Hello guys, can anyone help me recommend a laptop near this price

1. Preferred Brand - any brand
2. Budget - 2k to 3k
3. Usage - gaming + heavy video editing (ae/premiere pro) and also photoshop/lightroom
4. Preferred laptop/screen size anything around or above 14"

an 8gb ram would be nice. if i upgrade the laptop ram on my own. would it void the warranty? can laptop go for 16gb?

thank you very much
*
This one:
Lenovo
Ideapad Y580, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GTX660M + 1920x1080 @RM2999[JBL], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), W7HB/W8, backlit keyboard, 2 yrs warranty (Stock limited)

CPU & GPU powerful enough for all your video editing and photoshop/lightroom.
Stock is limited, going to EOL soon, grab it quick while you can smile.gif

You can upgrade RAM (or ask the reseller to help you), 4G stick ~RM80. It will not void warranty if you do not accidentally damage warranty stickers inside the laptop (normally there is no warranty sticker near RAM slot).
How much RAM a laptop can support depends on:
a. OS - if you use 32bit OS, anything above 4G could not be utilised. W7S, W7HB, etc also has limitation.
b. RAM slots - most laptop has 2 / 4 RAM slots. If the laptop has 2 RAM slots, and 1 of them is occupied by a 4G stick, and you want 16G, then obviously you need to get rid (or trade in) the 4G stick in order to fit in 2x8G. RAM in some ultrabook are fused onto motherboard and has no RAM slot for expansion.
c. Memory controller - this used to be on motherboard, but Intel i-core CPU (like so many other CPUs) has integrated memory controller. Without going into too much detail, if you go i7, your laptop will be able to utilise 16G RAM.

Errr ... how could we help you unless you tell us where you are? smile.gif
Lenovo don't sell online in Malaysia.

Inspiron 14R (Special Edition), i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2049[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), W7HP/W8
This is one of the laptop in Malaysia with most raw power at RM2k price point. Now whether it is enough for you, I really don't know, because I don't know how "heavy" is your video editing tongue.gif The software you listed can utilise quad core.

Im in kelana jaya. Digital mall should have right?

Heavy eh, not that heavy nowadays i guess. But high ram is a must for me now. My multitasking is just stupid since i like to open all 3 apps at 1 time

Gaming wise. I dont care much about "highest" setting. All i want is for normal gaming for latest games.

No smoke simulation or sort on ae. Coz, if i buy the dell, i could buy external hdd. Extra warranty. Does it support 16gb ram?

Dear all,

appreciate your help and advice here. Am looking for a laptop, here's my requirement

1. no specific brand preference
2. not more than RM3k
3. Usage: MS office work (MS Word, Excel, etc) - 30%, internet and email (40%), gaming (mostly simple game like dota 2) - 30%
4. 14" and above
5. Extra - would like something with higher resolution than 1366 x 768 and faster hardisk (>5400 rpm) - if can get SSD within budget that would be a bonus

thanks

For Dell units you can just order online, its more convenient, especially if you are going to extend warranty to 3 years nod.gif
Otherwise, you can deal with "viper88" in Garage Sales as well, he sells original Dell units + warranty + discounts brows.gif

Y480 and Y580 are EOL-ed already, both are pretty hard to find anymore... remaining ones are non-local sets hmm.gif
Perhaps you can save around RM100 more to get the newer and potentially better-performing Y400 nod.gif

It depends on what you want to do with the convertibles, and of course your budget as well nod.gif
Personally I'd stick to the ATIV Smart PC Pro, because it can be "transformed" directly into tablet mode, it is more convenient and easy to bring about; whereas the Yoga, XPS 12 and Vaio 11, despite being converted into tablet mode, the keyboard is still attached = heavier.

I'm not very keen on the Yoga 13 since when it is converted into tablet mode, the keyboard will become the base of the entire tablet, and will be prone to damage and scratches... if you really want a Lenovo, you can wait for the upcoming Lenovo Helix nod.gif

Since both are ULV processors, better get the i5 one since it'll offer better CPU performance nod.gif

Hi, just ignore my username coz my main account got banned. I'm thinking of buying a new laptop/ultrabook to replace my old one. Any recommendations for my requirements? Thanks.

1. Budget - preferably under RM3k but can go up to RM3.2k.
2. Usage - more to office work stuff, video playing, music, no heavy stuff that requires major processing power.
3. Preferably with Windows 8 and touch screen enabled. Also would prefer a built-in optical drive (I know only a handful of ultrabooks have these).

I'm not really familiar with the technical jargons btw.
*
There is no ultrabook with optical drive AND touch screen unfortunately sad.gif
