cause you asked...

do it either way you like... just make sure you don't face plant on the ground while trying to do a free willie... road rash on little brother might be darn awful and seriously hard to explain to friends without them laughing their balls off and feeling sorry for you at the same time...

hi, i have a problem...you know..slamming that stem..however when i removed the last part of the spacers, i'm left with a gap, there is no covers..what i need is perhaps the zero stack headset? i went to shop but they ask for the diameter size, bearing and stuffs...

how to know the size ler?? help me...
you need a upper cup to replace your the big conical shaped spacer as that was designed to be like that.. most likely FSA made a similar model with a lower stack height...

they can take out the for and measure the steerer to find the correct headset size...but looking from the merida site.. FSA BB410 headset seems to point to a 1 1/8" semi integrated headset... that should be enough for them to get your one...

yeap..you are right...zero stack is the way to go if you want that slammed look...

i think ritchey and cane creek has a lot of ZS headsets....

FSA ZS Headsets

Ritchey Road Headsets

CK explanation is a bit too much of details. it's good but somehow I got lost somewhere in the middle of the article tongue.gif

I was planning to buy and fix it myself, but I need to chop that extra steerer off. Hence I better bring my bike over to the bike shop, WHICH i really would like to avoid. Apart from having to bring my bike with a cab (i got no cars here), the servicing charge is damn expensive. around 300 for full service..blergh..

I resort to be my own mechanic though...haha. I would like to change the cassette on my own, is it difficult? any guidance? I know there's a tool and I can buy that, but the steps to replace the cassette I hv no idea..
*
the headset can be changed manually without tools with some risk... you need a flathead screwdriver to get the bearing seat out of the steerer and the cups out of the headtube...

a mallot and a bit of dexterity should get the new cups and seat in... i said risk in your case being having a carbon headtube and risk whacking onto the wrong place when getting the cups out...

the cassette needs a tool which is not cheap and an old chain to unlock the cassette lock ring...u might as well pay for the service charges...

to remove the cassette u only need a chainwhip, lockring tool and a spanner. i assume u already have a spanner. chainwhip and lockring tool may cost you rm1xx only, parktool brand. if u get icetoolz, or other brands, might be cheaper.

damn this looks freaking easy man...I can do this myself..not a probs. Just get the tool..i think around 125 here.

Anyway, apart from the cassette, I know I need to take off a few chain links as the one I use currently is quite long to suit the 32T. my previous lbs mentioned the chain has this 'magic link' or something..do i need a special tool to remove some of the chains or i can do it by hand? thx guys..

need quick reply here as I'm off to shop to buy the stuffs (im determined to become a self mechanic at home)  flex.gif
*
no one says it's hard... jus no point getting the tools for a one time thing when the bike shop can do it...

the sram powerlinks can be disconnected with a needle nose plier... to hook it back up.. jus align the plates and put force on the crank in the direction of a normal pedal stroke and the pins will slot back in...

cutting chain is inevitably a job for a chain breaker... no escape...

QUOTE(mrjgx @ Dec 3 2012, 02:08 PM)
im using a sram chain...so how? can use normal plier is it?

OTH this looks damn complicated and I don't have the proper tools  sad.gif

*
old days where got so much tools... jus flat head screwdriver, rubber mallet, wood wedge and a steel tube larger than your steerer tube to bang in the bearing seats and cups...

of course if you sayang your carbon frame... then you have to spend it on the cup presses and stuff lar...

QUOTE(ryan3721 @ Dec 3 2012, 02:08 PM)

missing link' or 'powerlink' connectors are just a quick way for removal of the 'entire' chain... correct me if wrong  tongue.gif
*
spot on...

QUOTE(miaopurr @ Dec 3 2012, 02:09 PM)
eh, but u still want to remove some links. so u need the chain tool. after that, if u have a missing link or powerlink, u just use ur hands
ur hands so powderful?? i am never shaking hands with you ever...

QUOTE(mrjgx @ Dec 3 2012, 02:11 PM)
yeah I guess so, a chain tool. Is it the one usually comes with the multitool? I have one i usually bring but it's without the chain tool..sigh not complete. haha thx guys
*
multi tools chain breakers are lousy... they are jus for road side fixes and usually harder to use due to the size...and as you fiddle with the tiny chain breaker... you risk bending and breaking the push rod that pushes the pin out if you masuk the wrong angle...

it'll work... but as the pins shrinks smaller... the little piece also grows smaller and also easier to break.. and if it breaks... your multi tool will be not so multi anymore...

like that.. you need to go bike shop work a couple of months first...

the park tools is the least of your worries financially... when you start needing a snapon tool storage cab...

if it is that good.. you would have seen them all around...

if he is on a tight budget with next to no expectations.. it is something you can't stop him from doing...

else, just do your best to lay him out the possibilities of his choice and let him decide for himself.. if he still proceeds forward with what you see as a dead end... so be it and god bless..
