Dear all,

This thread is a bit stale at the moment. biggrin.gif

I bought a Nokia 6120 Classic about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if any of you guys are using mobile voip with unlimited data plan and also what mobile voip client you use. I tried Truphone but it doesn't seem to work on my phone (as per the website). I am trying fring but I don't have anyone to call! smile.gif

Please feel free to give any feedback or comments or reviews that you have.

I've tried all these 3 VoIP services on my Nokia E61:

1) fring.com
The best SO FAR. Can call & chat Skype users all over the globe. Lag about 1 to 2 secs.

2) gizmoproject.com
The best for both landlines and mobiles within Malaysia for FREE. But the T&C very strict. Lag is less than 1 sec.

3) truphone.com
To activate and re-validate every new release via SMS will be charged to your bill. Lag is less than 1 sec.

4) iSkoot
Another Skype VoIP-enabled. Virtually, NO LAG!. But limit to Skype voice. No chat.

Nokia 6120 shouldn't have WiFi, you might use 3G unlimited...but quality wise i not sure coz never try before.

My experience by using Nokia E65, the best quality is using nokia built-in SIP to making internet call via WiFi, I tried Fring before but no that good as using the bulit-in one, i mean voice quality. biggrin.gif

the best way is to use wifi for voip since the main objective of voip is to use either broadband or wifi to carry the voice traffic. But then there are some phone that operate tru data like gprs or 3G but than u have to pay for the data connections (3G etc)

well i use only wifi with voip ... but not sure which client that uses either gprs or 3G for voip calls

I'm using E61i. So far only played with the built-in VoIP client provided by Nokia. It works okay over wifi, but not as well as Sipura hardware (and not nearly as well as Polycom). Still, being able to make free international calls from any Starbucks isn't bad.

I checked out the iSkoot page; from a quick read it looks like they have some gateway numbers in the supported countries (e.g., an 03 number in Malaysia) and their software dials that number from your phone. That number then connects the call to the Skype neywork. Here in Malaysia, where IDD calls are cheaper than local calls (at least on prepaid), that doesn't seem like a great deal - with Digi I would pay RM0.38/minute to dial the gateway number, when I could just dial direct to Spain for RM0.18/minute.

Hope more VOIP users can share their experiences here, like;

What VSP (voice services provider) you are using
How was the Quality of services
How much saving you can made per month
What Voip devices you are using, etc. rclxms.gif

I did try calling the test number in fring.

Voice quality using GSM is much better than using 3G in my opinion. I'm not really sure why. Haven't tested calling anyone yet though and hopefully GSM is better because coverage is wider.

As I mentioned before (I think I did), I am on the Celcom D68 Plan.

I'm on Celcom D68 as well.

Compare to WiFi, 3G is having more lag than WiFi. 3G is about 1 sec and WiFi is about 0.5 sec.

All in all, I use Gizmoproject.com. Free calls to both landlines and MOBILES!!! (Provided you and your contacts having active status on "All Call Free (ACF)" plan.)

Not many ppl in Malaysia realise this YET. And yes, may I repeat again, U can call MOBILES (Celcom, Maxis or DiGi lines) for free (with fair usage policy of course).

As a conclusion:
Nokia E61 (or any other 3G/VoIP-enabled phone) + Gizmo + Unlimited 3G (or Wifi) = "untimed" calls.

Since Gizmo works very well with Nokia Symbian phones, I'm assuming 6120 classic as the cheapest HSDPA-Symbian phones:
RM888 (Nokia 6120 classic) + RM0.00 (Gizmo install in 6120 classic) + RM68 per month (+ 5% tax) = "untimed" calls to landlines & mobiles.

I'm willing to share my SIP number for testing purposes. PM me if u're interested.

Surprsingly only 0.5sec delay, is this on-net call (Gizmo-Gizmo) or (Gizmo-Mobile)? coz what i know celcom D68 Max upload speed was roughly 50kbps, and the speed is not too sufficient to made a voip call.

I agreed that not much voip users here in Malaysia..this may due to broadband popularity, consistency and mobility. I guess.

Gizmo-Gizmo = no lag at all. Just like GTalk, YM or Skype.
Gizmo-mobile (via 3G) = lag 1 sec.
Mobile-Gizmo (via 3G) = lag 1 sec.
Gizmo-mobile (via WiFi) = lag 0.5 sec.
Mobile-Gizmo (via WiFi) = lag 0.5 sec.
Mobile-mobile (via Gizmo+3G) = lag 1 sec.
Mobile-mobile (via Gizmo+WiFi) = lag 0.5 sec.

When I mention Gizmo-mobile meaning I'm calling from desktop (thru Gizmo client via 3G) to the other party's mobile number. The other party is using normal GSM line. You need to add international+countrycode for ALL contacts. E.g. for landlines it is 00603XXXXXXXX. For celcom mobiles it is 006019xxxxxxx.

All the above will depend on each party's type of connection (whether 3G or WiFi). Overall, WiFi connection is much better than 3G. It's kind of confusing for me to explain. You need to feel it urself to believe it. And now, I only spend money for Celcom Minutes and D68 plan. No more landline or Streamyx! Bye-bye TM... brows.gif (even Celcom under TM, I'm happy with Celcom service...SO FAR....)

The reason is probably that not many 'ignorant' users know that such a thing exist!

Even out of 10 people that I talk to about iTalk, most of them don't even know head or tail what it is about.

It is up to us to 'educate' them by ensuring that this type of thing exists.

i've already highlighted this VoIP thinggy to my officemates as well as my pals. Most of them reluctant to use VoIP simply becoz

1) 3G is still expensive.
2) Satisfy with current means of communication even though they have to pay more than what I do every month.
3) They know nothing about VoIP's basics.

But I do encourage them to start using their 3G unlimited with VoIP. I even volunteer myself to do the settings in their handphones as well as their desktop/laptop. As a result, they were impressed with VoIP capabilities but not the VoIP reliability (lag issue of course). As for me, I'm happy with current VoIP performance as long as it is 'free'.

Yup, 3G is good for those need mobility Internet access, and not affortable for everyone. Fixed broadband is ok for me since my first consideration is bandwidth rather than mobility.

Lot of ppl know Skype and Skype consider very successful in Voip business, but most of the users use it for on-net call and instant messaging and don't know other great features about VoIP. For me, i use Skype as well since lot of my friend is Skype users, of course i call them for free when they online. But for making off-net call like making oversea mobile call i use Pennytel, this is Aussie company and I found cheapest for time being.

I subscribed for AUD 5 a month (about RM15), I got 50 Free SMS and 50 Free Call to about 40 countries. And they have also untimed call for only AUD 0.08/per call. The most valuable is I got KL DID, mean that I got my Own 03-20xxxxx number, this allow everyone to call my this 03 number wherever I am, mean that the number is roaming with me! Others great features like call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, web-call-back, etc. Myself will strongly recommend you guys to try this out if you made a lot of IDD calls every month or you are frequent traveller. icon_rolleyes.gif

After digging up the functions and features of gizmoproject.com combined with gizmovoip.com, I finally managed to call both landlines and mobile numbers for FREE via my Nokia E61. Now, all my contacts can reach my mobile for FREE (provided that both of us have All Calls Free (ACF) active).

Anyone interested to try this? PM me. You do not need 3G if u're using the Gizmo desktop client. But you definitely need 3G if you want to call from mobile to mobile for FREE.

I know this sounds crazy and the word FREE is too good to be true. But I have tried it. No hidden cost. I can call to any Celcom, Maxis and DiGi numbers.

Gizmovoip is just a small/lite version of gizmo client specifically designed for the mobile. When you install gizmovoip, there is no client installed in your phone. And your phone MUST support VoIP feature. In order to USE gizmovoip, you make INTERNET CALL and not voice call. E.g. Nokia E-series:-

Contacts > [select the contact] > Options > Call > Internet Call (Oh...now we know that Internet Call = VoIP)...

But if you want the full gizmo client installed in your mobile, you need to install the Nokia Betalabs Gizmo for S60. For E61, the Nokia N80IE is compatible. You need to test both installer to see which one works/compatible with your phone model.

Having Gizmo for S60 installed in your phone, to make a VoIP call:-

Contacts > [press right on your keypad. Here you should see Gizmo client] > select "Go online".

Depends on your settings, the Gizmo client will either:-
1) Automatically connect to WiFi or 3G, or
2) Request a connection type (Automatic WLAN, or Manual WLAN, or GPRS].

If you have 3G unlimited, go for GPRS. If you have access to WiFi, select Automatic WLAN. You will be eventually (could take 30 seconds) connected to Gizmo server. Now you can test your account by INTERNET CALLing "611" to hear your account balance, voicemail, etc. YOU FIRST INTERNET CALL MAY JUST CONNECT BUT NO RESPONSE FROM THE SERVER. Call again, then you will hear a lady announcing your gizmo account status. You can test other VoIP numbers for FREE.

As far as i know, currently, Gizmo is giving USD0.10 free call out for us to test the service. Use it wisely. I'm using the free credit to make sure my All Calls Free (ACF) status is active.

Here's a VOIP service I think that's not been mentioned in this thread. I use it with my mobile or landlines to call overseas or long distance calls within Malaysia as it's cheaper than telco rates and equivalent to Skypeout rates.
It's Minowireless
The advantages are

1) You do not need a broadband or 3G/HSPDA connection. Even a GPRS data connection will do which will tell the Mino servers to connect the destination phone with your phone. The data usage is miniscule - something like 1-2 Kb
2) You receive an incoming call in your mobile phone (or landline if you choose) so there are no telco call charges. It's basically similar to a call back service.
3) They have a Java client which works with alot of phones (Mino Mobile). There's also support for Palm and WM phones. This makes Minowireless truly mobile. You can also initiate the calls from your Internet connected PC or mobile phone's Wap browser.
4) They accept Paypal payments (important for me)
5) Call quality is pretty good, minimal latency. About as good as Skypeout.

This is Callback, data usage is minimum coz u just message to inform gateway to call ur mobile and third party phone number at the same time, the advantages is good call quality and disadvantage is incur 2 way charges; mean charges to ur M'sia mobile + ur destination number.

For example rates to M'sia mobile is RM0.15; to S'pore is RM0.05, when u using callback services to call singapore the charges will be RM0.15 + RM0.05 = RM0.20. If you using broadband to made a voip call to S'pore it only cost u RM0.05.
