hello?
wake up and smell the coffee la doh.gif
now, average salary for fresh grads are less than RM2K.

Yes. Average figure is around that. But sometimes we'll see fresh grads are underpaid and very well paid.

As suggested by the title, should fresh grads choose a job of a particular field, and learn and strive all the way to excel in that field? Or should they simply get any jobs offered?

I'll graduate soon. I prefer network/IS/Security development/maintenance rather than software/web development. Should people job-hop with jobs of different fields, and end up knowing things, but not in-depth, in many fields? Or should people only choose jobs of a particular field and strive to be a top-notch player of that field?

It's definitely alright for fresh grads to choose their job.

People work for money too, it does not make sense for a Degree graduate to settle for a 1.3k job at KL. And I am lucky that I did not make decision too fast and waited for a while so that I can work in a company that I'm satisfied with now.

But please also be noted that it's a competitive world thus it's not easy to get your dream job right after you graduated. It's however easier to get a job if
- You can communicate well in English
- You've good results and had experience in Industrial Training/Practical
- You speak the right thing and show the right attitude during interview.
- You are not showing your strong desire in salary during interview.

You've the right to choose, but be realistic. Don't give too high hopes on getting 3K salary in your first job right after graduation. As long as it's not too low and you think you like the job and should be able to learn many things from it, go for it.

You are totally right on that. Nowadays, there is an emphasis on strong communication skills and leadership qualities. Technical skills can always be learned but it is how one present themselves and bring out the best in themselves and the people around that attract big companies and big cash.

Always remember to do your research and try to take the extra step to impress your future interviewers. There are hundreds of applicants with the same degree and same qualifications as you are, therefore you need to go the extra mile if you want to be above the rest.

For me, I don't think it's dumb to choose a job with a low pay salary. As long as you feel that you could survive with that amount, then it's your choice. smile.gif

i think for us fresh grads, salary aint that important. whats important is we get to learn what we do, we are still young and will get many more opportunities in the future.. for fresh grads i feel that we should just come out and know about the working life, how it is, how to work in a company/office and the environment around it. just my thought biggrin.gif

btw, need some advise, am currently a software engineer in a local listed company which does HR softwares, i do the programmings etc. Been in the job for 6 months right out of college, participated in the MDC intern and now will be getting my confirmation letter soon. initial plan was to work for a year before leaving, however i was wondering as i am in the IT field, if we come out to work in another company, we need to learn the programming language anew again cos there are so many programming languages around and not all uses the same. do u all think it will be difficult? even though currently the language used in the company is already obsolete?.. do u all think it will be hard to find another job that is IT related ?

A good programmer can adapt to any language easily enough if he puts some effort in it. IT is a field that always advances so you're stuck with learning for the rest of your life.

That is a good attitude to have. Learn and gain all the experience you can so that you can prove your worth in your next job and earn more and move towards a successful career path.

Is ok to start low pay. But don't waste too much time in it. Leave after 1/2 or 1 year.

i once had a friend whos first job as a fresh grad salary pops 4k, annual leave 30days. he end up leaving that job after 6 months cos the job scope will very propietory which he don't want to spent the rest of his life doing it.

so there are chances you can get good jobs, if you are really opting for it.
