Firewall Software (LYN official software poll results & comments)Bold: freeware

Note: Only one Personal Firewall should be installed to your system. This also includes the Firewall on Internet Security Suites. Always uninstall one before installing another. System Reboots required. Windows default Firewall should always be disabled when using a Personal Firewall software. Installing more than one Personal firewall could very much corrupt your Internet connection, cause very slow speeds or even corrupt Windows in general.

If you have anything else that you would like to add to this list, please reply to this thread. smile.gif

currently trying winpooch 0.5.10, which i realize hv smaller memory footprint than kerio pf v 2.1.5 and more choice.
winpooch = 29xxK - 30xxK
kpf v2.1.5 = 4xxxK - 5xxxK (somewhere around that)
d only issue is it doesn't hv any manual, n tips only done briefly. with default filter setting, u wont get anywhere. oh yes, its freeware biggrin.gif

Btw, those listed are personal firewall applications. For Enterprise I suggest Microsoft Internet Security and Accelerator Server 2000/2005/2006.

ZA memory hungry resources.

maybe u could try freeware "jetico"

see result the link below;
http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php

as for antivirus result;
http://www.av-comparatives.org/seiten/ergebnisse_2006_05.php

i am using NOD32 now(i wiuld rate this 2nd best)
...using less memory resources as compared to Kaspersky(the best as many people attest)

definitely...to avoid crashing your PC.

NOD32, is incorporated as an AntiVirus and a Firewall together?

So if I'm using NOD32's AV, I wouldn't have to get a Firewall, would that be right?

ZA seems not popular now...and I also don't like the software now too..since the startup takes some time ...and I need to wait around 1-3 mins before I can start my work sleep.gif...

anyway...what other firewall software you guys using...and whats your guys recommendation? I've tested Outpost..but...damn, too much rules to set sleep.gif...and the interface it's not really friendly

tat will depends on what firewall, every firewall has its own setting style unsure.gif
but most firewalls I tried can auto detect the "safe zone", which should allow those connected to the network to get to the gateway??

only the bad side is, new user will easily get confused with the configuration

JETICO http://www.jetico.com/
the firewall is a freeware and at http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests_overview.php the firewall got the highest mark compare to Look n Stop.

yeah,
i am using sygate firewall now
think it is running lite than my Sunbelt Kerio...

love it but...one more thing..it have a super duper "back trace" option which we can trace who is trying to talk with your PC without authorization...

i always get this message frequently thru my Celcom 3G DataCard...is it someone trying to hack me??

Hmm so looks like ZA is not LYN's first choice anymore? I'm looking for a decent firewall for my new Dell 6400, any recommendations? I know Sygate's pretty good but since there isn't any more updates on it, what's the next best choice?

I'm actually still having ZA 5.5.062 on this desktop without much problems, but it's a fairly old version with no updates..

Btw, anymore ZA users here without major problems? I might stick back to ZA since I'm pretty much used to it already, then again there's no harm in trying better new firewalls.

Which version did you use, if you don't mind me asking? IMO Norton is even slower than Zone Alarm at startup. I've never had any issues with crashing except for compatibility issues when I go online sometimes. Uh..what's bsod?

False again. AVs can't or rarely block Port Scans. And not to mention, infiltration can't be block without a firewall. Thirdly, you cannot monitor or control incoming or outgoing traffic Efficiently and Accurately.

Built in Firewall for XP Pro is no that good, friend. It is only a very minimal portion of a firewall... Unless you really don't know what firewall to use, only you resort to WIN XP Built-In Firewall. Go Get One of these:-

1. Zone Alarm (No longer recommended by many LYN members now)
2. Outpost Firewall (Highly Recommended for Seasoned Users)
3. Sygate Firewall (Update-less.)

and a few more I can't remember....

Cheers!

IMHO,

Built in WinXPPro Firewall:
  • Nuisance, caused me generic win32 error dry.gif
  • The worst protection any firewall can provide
  • Worst protection rating by some websites [I'd posted here before]

    Zone Alarm:
  • If not resource hogging I would say very troublesome when you face TrueVector errors... My friend faced it before, that's very troublesome.
  • Despite it's protection, sometimes outbound connection cannot connect through...
  • False alarms
  • Nuisance pop-ups

    Outpost Firewall:
  • Not user friendly
  • If pro version, better function, but trial.
  • More flexible if you know how to set the config.
  • Can stand side by side with Zone Alarm, besides Comodo's Firewall
  • Can't be nuked like other firewalls. You'll get what I mean.

    Sygate Firewall:
  • Very user friendly
  • Can backtrack IP
  • CAN also be easily nuked for no reason
  • Low security
  • No more updates or security patches available for sygate. That's why I changed.

Tho' I'm BT-ing and not using any firewall atm tongue.gif tongue.gif

Press relase, taken from :

http://www.agnitum.com/news/outpost-firewa...nation-test.php

Outpost was the only one of 13 software firewalls to pass all 38 tests conducted by Guillame Kaddouch, an expert in computer security who operates the security web site firewallleaktester.com. Test results are available on Kaddouch's website at http://www.firewallleaktester.com/termination.php

QUOTE
In the wild malware often choose to terminate the security software in the system they are running on, instead of trying to use complex methods to circumvent them.

QUOTE
Self-defense or self-protection features have become a requirement for any security software solution to be taken seriously as some malicious applications like viruses, Trojans and spyware can disable or shut down security software in order to give themselves the freedom to steal information or whatever payload they have been programmed to activate.

In the summary (the winner) :
  1. Outpost Firewall Pro 4.0
  2. Kaspersky Internet Security 6
  3. Comodo Firewall

Hello guys. I have a problem here. I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall Pro now. I notice that my Sygate takes a very long time to load if my LAN connection is on when I boot my PC. But when I don't switch on my LAN connection during the PC startup, Sygate loads very quickly. In the end, I can only switch on my LAN connection after Sygate loads. Does anyone know why? Thanks.

I changed to a few others, such as Comodo (simple and easy but personally not liking it tongue.gif), Look'n'Stop (rules-based, not recommend for newbie, have a prob - making pc slow shutdown), now using Outpost (so far so good, not prob yet for 2 weeks+)

Go to C:\Windows\System32\ delete TrueVector folder, or ZoneAlarm folder. After you uninstalled it ofc.

I don't think that sygate is a very good choice tho'...
As it's very fragile and nuke-able sweat.gif
But, outpost would definitely be a better alternative.

not so time consuming in configuration if u compare with Look'n'Stop which is totally rules-based. In outpost at least there is some "default" rules sets for u to choose for different programs, mostly automatic, just need some minor adjustments to ur own needs smile.gif

may b it's bcos I shifted from LnS (Look'n'Stop) to Outpost, so it's no big deal with its configuration (compared to LnS) tongue.gif

p/s: I used Sygate for quite a long time b4 I start switching here and there due to no longer support of Sygate...

I'm not sure whether I get it right... by using the example of Outpost, if I didn't add rules to the application, just set allow or block... it will mean "allow all connections" and "block all connections"... there is no limitation or control on the connections allowed... tat might bring some troubles if the user is unaware or careless... it does provide some lvl of protections, just tat the lvl is not very high...

well, tat's just my opinion... do correct me if I'm wrong unsure.gif

That's why Outpost gives you more flexibility by allowing you to choose whether you want that particular software to be generally allowed or blocked. wink.gif

Having the Date "Back-Tracking" Does Not Work IF The Program has a "Anti-Date Tamper" Module programmed in it. I fiddled before on other programs. You put the date before its 30 Trial "Start Date", the program Locks up. You put the date one day before, it locks up too. No point wasting effort. Cheers!

You sure it can't be done on Outpost?
Cos "date locker" can't be activated when Outpost have it's own protection shield. =\

Anyway, just use the trial, find ways to overcome it or change firewall. smile.gif

I used a virtual "time stopper" or a date locker so to call it... And it doesn't work on outpost... I didn't try to disable the real time protection tho'''

Gonna try it now.

And I'm DL-ing PC Tools Firewall... Will report back if I decided to try that. brows.gif

I am not surprise it didn't work. This guys in the Security Field have more ideas than any of us would. LOL. The idea of using dates to activate/deactivate programs has been a long expired idea. It is no wonder that our "amateur" methods of "playing around" it has been long patched.

I've tried various methods personally. And only one would work... Reformat the computer. tongue.gif Another method is to use InstallSpy or something of that sort. It will monitor ALL changes done to the computer after and installation. Then, either you Brute-Force Crack the code in the Registry, OR You Reverse-Engineer the Program. (NOW, THIS IS ILLEGAL IN MOST TIMES. I AM JUST CITING IT AS A METHOD. I HOLD NO DAMAGE CHARGES!!).

All in all, either you pay or *ahem*. For me, use the FREE alternative. What is the point of having it there and not using it? LOL. Cheers!

most probably because of the connection i guess then, but overall, the thing is good(one reason is because it free.. laugh.gif ), easy to configure( will ask before blocking any certain software...)...so recommended pc tools firewall...

dunno about others, any people who knew better about firewall can try this and give ur comment then... thumbup.gif

I have been using ZA7 for almost a week. So far, i don't have any bad experience with it. In fact, i'm quite satisfied. The firewall's auto-learn feature is what i like most as selecting Auto-learn instead of Maximum will result in fewer "Allow" or "Block" questions. However, the auto-learn feature will eventually be changed to Maximum after a period of time(about 1 week for me). This is because ZA has done analysing what programs you are frequently using.

Hello guys. I'm thinking of installing Outpost Firewall. Which antivirus do you think is suitable? As for as I know, Avast! has conflicts with Outpost. So what do you guys recommend? Thanks.

I'd uninstalled Outpost since it's 30 day trial ended.
Using PC Tools Firewall atm. NO problems so far. Quite, I mean very user friendly compared to Outpost.

No extra setup required... thumbup.gif

Do some research. Goto Azureus wiki if you use it. It will tell you which port it uses. Same with Shareaza and other BT Clients/P2P Clients.

Google is your best friend.

Cheers!

Yeah. The Windows Firewall's interface in Windows Vista is about the same as Windows XP's. But I think it's a more powerful one. Therefore, I'm not planning to use any 3rd-party firewall software already. smile.gif

i've installed pc tools firewall plus.
when i wanna shut down my pc, the my pc will hang for about 2 minutes, then shut down.
if i manually close the firewall, followed by shutting down windows, the shut down process is smooth and normal.

anybody face this problem? or can someone recommend me an easy to use firewall? i've tried comodo before.

Firewall leak-tests results (matousec.com)

1. Comodo Firewall Pro 2.4.16.174
2. Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.16 beta
3. ZoneAlarm PRO 7.0.302.000

Personally I think hardware firewall is a better option. It might only need to be turned on in your existing modem.

Comodo Firewall Pro is free. They make money by actually certifying programs and/or websites...meaning if a company wants to have a proof that their websites are malware-free, they'll turn to Comodo for certification...some sort of industrial certification company. Just like how THX certifies cinema that have excellent audio & video installations and space design.

i'm on PC Tools Firewall, i must say it's a good Firewall comparing with ZoneAlarm because, i've got false alarm (like i told you guys earlier in other thread), with this, even after installed Ares, there's no incoming/outcoming connection, when no internet activity, there're really no internet activity... smile.gif, not sure if it something to do with Ares, because, i also re-download Ares from it's site smile.gif

I am using Sygate personal firewall for quite a long time now. then Symantec go take over the company, and result the firewall is no longer updated. I have used ZA, but that firewall makes my unstable, with 0x0000 errors and truevision error thing. I like the sygate's idea of firewall, with the capability to trace back the attack. Anyone can recommend me a free firewall, which is like sygate where you can see individual programs, and program roots etc, apps. I am still using this firewall now.

if it's just a small company then software firewalls should be okay...
If it's a co-operate or comercial company go for router firewall / hardware firewall.

i should also add that a hardware based firewall can be very cheap nowadays especially if protecting less than 10 users. It can be cheaper than the software but functionality is very rigid to being a stateful inspection box...i.e. go /no-go.

Well, it might be cheaper. I'm not sure about the pricing. laugh.gif
If it's really cheaper then HF is way to go.
But large institutions usually use hardware firewalls right? smile.gif

They will always use Hardware Firewalls. The reasoning is simple: They use multiple Switches and Routers. The Central Router(Top of the Router Pyramid) that is directly linked to the internet will have a hardware firewall integrated into it. Most Routers have a HF built in it.

Cheers!

Firewall leak-tests results (matousec.com)

1. Comodo Firewall Pro 2.4.16.174
2. Jetico Personal Firewall 2.0.0.16 beta
3. ZoneAlarm PRO 7.0.302.000

Personally I think hardware firewall is a better option. It might only need to be turned on in your existing modem.

Check the site once more (matousec.com). They've just recently updated it and you'll see how PC Tools firewall fare doh.gif

To quote Softpedia review: "The application is designed for newbies that want to say to their friends they are behind a firewall, but experienced users will soon realize that this is not a too reliable firewall."

I had been Zonealarm using for the past 6 years. Before that was Norton Internet Security (which is a memory hog, and does not perform well at all).

Initially, the earlier version ZoneAlarm was good. Strong firewall and easier to configure. But since beginning of this year, the newer version is a memory resource hog. Eating up my resource, slowing down my PC. Worst of all, it interfere with my p2p, causing the PC to freeze. The culprit was the TrueVector. Did some research in ZA forum, and found out I'm not alone. The solutions offered by forumers in ZA forum, like clearing the Internet Log, temp files, RDB files, ldb files, etc. weren't helpful at all. So, I stop using ZA.

My favourite choice are:

1. Outpost Pro Firewall v4.0.1007 which is what I'm using now. I think it is a very good firewall. Strong and secure. Difficult to kill. Slightly troublesome to set up. Initially there was a lot of message pop-ups asking you what to do with any apps. After a week of usage, it became lesser and lesser (it's learning). And it does not interfere with my p2p. Also not as resource-hog as ZoneAlarm.

2. Comodo Firewall is another good one. It is secure and non-leakable. And it's FREE! I tried this, but then decided to go for the Outpost. Reason being, the Comodo blocks my ActiveSync's port. I set the rules for it, but unable to open up my ActiveSync port. That's the reason I use Outpost firewall till now.

After having a problem with Comodo Firewall Pro, I decide to revert back to Outpost Firewall. Comodo is by far the best free firewall I've ever use; but I get frequent BSODs with Comodo while using uTorrent. Apparently the problem arise from the firewall driver Comodo implement in their firewall: inspect.sys. Anyway, Agnitum Outpost Firewall is easy to use (for me at least, because I'm an ex-Outpost user, before trying out Comodo.) and no BSODs since then. The only lowdown on Outpost is the resource usage, Comodo is light-weight while Outpost use a little more CPU resource.

u can try on Webroot Desktop Firewall , coz it is a pretty good firewall. it is free too.
very flexible settings "automatic and regular rule set" better than the ones in zonealarm.
works perfectly on vista and uses tiny resources.

Have gone through online reviews for this free firewall and some of them states that it is comparable at times to pay-based firewall like ZA Pro

What is the best free firewall now? Sygate has long been discontinued. ZA does not work on my pc, always get this truevision error thing which crashes the pc. PC tools firewall plus which I am using now is worthless at best
*
yup, tat y i jump from sygate to webroot firewall which is free but much more powerful than pctool.

without application filtering and this will be remembered)
8. More protocols are available in the rules

Known issues:

1. FW sometimes shows the wrong path for an application on the pop

2. Quick user guide does not reflect the new changes in the firewall
3. Do not support multiple languages (coming very soon)
4. The firewall does not detect the following leak tests: Thread
injection, DLL injection, OLE automation (PC Flunk)

Have gone through online reviews for this free firewall and some of them states that it is comparable at times to pay-based firewall like ZA Pro

Does it work without problems in Vista?I use it before in XP and it was good.Very easy to configure. thumbup.gif

ever since i started using Vista, i've been waiting for comodo to release their Vista-supported version. i lost patience waiting for the software and lost track of it. early feb, i found that it was out so i started using it. it came with Firewall security and Defense+. It is a good software, monitors all exe files copied onto the computer, closes a lot of ports, auto-learns softwares.

But how good is the Defense+? I want to use AntiVir together with Comodo. Is that good enough to complement Defense+ by comodo firewall?

Does anyone know a firewall software which doesn't slow down the comp when torrenting?

My stupid McAffee firewall will cause my comp to lag if I run BitComet overnight. I guess it cannot differentiate between connection to peers from unauthorized access stuff. Is Zone Alarm any good? I would also like to know which firewall software uses the least amount of resources

Basically, all of them use up resources because they've gotta constantly monitor your incoming/outgoing connections, set McAfee's Firewall to allow your torrent program with "Full Access".

Well, I would like to know one which uses less resources unlike norton's internet security suite thing which hogs up way too much resources.

McAfee Firewall does not have a setting for that. I'm using the older version btw because the newer one offers less customization similar to Vista like products which are meant to be more "user-friendly"

Added on June 3, 2008, 1:16 amIt has Full Access for BitComet but it still lags the comp after I leave my BC for quite awhile. Reason being is that it there are tons of connections going throgh BC and the firewall will slow down the PC by scanning all those incoming connections eventhough the permission is set to Full Access

Tried using uTorrent, small, light and powerful, not sure whether it'll help much though. Check your computer for viruses and/or spyware but update your definitions first. Post your full computer spec please. I'm gonna sleep now, anything add me MSN and PM me, I'll reply you tomorrow.

Matousec still ranks Comodo & Online Armor at the top, no surprise.

http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-...nge/results.php

What surprises me is one newcomer, Netchina S3 2008. Since it comes from China, no surprise coz they do have the Great Firewall of China.

PC Tools Firewall Plus is also surprising since the older test ranks them as the worst, huge improvements for them to climb the charts drastically.

Actually, a lot of firewalling programs can do that, under the "Trusted Programs List".

Depends on your need, what are you looking into Deep Packet Inspection? Application Layer Protection? etc.
Cisco has evolve from just being a network level FW,when it acquired PIX, to also protecting the Apps.

Installing more than one Personal firewall could very much corrupt your Internet connection, cause very slow speeds or even corrupt Windows in general.

when going out or travel we use USB HSDPA 3G modem on laptop,
the USB modem does not has firewall.
can't bring a router with us, a router need 230V power supply.
so a software firewall is good.

gateway/router's firewall is only a basic firewall
for more sophisticated one you need a standalone hardware firewall.
Company/organization's in-house webserver normally has a standalone hardware firewall.

Anyone knows which shop in lowyat selling standalone hardware firewall?

I believe that is not the measure for firewall. It is for proactive security capability of a suite.

Hi i didn't see in the list, Look 'n' Stop Firewall which is a very fast easy to use firewall application that manages your local networks, controls applications that try to access the Internet and detects any intrusion attempts.

Here is the description page of it (homepage):

honestly any test conduct on web.i doubt it..why?
because that self explanatory . it depends on the user itself.
the surfing habit, what installed in the computer..who uses the computer and many factors that affect the effectiveness of the AV

Privatefirewall -
Personal Firewall + HIPS for Windows Desktops and Servers.

https://www.privacyware.com/personal_firewall.html

Highly customizable and more importantly it's freeware. I'm using this at the moment because of buggy state of Comodo Internet Security 6. Probably will stick with it throughout this whole year, provided if Windows Defender is capable enough as stand alone AV protection.

Use third party software firewall :

Or hardening existing Windows Defender :

Or use spare PC as hardware firewall: Sophos XG Firewall Home Edition

Have anyone tried the pfSense and SmoothWall Express ?

These are BSD & Linux based firewall OS..... and YES its OS itself.

Means you do not need any other OS to run it & it can be configured to an extend just like enterprise firewall appliance.

Both have a good browser based GUI, but I find the SmoothWall Express to be more user friendly. But pfSense does packed some punches in terms of features & functions.

Do take note that pfSense is not for beginners, noob is recommended to try the SmoothWall Express instead.

Both runs on old system but better hardware is recommended, nonetheless if you do have an old PC laying around doing nothing, maybe its time to make it a good firewall for your own home network, no harm rite ?

Happy Computing !
