Brahim’s Launch Its Jordanian Factory

Brahim’s Overseas Ventures Sdn Bhd trough Arab Ready Mealc (ARM) LLC will be supplying combat ration pack to the military of Jordan. ARM is a joint venture between the former and King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB), a military institution under the Royal Jordanian Armed Forces.

The project is a result of King Abdullah II’s visit to Malaysia in 2009 to look at companies involved in the supply of combat ration packs to UN peacekeepers as well as military in this region.

A dedicated manufacturing factory has been developed in Jordan on a 2 hectares land and officiated on April 15.

Man shot dead outside RTD office

SEREMBAN: A 39-year-old man was shot dead by an assailant along Jalan Seremban-Tampin at the entrance to the Road Transport Department state headquarters here yesterday morning.

In the 9.30am incident, the victim, N. Ragunathan, who worked as a runner, was driving alone in his Proton Perdana to the RTD, when two men on a black-coloured Yamaha 125Z motorcycle pulled up alongside his car. As the car stopped along the road the pillion rider then jumped off the motorcycle and fired three shots at Ragunathan.

"The shots hit his head and body," said State Criminal Investigation Department Chief Assistant Commissioner Hamdan Majid at a press conference at the state police headquarters here yesterday. Hamdan said the assassins then escaped from the scene.

"We believe that they are locals based on their facial features as described by witnesses," he said.

Ragunathan's body was taken to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.

Hamdan said that the police are still investigating the motive behind the killing.

He also said that the police are looking into whether the case is linked with two other murder cases here, which used the same modus operandi.

On April 14, Tan Kok Soon, 56, was shot dead by an assailant in front of his wife and two children while dining at the Oakland Commercial Centre, Seremban 2, here.

The assailant approached Tan and fired several shots at him before fleeing on a motorcycle.

Meanwhile, on April 12, J. James, a 45-year-old officer at a security company was shot dead by two hitmen on a motorcycle when he stopped his car at a traffic light at the intersection near Taman Labu Jaya and Taman AST here.

"We have yet to make any arrests on the two previous murder cases, but are checking if all three cases are linked," said Hamdan.

Tejas grounds Medium Combat Aircraft project

Troubles in India’s ambitious Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project has inflicted gaping wounds where it would hurt the Indian Air Force (IAF) the most—the future plans for an Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has “put on hold” the AMCA project that is being spearheaded by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA).

The reason for the sudden decision to send the AMCA project—which began in right earnest in 2006 as the Medium Combat Aircraft (MCA) development in 2006—to cold storage is to help ADA to focus all its energies to first work on completing the much-delayed LCA project. “ The AMCA has been put on hold for the moment. This decision was taken recently to let the ADA focus on the LCA project, ” top Defence Ministry sources told The Sunday Standard. The AMCA project, for which the IAF provided the final Air Staff Qualitative Requirements (ASQR) in April 2010, may be taken up at a later date, sources said. But that will still be far away in the future.

India will buy Rafale planes from the French Dassault Aviation as part of its 126 Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA); in the tender there is a provision to buy another 63 as a follow-on order. That apart, India is working on the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) in collaboration with Russia. With the final agreement on the design and development of the FGFA three months away, India will get at least 140 FGFAs for induction by 2027. Considering that most of the capabilities of AMCA will be covered by the MMRCA and FGFA planes, the revival of the AMCA will be a well thought-out one, sources said.

The AMCA’s envisaged features include stealth, multi-role operations, adequate precision strike capabilities, including critical first-day missions such as Suppression of Enemy Air Defence (SEAD) and Destruction of Enemy Air Defence (DEAD).

The much-touted Tejas has taken 30 years already, at an escalated project cost of Rs 5,489 crore. Since the LCA project was sanctioned in 1983 at a cost of Rs 560 crore, the time overrun has resulted in a 10-fold increase in the project cost. The plane is yet to get even its Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) so that the IAF could take the plane for a spin. But sources pointed out that the LCA still lacks certain critical capabilities, including a reliable radar, and is deficient in at least 100 technical parameters. “ The plane cannot fly on its own. It needs a lifeline in the form of support and monitoring of its systems from the ground by technicians, ” they said.

The LCA, in fact, gave creditable flying displays during the AeroIndia show in Yelahanka in Bangalore in February this year, and followed it up with weapons firing to hit both ground and aerial targets during the Iron Fist fire power display by the IAF in the Rajasthan’s Pokhran ranges, again in February this year. “ The common man thinks the plane is doing fine, its engine sounds great and the manoeuvres are perfect. But those flying and weapons firing displays are done with ground monitoring and support. The plane is still not ready to flying on its own, ” sources stressed. Their guess is the LCA may not meet its schedule of obtaining the IOC before July this year and it could take till December this year or early next year before it is ready. To give an example of LCA’s troubles, the sources noted that LCA was grounded for three months between September and December 2012 following problems with its landing gear. “ Normally, a combat plane is ready for its next sortie following a 30-minute attention from ground service personnel soon after it has returned from a mission. In the case of LCA, after a single sortie of about an hour or so, it needs three days of servicing before it can go for its next sortie, ” they said.

At present, the IAF has placed an order for 40 LCAs Mk1 to raise two squadrons by 2016-17 with HAL which is the nodal agency for production of Tejas. But these will be delivered with the American General Electric F404 engines which provide only 80 Kilo Newton power.

Later, 80 more LCAs of its Mk2 version will be ordered for raising four more squadrons. The LCA Mk2 will be powered by the GE F414 engines that provide a 90 Kilo Newton thrust.

Pakistan Acquires Chinese Made PG99 (CS/SA1) wheeled Anti-Aircraft Guns

user posted image

Pakistan purchased a batch of Type PG99 (CS/SA1) anti-aircraft guns from China’s POLY Group in 2011.

This type of anti-aircraft gun, which is also used by the PLA Army, was upgraded from GDF-02 that China imported from Switzerland in the earlier years.

Mounted on a 6 x 6 truck, the PG99 CS/SA1 is a self-propelled variant of the Type 90 35 mm AA system, previously available only as a towed AA piece. The system is based on a licensed Oerlikon GDF-002, and is credited with a 1175 m/s muzzle velocity, 3200 metre effective range, and 2 x 500 rounds/min rate of fire, with 360° traverse and +92° to -5° elevation.

The CS/SA-1 is suitable for point and coastal air defence. It is usually deployed near military bases, airfields, tunnels, islands, and along the coast to defend Sea Land of Communication (SLOC), ports, bridges and other important assets.

Lahad Datu: PKR's Penampang candidate Darell Leiking claims likely to be named among Sulu incursion plotters

PENAMPANG: PKR candidate Darell Leiking has stepped forward to claim that he would be named as one of the Opposition leaders likely to be named for allegedly plotting the Sulu incursion to Sabah.

Darell said he came to this conclusion because he, with PKR leaders R. Sivarasa and Tian Chua, had made a trip to Manila prior to the February intrusion.

He said the trip had nothing to do with the Sulus but that they were there to get information on wanted conman Manuel Amalilio, who is accused of cheating RM1bil from thousands of Filipinos and now jailed for two years in Sabah for holding a fake Philippines passport.

"We condemn the Sulu incursion and we hope no one distorts the facts to make us look bad," said Darell who is embroiled in a David-and-Goliath match with seasoned Kadazandusun chief Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in Penampang parliamentary seat.

Darell urged the authorities to publicly name the three Opposition leaders accused of the plot so they can defend themselves in court.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi has stated that two of the Opposition leaders involved in the Sulu plot were from Peninsular Malaysia and another from Sabah.

Darell, who said at a ceramah on Friday that he could be one of those accused of plotting the Sulu incursion, said Saturday that the authorities kept changing the story regarding the Sulu incursion.

Bulgaria will supply 500 APCs to Iraq

Bulgarian Telegraph Agency informed that Boyko Borisov, prime-minister of Bulgaria signed a deal to supply 500 light armoured MTLB APCs to Iraq.

Decision to sign the contract was made on May, 31, 2012 in the presence of Sadoun al-Dulaimi, Iraqi acting Minister of Defence at Hemus 2012 International Defense and Security exhibition.

After the exhibition opening Borisov informed that the cost of the vehicles to be supplied to Iraq shall amount to around 300,000 levs per unit and total cost of the contract shall amount to 150 mln levs (appr. USD 77 mln). He also mentioned that MTLB APCs were produced at Terem plant in Tyrgovishte town and one MTLB will be sent to Iraq to undergo trials.

Borisov also said that 36 mln euro deal for supply of special-purpose Kintex equipment from Bulgaria to Algeria will be completed soon.

In addition he offered Liu Sheng, deputy Director of People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department to purchase ball ammunition. Borisov joked that one bullet for each Chinese soldier would be enough.

Bulgarian prime-minister called on all countries present at the exhibition to purchase Bulgarian weapon systems, he underlined that they have never received any quality reclamation.

Prime contractor for MTLB to Iraq will be Terem-Khan Krum tank repair plant, Tyrgovishte, Bulgaria. The plant is a part of Terem EAD association which is subordinated to Ministry of Defence of Bulgaria.

The supplied vehicles will be discarded from service in Bulgarian army. Prior to delivery the vehicles will be overhauled and upgraded. The full scope of the upgrade was not unveiled but it is known that rubberized tracks will be installed as well as system designed by Bulgarian Politechnika firm which includes air-conditioner with auxiliary power unit that ensures comfort conditions for the crew in hot climate over a long period of time without giving additional load for the vehicle's main engine.

Iraqi MT-LB converted into a SPAAG armed with a ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft gun.

Iraq MT-LB converted into a SPAAG by mounting a ZU-23-2 23 mm twin anti-aircraft gun on the rear part of the vehicle. The gun had its wheels removed and as such can not be easily dismounted and used separately. There were at least two variations of this conversion. One with the ZU-23-2 mounted in an open-topped turret and one with the ZU-23-2 mounted on a platofrm extending beyond the hull of the MT-LB with a roof for the gun operators. The second version was most likely intended to be used in a fire support role as the roof would hinder the gun's sights at high elevation
