Preferred brand: ASUS/HP
Budget: RM1900-RM2400
Usage: (postgraduate) doing assignment (frequently with Microsoft office, i.e. word, excel), installing some statistical software like SAS, minitab....., online, reading pdf file, watching drama, playing music. Mostly open notebook for long hours.
Preferred laptop/screen size: 14"
Thanks a lot
*
Can consider these:
14"
Asus A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT645M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8

HP
Envy Dv4-5202TX/5203TX, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM2399[Beats], 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8, black/red
Pavilion Dv4-5114TX, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT630M@RM2399[Beats], 4GB, 750GB(7200rpm), W7HP

Use remaining money to extend warranty to 3 years or upgrade RAM to 8GB (at least 4GB) icon_rolleyes.gif

my G42 fan 99% of the time always rev up and make alot noise. even no program is on.
virus? nope. reset to factory settings after few hours then also liddat.

absolutely i'll buy a cooling pad for my future ultrabook.

Do u think it's a great time to get the XPS 14 now, or shall i wait until it comes out with a new variant/model?
*
How long can you wait? smile.gif
When Intel push out the Haswell this year, they will mandate all ultrabook must have touchscreen (at least that's what is being announced).
If you follow CES 2013, apparently there is a prototype of XPS 14 that has a flippable screen (just like the one in XPS 12) sweat.gif
But Haswell is most probably late (Q3) 2013.

Since you like to clean your laptop, the good thing about XPS 14 is that once you open the back panel, you have full access to all the components, very easy to maintain.
If you want to go SSD aftermarket, the SSD must be thin (< 7mm) to fit in. So a lot of popular SSD brands / models are out. Have seen some videos where users strip the SSD of external case to fit in ultrabook sweat.gif

If you want touchscreen and can wait, why don't you wait for Haswell? laugh.gif
Anyway, just because they make it compulsory doesn't mean its a good feature yo brows.gif
For the time being, there are only a handful of notebooks with touchscreen at the moment, these include:

14"
Acer V5-471PG, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT710M + (1366x768; touch)@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB, W8

Asus VivoBook S400CA=CA006H, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB + (1366x768; touch)@RM2499[2kg], 4GB, W8

HP [Ultrabook] EnvyTouchSmart Ultrabook 4-1124TU, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + [32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm)] + (1366x768; touch)@RM2888[Beats][1.75kg], 4GB, W8

MacBook Pro is not suitable for hardcore gaming unfortunately...
You can consider the Lenovo Y500, or the the following, lighter 15.6" notebooks:
15.6"
Asus N56VZ-S4284H, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1920x1080) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg][B&O], 4GB, 1TB, W8; color: black
Dell Inspiron 15R (Special Edition), i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm)@RM3199, 8GB,backlit keyboard optional, W7HP/W8
Dell Vostro 3560, i7-3632QM + AMD HD7670M + 32GB SSD + 750GB(7200rpm) HDD + (1920x1080)@RM3209[2.57kg], 8GB, W7HB; colors: red/silver/bronze

hmm...how come the 960 is better even though the 2117 and 1007 are newer?

well, its just replacement for one of the old office laptop so budget is below 1.2k.
