QUOTE(ks_kore @ Aug 13 2010, 08:40 PM) is Microsoft Security Essentials enough for av purpose? Just for your ref., below is the Graph of missed samples, the lower the better (higher detection rate). Source: AV-comparatives When you putting the word Security together with Microsoft, it doesn't make sense to me.

MSE is the lightest.. but scanning speed is slow. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2353386,00.aspHowever I don't trust MSE in my computer. You are using the same OS, software and AV from same developer and researcher. So what they missed is not covered in AV which suppose to be the last line of defense. I would only use MSE for an older computer and system requirement is an issue.

But seriusly, you could try MSE as it is the lightest, I have a 256Mb machine and even Avira bog down that machine, mind you that Avira is one of the lightest around. If even MSE bog down the system , then remove that and try a HIPS only software such as Gesswall or DriveSentry . HIPS only software is very light but unlike AV you have to use your own decision to decide what is a virus or not, e.g if you download a movie file and HIPS tell you it try to modify startup, it is surely a virus.

most virus comes from thumbdrives nowadays, so disabling autorun on thumbdrives are key. avira provides that, perfect for XP which still do autorun from usb.
vista/win7 disables usb autorun, so mse is just fine for me, light n fast. even detects malware javascripts when i'm surfing, and removing ads from freeware installers lol sorry yahoo!

the latest avira version 10 blocks autorun by default. if that failed, the pc is already infected.
if infected, get dr web cureit. if still not clean, get kaspersky virus removal tool. both are free by the way.
remove old avira, install new clean version.

It's like saying that if I bought a car from Mitsubishi, I can't trust their safety mechanism and I would like put a Subaru one in my car... So what? Microsoft having their own antivirus is a bad thing? Come on! P/S: You really think that MSE researchers and developers are the same that develop Windows and Office?
