1. No difference. the latest now is DX11 so there wont be problems running old games.

2. If you are happy with your current windows 8, i recommend you not to upgrade it. after upgrading it, i only see aesthetic improvements, not in terms of performance. to add, some features are removed in windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 is using DirectX 11.2 while Windows 8 is 11.1. There's not much difference between both of them and I personally would recommend not to upgrade at this moment due to certain software incompatibility. Wait for a newer update. Also, this update is not small either. It's about 3.6 GBs.

By the way, anyone using Bios A05 for AW17? Don't know what they've changed from A04 to A05 since there's no changelogs from Dell. doh.gif

raymondtong94 I think maybe the first page needs to change the laptop images to the newer one already. brows.gif

to be frank, you should do it yourself. you should check out the gpu swap video at dell. it is really simple. make sure you have all the parts ready (head sinks; thermal pastes and thermal pads; heat sink spreaders);

if u get it done from outside, they are going to cost you easily 300 to 400RM, maybe even more. Yes it's that expensive + not worth it. If I was you, I'd do it myself smile.gif
I will learn a bit or two from it as well (y). It's not that hard. You just need to have patience + time + a non dusty place (y)

grats on ur 780s. Mine telling me how much 1 of it costed you? smile.gif thanks!

To access the GPUs, it is not easy on the M18x. The heatsinks were accessible under the keyboard, compared to M17x which is underneath the back cover.

Ok there will be additional screws and cables to be taken care of then. Still, if done with care i think its not a huge issue yet. Just organize your disassembly then it will be ok smile.gif

yeah, from what i learn through the videos, it is about 80% disassembly of whole laptop. even the monitor is part of the removal. shakehead.gif
even the new Alienware 18 also worked this way.

yeah it's the same as putting in the msata ssd or replacing dvdrom with hdd caddy in m17x r4. almost everything is taken out.

it's not that difficult because the aw internal design is meant for easy upgrades. just remember to check for connected cables before you attempt to remove the covers/keyboard/whatever that is in your way. there is no need for brute force. normally gentle force will do the job.

(when you feel you are putting too much force, it's most probably you're not doing it right; yeah i saw a tech used a screw driver to pry the back cover of a m17x r4 in attempt to uncover the internals. i showed him how to take it off by sliding gently towards me using 2 fingers :/)

normally Alienware and Sager/Clevo are the ones that used sliding method for the back cover. MSI and ASUS are the ones that need prying. sweat.gif
