is there a major throttle down in speed if i put in a 6gb/s msata SSD?
tq in advance
*
There will be little throttle down in speed. mSata will only be good option to consider for a rig when your casing can't mount a ssd inside anymore.

I think I want to buy OCZ Vector 4 but not sure where to get it? Doesn't seem to be selling in lowyat shops and couldn't find lowyat topic selling it also..
*
Perhaps u mean vector or vertex 4 whistling.gif ?
Yea I didnt see either one of them in lowyat price list now. Instead, I saw a new line up of Vertex 450 from OCZ.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/vertex...iew,3517-7.html

I think garage sellers may still have stock for vertex4 hmm.gif .

Ya I got it wrong, heard vertex 4 has good reviews smile.gif is vector newer and faster than vertex 4?
*
QUOTE(iori57 @ Jul 9 2013, 01:29 PM)
I decided to get Samsung 840 Pro. It is fastest compare to rest and only OCZ Vector beats it.

However reading the reviews, Samsung seems to be all positive while OCZ Vector has quite a number of negative reviews that says that the harddisk is blazingly fast while it works... which is just 2-3 months before it fails and need to send for warranty.
*
In terms of release date from latest to oldest:
Vertex 450 > Vector > Vertex 4.
Hmm previously ocz is having lot of bad feedback at the production of older models. New models seem ok imo, but the easier way to check might just head to newegg website tongue.gif .
Samsung 840 pro is expensive at higher capacity ones.

QUOTE(1024kbps @ Jul 9 2013, 12:23 PM)
Yup, some SandForce based SSD require AHCI mode to update its firmware, and it is necessary as it will improve performance compare to IDE mode, because you will get newer native AHCI driver from INTEL/AMD instead of default driver from Microsoft which may only treat your SSD like a HDD.
Newer mobo is default to AHCI, older one are mostly IDE if i recall correctly,
*
Yup, indeed nod.gif .
AHCI vs IDE is obvious at the "Welcome" screen loading time, AHCI just skipped it and IDE mode will load like HDD.
From boot screen to the Window Logo screen just almost the same speed imo.
Tested Intel 520 at old mobo sata2 [no AHCI]
while corsair force 3 in z68 mobo with AHCI enabled.

okay so lets say I switched the Sata setting to AHCI, what would happen to the HDDs that are connected as storage? or the files in them for that matter?
*
Hmm not sure how the results will be, I didn't try those config on my HDD. If using AHCI mode on HDD, I think the speed will be improved a little for HDD as boot drive.

Anyone know where can we buy Samsung 840 SSD? macam only got one seller in garage sales selling but he in jakarta now...

Nice source added, recently a lot brands focusing on enterprise grade ssd. But the price is still expensive as they are new lineups.
Plextor also doing their new series of ssd since the computex 2013, not sure about those details yet. A matter of time plextor reveal them hmm.gif .
Samsung also move forward to a 19nm chip like toshiba did a week ago iinm hmm.gif . For the reasons of better speed, power consumption and bla3 tongue.gif .

Is A-DATA SSD SP900 128gb reliable?
Rarely come across this brand.

Anyone using this SSD?
Thanks!
*
Not so reliable imo, since i'm just look through newegg feedback.
Quite a few customers that stated it works good but the ssd dead/problematic like data loss after weeks/months of usage.
Besides it also has firmware problems that not sure fixed or not, some claims that can't update to the latest firmware though official website to solve trim command option in OS.
Lastly, customer service looks bad by most bad feedback.
Performance is still reasonable. Try dig some latest reviews if u really wanted this ssd before buying.
This brand is quite often seen in US/Europe i guess. Rarely seen any reseller of this brand in MY.

I become ever more hopeful that in 2-3 years time, the same RM600 that get us 256G now could land us a 1TB SSD. If they come in PCIe 3  wub.gif  rclxms.gif bye bye SATA  thumbup.gif
*
Hopefully it will be cool2.gif , then may eventually replace mechanical drives if at the similar price.
Saw a review at somewhere, pcie 2.0 can support up to 1gb+ per sec transfer speed. Not sure what will get from pcie 3.0 rclxub.gif .
