Filipino peacekeeper in Golan Heights wounded

A Philippine UN peacekeeper in the Golan Heights was wounded by shrapnel Thursday amid fighting between Syrian government and rebel forces, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said.

"Currently, he is being treated by medics inside a shelter and is in stable and good condition," a military statement said.

Shrapnel hit the soldier just above the right ankle, it added.

News of the casualty came a month after the Philippine government said it may withdraw from the UN peacekeeping force in the Golan Heights because of security concerns, following earlier abductions of Filipino troops by rebels.

The military statement said "wayward indirect fire" landed at the UN peacekeepers' Camp Ziouni at 0545 GMT.

The camp is located between three and four kilometers (1.9-2.5 miles) away from the fighting, it added.

Philippine military spokesman Brigadier-General Domingo Tutaan told AFP the 340 Filipino peacekeepers will remain in the Golan Heights pending a government decision on the UN mission. Twice in recent months, Filipino peacekeepers were abducted by armed groups.

He said as far as he knew, the government had yet to make a final decision.

The UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) has been monitoring a ceasefire in the Golan Heights between Israel and Syria since 1974.

It has about 1,000 peacekeepers and civilian staff from Austria, India, Morocco and Moldova, as well as the Philippines.

Israel hit by missiles from Syria as civil war flares in Golan Heights

Two missiles from Syria landed in Israel Thursday as fighting between President Bashar Assad’s forces and rebels raged on the Golan Heights.

The Israel Defense Forces said that a “closed military zone” was declared near the Quneitra border crossing in response to the fighting. People were not being allowed inside the area and locals were warned not to work in the fields.

No one was injured on the Israeli side, but two wounded Syrians who came to the border were taken to hospitals in Israel, an IDF spokeswoman said.

“There were two projectiles that landed earlier in open areas in the north and central Golan Heights near the border of Israel and Syria,” she said.

“Initial reports suggest … the missiles were the result of the domestic situation in Syria,” she added, saying the “assumption at the moment” was they had not actually been fired at a target in Israel.

She said the closed zone was set up because of the “internal fighting within Syria.”

surely our intelligence like SB, Kor Risik or MEIO found some leads about Kiram whereabouts by now..i wish M'sia can send spec ops to kill him in Philippine..can copy the US tactics that killed Osama..3 EC725 sending GGK operatives..flying very low beneath radar..or sending them using scorpene..then dump Kiram's body in the Sulu Sea..hehe kill marcel kiram too as a bonus..

Syria: North Korean military 'advising Assad regime'
Between 11 and 15 North Korean military officers are advising the Syrian government forces in tactics and the use of artillery against the rebels, reports claim.

Rami Abdul Rahman, of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper that the North Korean officers were "deployed in a number of areas, including defence factories southeast of Aleppo and at regular forces' positions in the city."

The officers reportedly speak Arabic and "provide logistical support and help with plans for military operations," Mr Rahman said.

He added that they also "supervise artillery bombardments by the regular army."

Similar allegations have been made in a report by the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.

North Korea helped Syria build a nuclear plant that was destroyed by the Israeli military in 2007. There have been repeated reports that Pyongyang is supplying the Syrian regime with weapons technology, including chemical weapons.
