As suggested by the title, should fresh grads choose a job of a particular field, and learn and strive all the way to excel in that field? Or should they simply get any jobs offered?

I'll graduate soon. I prefer network/IS/Security development/maintenance rather than software/web development. Should people job-hop with jobs of different fields, and end up knowing things, but not in-depth, in many fields? Or should people only choose jobs of a particular field and strive to be a top-notch player of that field?

Agreed. But let's look at this way. If you have the choice, of course be choosey. Let's say you dont, well of course you can't be choosy.

It depends on your personal criterias and goals in your working life. Number one rule of thumb is SALARY!!!

some industry need to job-hop inorder to get your salary increase.... like accountant usually,.....

IT not sure, but still depend what you learn.... if you are able to learn some big big software then is a good benerfit to your salary too.... otherwise if just being a technician.... I think is difficult to get increament. unless you are technician for different field....

Just from what I heard.... smile.gif

For me salary doesnt really matters..experience does..if you are a noobie of course salary low lor..but if got 2-3 yrs of experience + skills then you are in demand biggrin.gif

If were presented with many choices of jobs then of course you can be choosy thumbup.gif
but if no opportunities then just be content with watever jobs are available first lor..

While you were working you can still hunt for fresh opportunities like my friend owez 'jump ship' bcoz of new opportunities are always available..biggrin.gif

I'd say grab any job that you can.... dont be choosy...

I've personally known few & heard alot of ppl who jobless for more than 1 year although s/he is not choosy when coming to job...

Well, I've discussed this before on other thread, but to some, being CHOOSY is the only way.... which I totally disagree...

Ask yourself this question.... would u be able to support yourself if you are decline a job offer now? and perhaps nobody is going to offer you any job for the next 6 months?

Well, if you plan to be choosy, ultimately its your choice, but I strogly againts it...

Don't put too much expectation on your new job. What you learn might not be use in the real world doh.gif

For my 2 cents.. don't simply stuck in a job that you do not like for too long as you may not have chances to pull yourself out from there if you stucks too long.

At the same time, don't simply reject any job also.. as you needs money to survive..

If Money Vs Gaining Experiences and building your carrer path. I will vote for Gaining experiences and preparing yourself for better bargain in the future. Job hopping may get your salary up faster but it is not healthy for long run as if you don't have ingredient.. you won't able to stay in one company for long. And from your past working histories, one can easily decides to hire you or not as you have a bad record.

No doubt that job hopping might be a way to increase your salary but it is more suitable when starting your career at the early stage. Afterwards when stabilise and have decent and good job prospect then it is better stick to it and build from here rather changing job every 1-2 years.

As a fresh grad, just go for any job that offers a reasonable paycheck with good opportunities. It won't really matter if its a job you really like or dislike, because no matter what line you go into, the experience stays with you and is yours to keep and utilize in the future. Possible after a year or so, start job-hopping if you feel you're moving too slowly, or when you realize there's more to gain elsewhere.

I'd say job hop more for your personal interest, not for the sake of a hefty paycheck. Because when you do things you like, you get motivated and tend to work harder. That conmensurates nicely for a promotion, which will lead to a good paycheck later.

Do you want more exposure or would you like financial security more? Perhaps security first, but start thinking about your exposure soon enough.

The catch is it is pretty normal that Chinaman Company will not send you for Training or give you much benefits whistling.gif . I am not to say there are no.. but hard to Find. I have been working in 3 Chinaman Company before joining the MNC.. and it changed my POV about this.. used to think can learn more thing in Chinaman Company that do one leg kick but then.. looking around of my colleagues that is in this MNC since day one of their working life.. they gain pretty much more then what i got... not to say their salary too.

try hunting for that passionate job within a month while also being aware of the other positions your application allows you to undertake. it's good to be a specialist in a certain field but with the ease of being diverse in many things and the mentality of a third world country, there isn't any point being a specialist unless you're acknowledged by the system here.

you'd be better of starting with something you love or at least trying to get it then not trying at all. like i said, if within a set period of time you're still jobless then it's up to you to decide whether or not to try something you might be averagely well at but will have no problem training in it.

after all, an extra skill learnt is beneficial any time. smile.gif

i think it's kinda hard to get a job offer these days, and usually fresh grads are not well paid... most of the people they looking for experienced people which is a bad news for the fresh grads... so i think it's better to grab the job and gain experiences then you can go for what you want...

No. It is not wise for fresh graduates to choose their jobs. Apply whatever job that states "Fresh Graduates are encourage to apply" .
