My Experience
After much looking around and consideration I acquired a Probox 5200 mAh. It runs fine. They claim to use Sanyo cells which has a reputation. After being in use for a few months I think that they are good. Prices are relatively higher but sadly they are not being restock.
Just bought another, the bigger 7800mAh. Hope it is as good as the first. Been on shop shelves a while and unlike Romoss they dont come pre-charged so have to do full charge of 8 hours. Keeping fingers crossed but from my experience of my first purchase I think it will proved to be OK.
I do notice there is another brand that also quite good. Enerpad.

Them more decent brands that I am aware of:-
1. Probox - use Sanyo cells, premium look, so so build
2. Eneloop - Own Sanyo branded powerbank, supplied with charger
3. Enerpad
4. Romoss - Utilise Samsung, SDI for the premium model, great build
5. Gigabyte also uses Japan cells, not sure what brand tho

I do hope some of forummers can post long term reviews of various models of powerbanks that we see many people use to give us a rough guide as to which are good buy and which are trash....
A decent powerbank can extend some of our mobile devices so that they can yields more months of services and delays purchase for upgrades while waiting for the right stuff to be released.

Why not go DIY? From all of the decent brands mentioned above does come with quite premium priced no? Say find some decent powerbank case online and coupled it with a protected type of 18650 battery e.g: Keeppower, Panasonic or Samsung SDI or Sanyo, there ya go... But of course price might be slightly cheaper or higher depends on selections, requirements (mAH ratings for battery, protected or non-protected type, brands etc..). Also if you are not those type who are adventurous into D.I.Y, might just go ahead for available brands in the market. Just an opinion...

IINM, battery cells degrade even when you don't use it. So might want to avoid older brands or models. as far as i know, Sanyo has been bought over by Panasonic. and the famous 5200 mAh booster that Sanyo used to sell is being rebranded as Panasonic's, with wireless charging too. so try to get the newer batches from Panasonic instead of getting the old Sanyo mobile booster. I still see the AA and AAA eneloop NiMh being sold, i am not sure whether panasonic is killing off that brand or maintain the brand as it is already quite famous.

True. and to be honest, the prices of these powerbanks that are mostly made in china is very cheap there. Problem is, even the fake ones looks exactly the same if you were to put it next to the original ones. it is much safer if you were to order from their official online store. normally listed in their official website. eg are Pineng etc. and these are normally quite recent batches, since they are straight from manufacturer, unless you choose the older models.

of course these china brands, the quality won't be A grade like Samsung Panasonic etc. but they should be adequate for average use for 2 years etc.

like w00t said, DIY is a good route too, since you can roughly test the age of the cells. but if that is too cumbersome, there are traders like AllnGap that sells his DIY powerbanks that use A grade cells by Samsung. and the price is fair in my opinion. reputable china brands powerbank are sold at similar price in malaysia.

personally, i am using Pineng's one, bought by a friend from China, straight from their official online store. it has been a few months and it still hold good capacity.

and of course, general rule is the true capacity is roughly 0.7 of the rated capacity. which for my 11200 mAh Pineng is 0.7*11200=7840. and this is true, as it can charge my N4(2100 mAh) roughly almost four times of full charge.

it is not about the product itself, one must factor in warranty as well..
good cells can lasts you much like laptop battery duration, which is about 1.5 minimum to 2.5years.

the circuitry already comes with protection board.
no need double protection as it will lose more energy to the built up resistance.
IMHO dunt have to use until Japanese cells unless you want a small unit with higher capacity.

actually my unit is not DIY. It's commercial product, just that i dunt put my own brand.

anyway i only use samsung cells less than half year from production date.
so i dunt keep a lot of stocks to maintain the quality.

well now i'm giving all my users Delta 5V 2A charger which is a good one.
maybe should come out with 2A charging powerbank version eh ??

Good to see more info being presented ere. Just purchased another Romoss siling 2 5200mAh for a fren. The casing build is chosen because that particular fren is quite rough in handling his stuffs. The small form factor is bonus. And got a single cell Valore 2200mAh powerbank as freebie from Challenger. Neat for my old torchlite Nokia that i still use regular for voice calls... ha ha. Valore is a singapore brand that uses Samsung cells think. Challenger carries them.
Reason why I have a need for powerbank is that I am now using N7 to take on mobile duty instead of lugging a 13" laptop and I use the N7 with a BT keyboard, With a powerbank there is a guaranteed one day runtime with a smartwatch also paired to it. Neat.

All the power bank will have only about 80-85% actual conversation rate due to power loss. A 5,600mah power bank will have only about 4,500mah actual capacity. However, it should be enough to recharge about 3 times of a iphone battery already (1,450mah) . Please refer this post for understanding.

It is the conversion loss, depending the IC in use, output current, temperature etc.
