yes... it can be done... cal-lab can compatible with different brand of lightning protection, cal-lab will perform protection as well (if correct installation only)... in additional, more devices, more Ohm and caused slightly higher power consumption...

Hi GKL,

I have three computers at three different points. 1 DSL, 1 Telephone Intercomsystem (Like offices but I only have one line) So I have two telephone lines. DSL line has fried 4modems so far so I'm guessing surge is thru phone line. None of PC equipment were burnt throughout the years.

Question for you, with CalLab, we protect the DSL and divert the surge to our EARTH cable on the Green in Power Outlet, would that surge become harmful to other equipments attached on the same electrical system?
ie, surge comes thru telephone line, CalLab diverts to Earth in Power outlet, surge then travels to ground via Earth cable, somehow it wanna have a detour towards my other equipment in the house (Is this possible?)

Thanks for taking the time to answer biggrin.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

A lightning strike is too complex to be analysed by words and speculations or guessing what took place after a strike!

The only way a fairly accurate (still not accurate) analysis could be done is to have a complete and accurate survey and measurements of all interconnected equipment - where the locations and ambience are accurately captured.

This is why CAL-LAB often asked customers to describe ALL INTERCONNECTED EQUIPMENT IN EACH SETUP, WITH A SKETCH & WITH ACCURATE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE POWER CONSUMPTION AND HOW EACH IS CONNECTED IN THE SETUP and what are connected to external parts.

Making a sketch of different setups connected together may be useful BUT not necessary - because CAL-LAB attempts to protect your equipment by creating ONE-SAFE-ISLAND at a time!

As to how a strike come in and go out, we dare not even attempt to speculate! We can only anticipate and try to make users and equipment safe from powerful strikes, by installing a correct CLLI correctly at each setup.

But you can read our various pages on this subject in the website - on LIGHTNING SURGE & POWER SURGE / WHY CLLI IS DIFFERENT / LIGHTNING FACTS / etc.

As to choosing an appropriate CLLI, we would not be having so many models & versions, if it was so simple! That's why we have engineers to help when written inputs are sufficiently available!

So what would they recommend? I have three computers, at three separate power outlets (different circuits on breaker), ONE dsl line coming in. Based on history current comes in through phone line and killed adsl modems.

I totally rule out current spikes coming in through power outlets as my house is properly protected by my neighbour's RM30k lightning arrestor.

Thanks!

EDIT: Thanks for reply, will sort the diagram out rclxms.gif

Here is the diagram of my pc setup:

[attachmentid=350146]

So is SD-4C & SF9812DSL sufficient to protect the whole system??

sorry for late reply... just received ur post... sweat.gif

SD9623 designed for RJ11 telephone port which used 4pins (Pin1-4), usually use by ISDN connection or other special equipments... FYI, streamyx only use 2pins (Pin2 & Pin3)...

if u have 2 units of modem/router and located together at the same location, SF9812DSL and SP9201DSL will sufficient to protect from tel line side, but lan cable side still a question bcos the surge may come from lan cable and strike ur modem/router

Which unit do I need? I have only 1 Streamyx line at home and so far have a few modem/router burned by lightning already.

The main phone line comes into my modem/router and the modem/router will be connected to two PCs. I need to protect my phone line. Thanks.
