Which model is it? Most VoIP boxes don't connect to the phone network and therefore don't require SIRIM certification. Of the Sipura/Linksys ones, only the SPA-3000 series have such a connection.

Perhaps the customs people are mistaken and don't understand the technology as well as they think.

To answer my own question, with some googling I came up with www.irepublics.com. They charge RM0.10 for fixed line and RM0.16 for handphone termination within Malaysia. Not great rates but I tried the service and it seemed to work so far, so that's better than nothing. Will do a few more trials.

What's the latency like?

Edit - Now I remember why the name looks familiar. They offer free web hosting of 800MB.

Not bad at all. I used it to ring my fixed line, and listened on the phone while speaking into my computer headset. The delay was barely noticeable. Ping time to their SIP server via Streamyx is about 45ms.

That seems quite okay. Where is their server, by the way? If in Malaysia, then the latency would be very low. Any non-Malaysia VoIP provider with their server in Malaysia?

Yeah, they are in Malaysia. I'm not aware of any foreign providers with servers here. I think the market is probably too small and the cost of bandwidth too high.

I have also tested their service, calling to Australia fixed line, quality not bad, it was like talking locally. Rate also quite reasonable, 10 cents/minute. I think their charge 16 cents/minute for local handphone and 10 cents/minute for outstation is quite reasonable and even cheaper than smart call. Anyone manage to find price cheaper than irepublics? provided with good quality also... pls pm me.... thanks ya..

Perhaps your SIP clients are doing a reinvite which is causing problems with your NAT. Maybe you can disable reinvites?

I went to the SMS2talk web site.

When I click on "Products" and "SMS Call", I get an error message ("Sorry. An error encountered.").

When I click on "Rates", choose my calling-from, then choose my calling-to, I get an error message ("Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types.").

Basically it was not possible to get any useful information from the site.

If the company cannot even manage to put up a working web site (which is very easy to do) then I would not want to trust them with my telephone calls.

Well I have been using this service for the past 2 years and it works very well, their web site is on ASP so it might be a prob by that time, but the VOICE Servers are different and it have super voice quality.

If you are intrested I can offer you my account for 2 days as I have few accounts. please email me.

to see the rates you have to go to

1 Rates
2 Sip Rate
3 Sip Zone
4 Sip Zone Singapore
5 Click on the letter of the country you are calling to. (M for Malaysia)

Enjoy!!!

Hey, is there any plan for unlimited local call within Malaysia for a fixed rate? Similar to the mio voice in Singtel?
