coz they know they got nothing to be afraid of..they have far superior army..world's economy trade is held (majority) by them..if US butt in their conflicts..China can easily stop their production of Rare Earth Elements..rendering US and the world stocks market dropping down..US really worried bout that..i think it's not wrong to say China carried the Soviet's military legacy of "brute force and strength in numbers"..

building a frigate took about 4,5 years from laying the first keel to breaking the labu sayong, and then there's the trial and testing.(except the chinese, they've churned out type 052 destroyer at rate faster than the US navy officer preparing a slide show)

Xi Jinping orders generals and senior PLA officers to serve as privates

Chinese generals and senior officers will have to serve as the lowest-ranking soldiers for at least two weeks under a measure by President Xi Jinping to shake up the military and boost morale.

Xi, as the nation's commander-in-chief, issued the order over the weekend, which the Ministry of National Defence publicised on its website.

It dictates that officers with the rank of lieutenant-colonel or above must serve as privates - the lowest-ranking soldier - for not less than 15 days. Generals and officers will have to live, eat and serve with junior soldiers during the period.

WIG aircraft – a new joint project between Russia and China

Recently the Chinese press announced the first test flights of the new Chinese Wing In Ground Effect (WIG) aircraft CYG-11. In its appearance and technical characteristics it completely replicates the Russian WIG aircraft Ivolga, as Vasily Kashin, an expert at the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, points out.

Thus, one can state that the Russian-Chinese cooperation in the area of WIG aircraft development has begun to bear fruit. Ivolga WIG aircraft, which was designed by a group of engineers headed by Vyacheslav Kolganov, is produced by the Polet group, which is primarily focused on space technologies.

user posted image

It is a known fact that Polet has had contacts with the Chinese and Kalganov himself made a long business trip to China in 2011. Prior to that, other experts in this area, employees of the Alexeyev Central Design Bureau, which even back in the USSR days was the main center for the WIG aircraft design, had visited China as well. With the help of those experts China already designed a few types of WIG aircraft in the past few years.

The organization of WIG aircraft production in China can hardly present a problem, especially given the fact that Ivolga utilizes two ordinary automobile engines BMW S38, the acquisition of which by the Russian or Chinese producers is not difficult. More interesting is another issue – will the Chinese WIG aircraft meet with demand.

The history of WIG aircraft in the USSR and in Russia was not very successful. The USSR was the leader in WIG aircraft design. Famous in this area was the breakthrough work of Rostislav Alexeyev. The giant WIG aircraft called KM (The Kaspian Monster) was made by his team. The KM aircraft had the takeoff weight of 544 tons and for a long time remained the largest aircraft in the world. In addition, several large airborne troops WIG aircraft Orlyonok capable of transporting 150 paratroopers and an experimental WIG aircraft carrier of Loon ballistic missiles were built for the Naval forces.

However, despite the rapid progress of WIG aircraft, even back in the Soviet days the military got disenchanted with this type of technology and refused to finance its development. From the point of view of the military specialists, due to their lower speed WIG aircraft are a lot more vulnerable to fighter planes and enemy's missiles than airplanes. In addition, they are hopelessly inferior to ships in terms of their range, carrying capacity and armament. Large WIG aircraft are also quite expensive. The combination of ordinary ships and aviation allows the military to achieve their goals with lesser means. One must point out that WIG aircraft have not gained popularity with the US Armed Forces or other large Western countries. Obviously, the military there have arrived at a similar conclusion.

At the same time, in China WIG aircraft could find their niche with the Armed Forces due to the unique geographic conditions, which are not found in Russia or in the Western countries. In the South China and East China Seas China is engaged in territorial disputes over the islands that are too small to host airports and are located too far from the continent for helicopters to be used to fly there. Compared to hydroplanes WIG aircraft can land in less favorable sea conditions and transport people and cargo at a lower cost. WIG aircraft can be useful for transportation and delivering of supplies for the airborne troops in conditions when the Chinese Air Force already has advantage in the air, for example during an airdrop operation against Taiwan. Thus, there is a hope that China becomes a global center of WIG aircraft development.

With reference to my previous posting about China's aggressiveness this is what I meant:

China warns Philippines to immediately withdraw from disputed islands

“The Philippine side is trying to use this to negate China’s territorial sovereignty and attach a veneer of ‘legality’ to its illegal occupation of Chinese islands and reefs,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website (www.mfa.gov.cn).The Philippines must immediately withdraw personnel and facilities from the islands, the ministry added, listing those which it said Manila was occupying.
Manila asked the tribunal of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to order a halt to China’s activities. But the convention did not apply in this case as what the Philippines was actually asking for was a decision on sovereignty, the ministry said.“China’s refusal to accept the Philippines’ request for arbitration has full grounding in international law,” it said.

Chinese fighter jets swarming near Senkaku islands
TOKYO: Chinese military planes, mostly fighter jets, made more than 40 flights close to Tokyo-controlled islands at the centre of a territorial dispute on a single day this week, a press report said Saturday.

The flights took place on Tuesday, when eight Chinese marine surveillance ships entered the 12-nautical-mile territorial zone off the islands in the East China Sea, which Japan calls the Senkakus and China calls the Diaoyus, the Sankei Shimbun newspaper reported.

“It was an unprecedented threat,” one of the officials was quoted as saying.

CHINA DEPLOYS ANTI AIRCRAFT CARRIER MISSILES OFF COST OF TAIWAN

China has deployed near Taiwan a powerful missile designed to take out US aircraft carriers as Beijing strengthens its ability to prevent US forces from aiding Taiwan during potential conflict.

The deployment of the DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile comes as China’s army develops greater long-range and offensive capabilities. Those advances pose a challenge to US forces as Washington looks to build up its military presence in east Asia to balance out China’s rising might.

The DF-21D missile is a particular worry for Taiwan as it relies on US forces to back it up against threats from the mainland, which has not renounced the use of force to take the island it regards as part of its territory.

The missile limits the US’s ability to send aircraft carriers into the strait unchallenged to support Taipei, as it did in 1996 when China conducted missile tests in the strait during the run-up to the island’s first democratic election. Taiwan itself has no aircraft carriers.

China Orders Troops and Tanks to North Korean Border

China is reportedly beefing up its military presence on the North Korean border amid heightening tensions in the region.

The troop mobilisation is said to be taking place along with deployment of dozens of tanks in the strategically important border region with North Korea, which is separated by the Yalu River.

The Chinese military is on high alert over the ongoing tensions in the Korean Peninsula.

Second warship from US to arrive in July
By Alexis Romero, The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The arrival of the second warship acquired by the Philippines from the United States has been moved to July as the Filipino sailors who will operate the vessel continue to undergo training.

Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said the BRP Ramon Alcaraz has complex equipment that requires comprehensive crew training on ship equipment use, maintenance and other subjects.

“Tentatively, the arrival in Manila has been slated for July,” Fabic told The STAR in Filipino over the weekend.

“Our personnel are undergoing rigorous training since the ship’s equipment is complicated,” he added.

Fabic also said that Navy chief Vice Adm. Jose Luis Alano is in the US to inspect the vessel, which is docked in Charleston, South Carolina. Alano is expected to return to Manila next week.

The arrival of the BRP Alcaraz, he said, will boost the capabilities of the Philippine Navy as the vessel will augment water assets being used for patrolling and disaster response.

BRP Alcaraz was acquired from the US Coast Guard, which largely used it for law enforcement, drug and migrant interdiction, and search and rescue. The ship was turned over to Philippine officials in the US last May.

Palace clarifies defense chief’s US bases remark

DEFENSE Secretary Voltaire Gazmin did not say that US bases would be allowed in the Philippines, Malacañang clarified yesterday.

Only in case of war, or in an extreme emergency, could the US military be allowed to base here, the Palace made it clear.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte clarified Gazmin’s statement that US forces could use the country’s military bases in case of a war between the US and North Korea.

Valte said the return of the US bases does not refer to the “present situation.”

She said “extreme emergency” means war.

The Palace official added the Constitution also provides the answer. Article XVIII of the 1987 Constitution bars US military bases in the Philippines except after a new treaty between the two countries and a nationwide referendum.

However, there is an existing Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the Philippines and the United States, which requires either of the countries to come to the aid of its ally if it is attacked by another country.

US army seeks new technology to replace GPS

The US army is working to limit its dependence on GPS by developing the next generation of navigation technology, including a tiny autonomous chip, the director of the Pentagon’s research agency said Wednesday.

DARPA, the research group behind a range of spy tech and which helped invent the Internet, was also the driving force behind the creation of the Global Positioning System, director Arati Prabhakar said at a press conference.

“In the 1980s, when GPS satellites started to become widely deployed… it meant carrying an enormous box around on your vehicle,” she said.

“Now it’s got to the point where it’s embedded not just in all our platforms but in many of our weapons,” as well as in many civilian devices, she said.

But “sometimes a capability is so powerful that our reliance on it, in itself, becomes a vulnerability,” she added.

“I think that’s where we are today with GPS.”

user posted image user posted image

Among the fears: the GPS signal could be scrambled by an adversary, as happened recently in South Korea.

Starting in 2010, DARPA has been working on a variety of programs aimed at developing new navigation and positioning technology — at first with the goal of extending their reach to places where satellites don’t work, such as underwater.

But now, amid fears of over-reliance on — and possible vulnerabilities with — global positioning satellites, experts are looking to create not just a companion, but an alternative to GPS.

To that end, researchers at DARPA and the University of Michigan have created a new system that works without satellites to determine position, time and direction, all contained within a eight-cubic-millimeter chip.

The tiny chip holds three gyroscopes, three accelerometers and an atomic clock, which, together, work as an autonomous navigation system.

DARPA envisages using this technology to replace GPS in some contexts, especially in small-caliber ammunition or for monitoring people.

Another approach would use existing signals, such as those generated by broadcast antennas, radios, telephone towers and even lightning to temporarily replace GPS.

Prabhakar emphasized there “will not be a monolithic new solution, it will be a series of technologies to track and fix time and position from external sources.”

RMN ready to sue those politicising Scorpene issue

LUMUT, April 29 — The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) will not hesitate to take legal action against those continuing to make slanderous remarks and politicising the issue of the Scorpene submarines particularly during the election campaign.

RMN chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar said he had received information that several opposition candidates were continuing to dispute the purchase of the vessels besides slandering that the submarines were not functioning.

“The opposition parties are relentlessly making the submarines the subject of their campaign... these are all slanderous... I have heard a lot of stories and I’m gathering evidence... I challenge them to make the statements in writing if they dare.

“Then be prepared to face defamation suits... we have been too soft with them earlier,” he told reporters after a gathering with RMN personnel at the Lumut RMN Base here today.

He said both vessels, namely KD Tunku Abdul Rahman and KD Tun Abdul Razak, were in the best condition and had in fact dived to the maximum depth and fired underwater missiles which had hit the target 55km away.

“I’ve sailed (in the submarine) three times... they went well and, in fact, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng himself had sailed (in the vessel) and he had acknowledged the capability of the submarine and was proud of its capability,” he said.

He said other countries had recognised and respected the capabilities and efficiency of the submarine crew in operating the two submarines.

Meanwhile, on the claim that First Admiral (Rtd) Datuk Abdul Imran Abd Hamid was prevented from campaigning at the Lumut base, he said the RMN did not allow ceramahs or political campaigns by any political party in the area.

“Former Prime Minister Tun (Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) was allowed in because he did not talk about politics, he came here to talk about solidarity while Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi came here in his capacity as the defence minister.

“But for Abdul Imran, I’m sure he will talk on politics interspersed with slander and will anger the personnel here... we don’t want any agenda to be brought in that will divide the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the number of military voters and their spouses registered in Lumut was 14,231 and 12,766 of them would be voting early at the polling centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pangkalan TUDM Lumut.

He said the RMN had also intensified enforcement in Sabah waters with the collaboration of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and the Royal Malaysia Police throughout the election period so that the security of the people and country was safeguarded. — Bernama

Saudi Tornados back in action after upgrades
24 April 2013 Wednesday

The upgrading of the Royal Saudi Air Force Tornados has been completed. The final aircraft being returned being photographed at Malta on its route back to the Kingdom.

The BAE Systems end of year investor presentation confirmed that “Under the Saudi British Defence Co-operation Programme (SBDCP), orders totalling £3.4bn were awarded for support through to 2016, including the provision of manpower, logistics and training to the RSAF…. Under the TSP, the upgrade of the RSAF Tornado fleet is complete, with all of the contracted aircraft having been delivered back into the RSAF fleet. Delivery of Storm Shadow missiles to the RSAF under the TSP is progressing in line with the agreed programme schedule.“

The RSAF fleet of Tornado low-level, medium-range strike fighters will be receiving MBDA’s stealthy Storm Shadow medium range cruise missiles, and the MBDA/Boeing Brimstone anti-armour missile.

The upgrade programme is believed to give the Tornado fleet active life until at least 2020.

Two of the new Saudi Arabian Typhoons have also left Warton, near Manchester UK to join the RSAF fleet. They too are expected to make a technical stop in Malta today.
