Sifu, just curious, with a budget with around rm3000, what non-OC gaming rig can I get? Budget included display. I prefer to plays RTS like Starcraft 2, Supreme Commander 2 or Rome 2: Total War.

Dear all, any amendment/improvement I should make for the following gaming build to make it more value for money?

i5 4570
ASUS H87M-E
8GB 1600 Kingston RAM
1TB WD Blue
DVD Rom
Sapphire HD7790
CM Elite 371
AcBel 550w 80PLUS PSU

My curiosity:
Possible for me to save some bucks on my mobo? Not going to overclock, don't need too many card slot either.
Is it advisable to go for Haswell(i5 4570) than the old Ivy Bridge processors? Since my mobo will also need to change to support newer processor.
Any other cheaper casing?

Hi all, I need help/suggestion/recommendation on getting a desktop PC for my personal home lab. I am planning to setup a virtualization lab with the following
Win7 x64 -> VMware Workstartion -> 2 x ESXi -> VM (AD, SQL, vCenter, plus 3-5 VMs) all running W2008

Therefore, I will need:
1. i7 that can support 4 cores and HT enabled
2. Lots of RAM min 32GB
3. SSD (240GB)
4. A SATA 3 HDD for VMs
5. Motherboard that support VT-x
6. 22" Monitor
7. DVD
8. Wireless keyboard+mouse
9. Casing+Powersupply
10. Graphics card - Medium to low. May play some games during boredom. I also want to offload GPU power from the CPU
11. Budget - if possible give 2 options with 3K+ and 4K+

Most cheapest 21.5" monitor will be TN panel, cost around RM380-400.
Example: Samsung S22B150N led RM389
While IPS panel of 21.5" cost around RM500.
Example: Dell S2240L led ips RM489

Upgrading from sandy to ivy/haswell u wont see much improvements. If the games that u are gonna play is more graphic intensive, just upgrade your graphic card will do.

A quote from an article to explain briefly what haswell aimed for:
QUOTE
Haswell is all about power-saving and improved integrated graphics. In other words, the 4th Generation Core architecture is built for mobile computing, not the humble ol’ desktop where we wont see the funky new Iris Pro graphics except in BGA trim.

On the desktop things haven’t really moved on since Sandy Bridge arrived on the scene many moons ago. And to be honest if you’re sat on an i5 or i7 Sandy Bridge chip then you’re arguably better off sticking with your current CPU/mobo configuration and spending the cash on something like the Nvidia GTX 770 if you’re after a gaming boost.
