Lahad Datu: PKR's Penampang candidate Darell Leiking claims likely to be named among Sulu incursion plotters

PENAMPANG: PKR candidate Darell Leiking has stepped forward to claim that he would be named as one of the Opposition leaders likely to be named for allegedly plotting the Sulu incursion to Sabah.

Darell said he came to this conclusion because he, with PKR leaders R. Sivarasa and Tian Chua, had made a trip to Manila prior to the February intrusion.

He said the trip had nothing to do with the Sulus but that they were there to get information on wanted conman Manuel Amalilio, who is accused of cheating RM1bil from thousands of Filipinos and now jailed for two years in Sabah for holding a fake Philippines passport.

"We condemn the Sulu incursion and we hope no one distorts the facts to make us look bad," said Darell who is embroiled in a David-and-Goliath match with seasoned Kadazandusun chief Tan Sri Bernard Dompok in Penampang parliamentary seat.

Darell urged the authorities to publicly name the three Opposition leaders accused of the plot so they can defend themselves in court.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi has stated that two of the Opposition leaders involved in the Sulu plot were from Peninsular Malaysia and another from Sabah.

Darell, who said at a ceramah on Friday that he could be one of those accused of plotting the Sulu incursion, said Saturday that the authorities kept changing the story regarding the Sulu incursion.

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) will develop a variant of the Surion transport helicopter for the South Korean marines.

GREG WALDRON SINGAPORE 18 APR 2013

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration " has selected KAI as a primary negotiator for the development of the amphibious task helicopter system " , the South Korean company said in a statement.

In an email to Flightglobal, KAI says the marines will obtain " about 40 " of the amphibious assault variant.

KAI says the development programme is worth South Korean won (W) 800 billion ($713 million) and will enhance the marines' ability to transport troops and equipment in the littoral environment. It expects to commence development of the variant in July, and complete it by the end of 2015. Production of the variant will then commence.

Key modifications will include an integrated flotation system, an auxiliary fuel tank and specialised radio equipment. KAI will also obtain type certification for the new variant.

The aircraft will likely operate from the South Korean Navy's Dokdo class assault ships, which can carry up to 15 helicopters. Seoul has received two Dokdo class ships and plans to have an eventual fleet of four.

The marines currently uses Sikorsky UH-60 helicopters in the assault role.

Since the launch of the programme in 2006, the South Korean army and police have ordered approximately 100 Surions, with plans to order up to 200.

Missile misses target again and again
By Hemant Kumar Rout | ENS - BALASORE
25th April 2013

In a joint exercise by Indian Air Force (IAF) and DRDO, a Russian short range surface-to-air missile was test fired from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The OSA-AK missile reportedly failed to hit a tow body suspended from a pilot less target aircraft (PTA) as it fell down before reaching the target.

Sources said air force personnel conducted the test, a part of target simulation exercise in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on sea during noon.

The missile was fired from the launching complex - III and the PTA was flown from the launching -II of the ITR.

While three rounds of the missile were fired at 11.25 am, 11.45 am and 12.45 pm, the missile was to hit the tow body during the third attempt.

“The missile fell down immediately after take off. Though in initial two attempts the 10-km range missile travelled a certain distance, but during the target simulation exercise it failed to reach the target,” said a source.

It was the third attempt in last three days which also proved futile.

While on Monday the pilot less target aircraft fell down before releasing the tow body and flying for a stipulated period due to technical snags, a similar attempt on Tuesday also failed as the missile could not be fired.

A defence official said the aim and objective of the exercise was to gauge the effectiveness of the missile and killing capabilities mid air.

The Russia-manufactured missile has already been procured by India for the IAF fighter air-crafts.

OSA-AK missile has been developed to be used against aircrafts, surface-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles.

The missile has already been inducted in the army and it was first user trial by the IAF.

Sources added that if all the preparations go according to the plan, another exercise will be conducted within a day or two.

Thereafter, the missile would be fired from the fighter air crafts targeting the PTA.
