Meet the missile that wipes out everything electronic

user posted image

Ever wonder what it would be like to go without electricity, apart from the odd five-minute power cut? Ask Boeing — the firm is working on a missile that could completely wipe out all of your electronics.

The Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) is an effort to build a missile that flies over -- not into -- a target, be it an entire military base, neighborhood, or a even a lone tank and shuts down all the electronics inside without harming a soul. (Think of it almost as a mini-EMP in a rocket.) On Oct. 16, a CHAMP missile flew an hour-long preprogrammed route low over the Utah desert, "degrading and defeating" the electronics inside seven different targets. In a building along the route packed with computers, the screens all went dark as CHAMP sailed by, emitting a blast of high-power microwaves, according to CHAMP-maker Boeing's Oct. 22 press release announcing the test flight. (The weapon even took out the remotely controlled TV cameras that were monitoring the tests, claimed Boeing.)

As the Chicago-based defense giant says in its press release, "CHAMP, which renders electronic targets useless, is a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that use the energy of motion to defeat a target." (Side note: "energy of motion" is a nice way of saying that missiles, bombs, and bullets slam into things and explode.)

So, how does CHAMP fit into the Pentagon's post Iraq and Afghan war plans? As everyone knows, the Defense Department is focusing on how to defeat new generations of air defense radars, surface to air missiles, anti ship missiles, and a host of other technologies that are specifically meant to keep American weapons systems at bay.

This means coming up with a fleet of new stealth bombers, fighters, and drone jets that can penetrate these defenses. It also means creating a bevy of long-range -- or standoff weapons -- capable of being launched by unstealthy jets far away from heavily defended targets. Where does something like CHAMP come in? As a door kicker. Launched from a stealth aircraft and designed to take out enemy air defense networks and command and control centers, CHAMP would pave the way for less stealthy jets and help to "blind" the enemy.

"In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy's electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive," said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager at Boeing's Phantom Works division, in a press release.

Still, don't expect to see CHAMP fielded soon. It's simply meant to demonstrate that such a weapon is feasible. In the meantime, the Pentagon is buying EA-18G Growler electronic attack jets for the Navy while the Air Force and Marine Corps hope to use something called the Next Generation Jammer along with powerful Active Electronically Scanned Array radars (AESA radars can be used to jam other radars, in addition to many other things) on their F-35 Joint Strike Fighters to defeat enemy sensors. And don't be surprised if the Navy decides to equip its planned fleet of stealthy combat drones, known as UCLASS, with some sort of electronic warfare gear aimed at jamming enemy electronics.

Breaking News - Pakistan's Pervez Musharraf: Court orders ex-ruler's arrest

A Pakistani court has ordered the arrest of Pakistan's ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf over moves to impose house arrest on judges in March 2007.

Mr Musharraf was present at the Islamabad High Court when the judges issued the order. He had been seeking to extend bail in the case. Police present at the court did not arrest him when the order was made. The former general immediately left the court and drove away escorted by his security detail.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says that despite an unwritten judicial convention discouraging police arrests on court premises, suspects are normally handcuffed in court.

Mr Musharraf can file an appeal against this court order in Pakistan's Supreme Court.

Political woes

He returned from years of self-imposed exile last month hoping to lead his All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party into the general election next month.

But earlier this week his candidacy was rejected in Chitral, one of four seats he had applied to contest. He had already failed in an attempt to stand in three other seats. His legal team plan to appeal against that decision.

He is embroiled in a series of legal battles and has been attempting to stave off arrest ever since he returned, as well as an attempt to try him for treason. The Pakistani Taliban have also vowed to assassinate the former president, who seized power in a 1999 coup.

He is facing a number of charges related to his time in office with court proceedings over the killing of Benazir Bhutto in 2007 and a tribal leader from Balochistan.

He has described all the cases against him as "baseless" and politically motivated.

This is the first arrest warrant issued for the former ruler since his return to Pakistan. Mr Musharraf has already been barred by a court from leaving the country.

Many analysts believe that the authorities would not welcome his arrest at such a politically sensitive time.

Our correspondent points out that Pakistan's powerful military, of which he was the head until 2007, has not intervened to prevent his political fall.

But while his future appears increasingly bleak, few believe the military would allow a former chief to be thrown in jail or assassinated by militants, he adds.

Unconfirmed reports suggest he could still be arrested and detained at his property close to Islamabad, where he went after leaving court.

MMEA To Build 12 More Bases

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) plans to beef up its firepower capacities by having at least 12 more bases nationwide to shorten response time from two hours to one hour.

Its deputy director-general (operations), Maritime Admiral Datuk Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar the MMEA aspired to have 30 bases throughout the country from 18 at present.

“We would like to have a base or a post at every 60 nautical miles along the coastline to enable us to swing into action quickly upon receiving information,” he told.

Ahmad Fuzi said the additional bases, which were earmarked for islands off the mainland like Pulau Jarak, Perak, would be equipped with a 24-hour operations room, to receive information on crimes at sea.

The MMEA also has 12 radars equipped with cameras, nine of them along in the west coast of the peninsula and three more in the east coast of Sabah, to track the movement of vessels involved in criminal activities, especially smuggling in Malaysian waters, he added.

“For example, we detected suspected criminals attempting to board a ship from a boat at Tanjung Piai, Johor at 0150H last year via a radar equipped with cameras,” he said.

Ahmad Fuzi said the MMEA also capitalised on two mobile radars in hot spot areas that did not have radars with cameras like the coastline of Penang and Perak.

The mobile radars track down speeding boats through a sound detection system without the use of visual recording.

These mobile radars were beleived to be developed by AMCOP in collaboration with Puncak Teknologi (M) Sdn Bhd . aThe multi-sensors Mobile Radar System comprises of Slotted-Waveguide X-band Radar system, Coastal Surveillance System software, Long Range Surveillance Camera, Control Center cabin, Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and Telescopic Tower.

Mobile Surveillance Unit or MSU is a state-of-the-art marine mobile surveillance system that consists of marine radar, surveillance camera, satellite communication system, 100 ft telescopic antenna mast, control cabin, self-contain power generating system and other support facilities.

MSU is designed to cater for all tropical weather conditions and can be deployed anytime and anywhere along the coastal area. Its modular design makes it easy to be transported by land, sea and air.

Essentially, the MSU is fitted with 12-ft Selesmar radar system and Obzerv ARGC-2400 day and night long range laser based surveillance camera system. The radar system can detect small boats up to 10 nautical miles whilst the surveillance camera can detect small boats up to 12 km range.

USS Freedom arrives in Singapore as part of US 'pivot'
By Mariko Oi BBC News, Singapore

A US Navy ship has arrived in Singapore as part of US plans to increase its military presence in the region. The USS Freedom will be stationed in South East Asia for 10 months. It joins the US 7th Fleet, which is responsible for more than 48 million sq miles (124 million sq km) in the Pacific.

By 2020, 60% of the US Navy's assets will be deployed to the Asia-Pacific as its forces leave Iraq and Afghanistan. China views the move with concern.

"It is the much talked about 'pivot' or rebalancing of the US policy towards Asia," said Nicholas Fang, executive director of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs.

"The US wants to maintain a stable open sea trade lane which is important for global trade and the US economy but it also shows that it is committed to the stability of the region."
'Existing relationship'

According to the US Navy, the US 7th Fleet's area of responsibility covers 35 maritime countries including those involved in the current crisis on the Korean peninsula such as China, and North and South Korea. The fleet's home port is in Yokosuka, Japan.

Sitting at the Changi naval base in the east of Singapore, the USS Freedom looks enormous but it is in fact one of the smallest combat ships the US has.

user posted image

"It is the first ship of its kind," said Rear Adm Thomas Carney, commander of the US Navy's Logistics Group Western Pacific.

The USS Freedom is known as a littoral combat ship, designed to operate in shallow water close to shore. It also requires a much smaller crew of fewer than 100 which allows the Navy to cut costs.

"Its capabilities are very closely matched to many of the other navies in the region, and deploying it out here to South East Asia gives us the opportunity to test what it can and cannot do," Rear Adm Carney said.

During its deployment, it will participate in joint military exercises with most South East Asian nations, which tend to operate on a much smaller scale.

The USS Freedom is one of four littoral combat ships which Singapore has agreed to host on a rotational basis.

'Pockets of unrest'

Its arrival in Singapore coincides with escalating tensions in the region and continuing threats from North Korea, although it is unlikely the vessel will be deployed to the Korean Peninsula in the near future.

According to Mr Fang, many countries in the region will find the US military presence reassuring.

"Threats from North Korea are not new but we have seen other little pockets of unrest such as the situation in Sabah, Malaysia, which had cross-border tensions with the Philippines," he notes.

But one country which has repeatedly expressed its objections over America's military "pivot" to Asia is China.

In its defence white paper released on Tuesday, China accused the US of destabilising the region by strengthening its military alliances.

"There are some countries which are strengthening their Asia-Pacific military alliances, expanding their military presence in the region and frequently making the situation there more tense," the report said, referring to the US.

Military spokesman Yang Yujun told reporters that such moves "do not accord with the developments of the times and are not conducive towards maintaining regional peace and stability".

During Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent visit to Russia, China also agreed to buy 24 fighter jets and four submarines in what was reportedly its first large-scale military purchase from Russia in a decade.

The state-run China Daily described the visit as China's own "pivot" to Moscow.

"China's views are very clear and they see the US involvement in the region as not in their interest," says Mr Fang.

user posted image

"But what the USS Freedom is suited for - closer operations with smaller navies in the region - signals that it is not necessarily a force for offensive action or intimidation but it is a force for collaboration and co-operation."

"It can also be interpreted as a way to co-operate more with its allies and build a more balancing effect vis-a-vis China," he added.

While the US cuts military spending, China has become the world's second largest spender. Its defence budget has increased 175% since 2003 according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

KMW signs Qatar MBT and artillery deal
By Claire Apthorp | 18 April 2013 Thursday | 14:40

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) has announced that it has signed a contract with the Emirate of Qatar to supply the PzH 2000 artillery system and Leopard 2 main battle tank (MBT). The contract forms an important aspect of the nation’s ongoing efforts to modernise its land forces.

The contract, with a total value of €1.89 billion, will see KMW deliver 24 PzH 2000 artillery systems and 62 Leopard 2 MBTs. The agreement also includes the delivery of peripheral equipment, training installations and additional services.

Qatar’s land forces currently operate an ageing fleet of tanks and artillery that is in parts more than 40 years old. The systems delivered to Qatar by KMW will progressively replace the country’s outdated artillery and tanks of French and South African origin, which will be scrapped. These are likely to include the armed forces' AMX-30 MBT and Mk F3 self-propelled guns, as well as 12 G-5 towed howitzers.

KMW is also understood to be pursuing a similar deal with Saudi Arabia, with the potential export of the Leopard 2 MBT and Boxer armed fighting vehicle. The German government has been hesitant to grant export approval to the kingdom, but the announcement of the Qatari deal may mark a change in outlook as times continue to be tough for European defence manufacturers.

If the Saudi deal goes through it will, along with the Qatari order announced today, mark a shift in the company’s export focus toward the Middle East market as it seeks new business outside its traditional European-North American customer base.

Latest Press Release from BAE System - Thursday 18 April 2013

Fixed-Wing Aviators set sights on Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System

user posted image

NASHUA, New Hampshire — BAE Systems’ Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS™) rocket recently launched and engaged targets from a U.S. Air Force A-10 jet, marking another milestone for the laser-guided rocket system. This expanded capability gives pilots of fast-moving jet aircraft a precision-guided stand-off system that has proven to be the low-collateral-damage weapon of choice for Marine Corps helicopter pilots in Afghanistan.

“These latest test results underscore the power and versatility of the APKWS technology and provide further proof that the system can be launched off of any platform capable of shooting an unguided 2.75-inch rocket,” said David Harrold, director of precision guidance solutions at BAE Systems. “Since its introduction on Marine Corps helicopters in combat operations, the APKWS rocket has proven its ability to defeat a broad range of targets. This test is an important step in bringing that same capability to fixed-wing aviators.”

user posted image

During the recent tests at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, two APKWS rockets were fired from an Air Force A-10 Warthog at altitudes of approximately 10,000 and 15,000 feet, at airspeeds up to 348 knots. The first controlled test-vehicle shot performed a series of pre-planned maneuvers to collect in-flight data. The second shot, into a 70-knot headwind, hit the target board well within the required 2 meters of the laser spot. The shot was laser-designated from the ground with a special operations forces marker. These shots are the first in a series planned under a Joint Capabilities Technology Demonstration program with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps. The A-10 is the first Air Force platform to conduct testing of the fixed-wing variant of the APKWS weapon. The U.S. Marine Corps recently conducted similar tests off the AV-8B Harrier aircraft.

user posted image

At one-third the cost and one-third the weight of other precision weapons in inventory, the APKWS rocket is an ideal precision weapon for today’s fiscal environment, reducing the direct cost of target engagement and the total operational cost of each sortie. To date, the APKWS rocket has been qualified on the AH-1W and UH-1Y helicopters, demonstrated on the Bell 407GT, and has been flown off the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior, the Beechcraft AT-6B — and now, the A-10. It is expected to be similarly qualified for use on several other rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft including the AH-64D/E Apache, the armed MH-60R/S, AH-6, AV-8B, F-16, and F/A-18.

BAE Systems is prime contractor for the APKWS rocket, the only U.S. program of record delivering precision guidance for 2.75-inch rockets.

Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD concludes

Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 2013 was conducted on the South China Sea, Singapore and the Malaysian Peninsula between 8-18 April.

Australia was the only nation to deploy a submarine in support of Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 13.

Commanding Officer of HMAS Dechaineux Commander Glen Miles said operating as the enemy or “Red Force”, HMAS Dechaineux’s role in the exercise was to test the responses from participating nations’ navy vessels.

“We operated in shallow waters amongst high concentrations of fishing vessels conducting simulated attacks on surface ships from Malaysian, Singaporean and New Zealand Navies,” Commander Miles said.

“For the crew of HMAS Dechaineux, Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD 13 provided a fantastic opportunity to practice the ‘hide and seek’ of submarine warfare in busy waterways.”

Throughout the exercise the submarine was “hunted” by two AP-3C Orion aircraft from Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) 92 Wing, based at RAAF Edinburgh in South Australia.

The AP-3C Orion aircraft flew a total of seven sorties in support of the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA)-led exercise, allowing the AP-3C crews to hone their skills in a complex multinational exercise environment involving naval and air forces.

The Five Power Defence Arrangements is the longest standing multilateral arrangement in South East Asia and has maintained relevance in the contemporary security environment.

The Australian Defence Force was a founding member of the Five Power Defence Arrangements and this year marks the 42nd anniversary of our involvement in these exercises.
Exercises such as BERSAMA SHIELD 2013 continue to reinforce the relevance of this long-term relationship to the regional strategic environment.

92 Wing Exercise Detachment Commander Squadron Leader Jesse Laroche said “Exercise BERSAMA SHIELD further enhances the strength of the FPDA relationship, the aircraft and support personnel operated from Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Butterworth.

“The squadron regarded the AP-3C participation as a great success, testing exercise interoperability, capability expansion and communication between the Five Power Defence Arrangements Nations,” Squadron Leader Laroche said.

In addition to the AP-3C Orions and HMAS Dechaineux, the Royal Australian Navy and Royal Australian Air Force provided liaison officers who deployed to Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Butterworth.

Bagus kalau cam tu. Sebab frigate kita dah boleh buat sendiri. Kalau buat banyak skt, kita boleh jual, dan gunakan hasil jualan untuk beli lebih banyak benda lain, spt kapal selam dan heli gunship dsb.

Lepas tu kita fit destroyer tu dgn 3M-Moskit anti-ship cruise missile (NATO designation: SS-N-22-Sunburn) buatan Russia. Hah! Tu dia! Dah ada yang tu, bawak mari kapal perang mana yang nak cari pasal. Bring 'em on. Kita tebuk dia sampai bocor habis. Kita goreng dia sampai rangup hangus. Yay!
