Recently, my alternator seems charging weakly, so decided to pay them a visit. Quite inconspicuous but luckily Waze location shared by Maudermunty above is accurate
Initially tech there (chubby guy) diagnosed it as battery defect (new battery, less than 2mth). Ask me to claim a new battery from my dealer. But I insisted that he service my alternator for it has been untouched for 17yrs/350k km. He agreed and began work to unmount/disassemble my unit. Turn out true to my suspicion that the carbon brushes were worn. Even the bearing is broken upon inspection. So he did the needful and voila... my car is happy again. Work performed; 1. 2x carbon brush 2. 1x NTN japan bearing 3. Cleaning of parts/housing 4. Bench testing Total charges RM90 Will monitor further if got any complication. But initial feel and test at home is the alternator has been rejuvenated. Voltage measurement when engine bay is hot When car was quite new 14.3v Before servicing 13.9v After servicing 14.2v |

IMHO. Been to this shop to fix alternator. They asked me to leave the alternator there so they can 'slowly fix it', but I refuse as mine is original toyota/denso.
Waited there (~30minutes) as I didn't want anything done/taken without consent. Watched them fix it. Makes me wonder why they ask me to leave it there and come back after a few hours.... The price of their Panasonic car batteries are slightly higher (maybe RM30-50 higher than a spare part shop) and you can't take back your old battery (you can sell your old battery for some money). Their testing of alternator is only limited to voltage (no current check). Overall, they can perform the job. |

They asked me to leave the alternator there so they can 'slowly fix it', but I refuse as mine is original toyota/denso. These people are all car WIREMEN. Not many around town,Waited there (~30minutes) as I didn't want anything done/taken without consent. Overall, they can perform the job. compared to mechanics. This wireman in Pudu, near Pudu Plaza area, whom I used to go to from the 80s to 90s, has the entire machine whereby they mount your alternator onto it, spins it and reads the output current on an old fashioned meter. Very old machine really, probably dating back from the 50s to 60s. In the mid-80s, I bought a used altenator from the breaker yard shop in Cheras, Soon Loi, for 60. Nippondenso, Japanese made in those days. He installed it for $15. I'm not sure whether he is still around there, or even still alive, but if he is, would like to look for him again. There wer two or three wiremen in that area. One was located in the squatter houses right opposite Pudu Plaza. If the guy is free, changing the bushes is actually a half hour job. |
