wow bro

i really like the new Satellite design by Toshiba
totally make my R830 Portege replacement candidate list
*
yeah, its nice to see Toshiba putting in some effort to design less outdated machines lately laugh.gif

But do take note that the Toshiba U series ultrabooks have pretty shallow keyboard keys, so you might wanna check them out and see whether they are okay for you or not 1st before you buy. Especially so if you type a lot on your laptop nod.gif

Hi all, looking for a new laptop for my friend,

1. Preferred Brand - Any will do, as long as not an Acer
2. Budget - below 2k
3. Usage - gaming, movies, the usual stuff
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14" and above

The laptop itself must be in Turquoise color.
Thanks.

I dunno how to recommend laptops based on color, and toequoise is no common color yo.... sorry laugh.gif

btw, i think lenovo y480 phase out already. missed it cry.gif

Phase out doesn't mean they are no longer in stores bro brows.gif
Still, if you can wait, do wait for the upcoming Y400 and Y500 series, they seemed to be pretty promising in terms of specs and price icon_rolleyes.gif

Hurm...the portege r830 is recently updated to Windows 8 and sometimes i wish for touchscreen,
Is there any news from Toshiba about this update for its Portege or Satellite series?

the keyboard can be a issue as well because i dislike Macbook because its hard to type faster.

In my opinion, touchscreens on normal laptops (those that cannot twist or detach) is pretty ridiculous... all you are going to get is a very wobbly monitor at the end of the day laugh.gif
There is a W8 device with touchscreen by Toshiba. Its called a Toshiba Satellite U920T iirc... seen one in Singapore, not impressed laugh.gif
If you really want a portable and good touchscreen device on the go, I would suggest you to go for the Samsung ATIV Smart PC (Pro version@RM3599) brows.gif

** I thought Macs are always faster for typing since they have much better keyboards and also trackpads? laugh.gif If you don't mind considering other brands, can consider Lenovo as well since they are well known for their ergonomic keyboard designs

Huhuhu i guess i have to either opt for normal laptop or wait for more wave of touchscreen+detach-able
laptop
samsung ativ pro smart version is always considered but i hate the design in the back of the screen, seem to bulgy

** It goes backfire on me,well i already used to thick covered membrane keyboard which is much more deflective than normal membrane keyboard but not so much responsive as mechanical. If you have type within Portege series, you will find it flat but with the keyboard lift up higher than usual making it much more or less like a semi mechanical

If long battery life is a must (although different people have different definition of "long" batter life laugh.gif)

yes there's many different definition for the word "long", but at least u understood what I really mean laugh.gif
Let's say, her budget would only limited to 1.3k max, no more no less. blush.gif
There's no laptop under that budget have more battery life >4 hour is it? hmm.gif
I also considering for her these laptop too;

Acer V5-431-887B2G50 B887 ~ RM1299 (3~4hour)
Acer E1-471-32322G50L i3 ~ RM1299 (battery life only 2~2.5hour)

Lenovo 59-351025 Pentium B950 ~ RM1,170 (hope some seller still have this model)(3~4hour)
Lenovo G470 – 14” / B820 / 2GBRAM / 320GB / DOS: RM1010/-(3~4hour)

screen size - cx70, 17"
screen resolution - y580, FHD
screen matte - cx70
keyboard - cx70 (my personal preference, it's strange to say other laptop have better keyboard than Lenovo on budget line smile.gif
touchpad - draw (personal opinion). cx70 button is stiff, y580 - hard to click and drag due to design.
speaker / sound - draw (personal opinion). y580 has JBL, but you have to listen to cx70 to believe the quality (it max volume is louder than y580. while still staying crisp and clear). But you always better off getting a proper desktop speakers system.
CPU - Y580
GPU - Y580 by miles
Heat - draw, both are hot under load. But I heard (no personal experience) cx70 could under-throttle under load (not good for gaming).

For gaming, Y580. I just get a matte screen protector to reduce the glare.

Unfortunately power doesn't come along well with portability and price...
Either its a powerful and heavy and not-too-expensive laptop; or a lighter but less powerful and not-too-expensive laptop for you  laugh.gif

Haha. Ok. I get what u mean. What's your personal opinion bout the y580 then? Do u recommend it? And btw i saw you saying bout the y500. Whats the difference between the 580 and 500? Sorry for asking so many questions. tongue.gif

My opinion on the Y580? Its the best budget gaming laptop at the moment nod.gif
At least until the Y500 with an additional ultrabay GPU is out and benchmarked brows.gif

The new Y400 and Y500 series laptops are basically normal laptops, apart from being good-looking, they feature something called an "ultrabay" (a tray-like thingy that lets you put in an optical drive/ heat sink/ additional GPU brows.gif etc.) These bays are usually only available in business-class notebooks before this.
Although the new Y500 series were speculated not to come with a GTX level GPU like the Y580 does. The combined performance of 2 GPUs will most probably be better than the Y580. But still, its too early to tell tongue.gif

Hi sifu.
Me again. I had done some survey, at the end decided to save a bit on budget and get cheaper laptop. Extra budget get a SSD and extend warranty. These are my considerations at this moment.

1. Pavilion G4-2111TX, i7-3612QM + AMD HD7670M@RM2499[2.19kg], 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W7HP
2. [Ultrabook]K46CM-WX090H, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT635M@RM2199[2kg], 2GB, 500GB, W8, OD
3. A45VS-VX026H, i5-3210M + Nvidia GT640M@RM2199[2.4kg], 2GB, 1TB, W8

Among these three, which one is better in gaming experience? I know the warranty for ASUS is 2 years, how about HP? How much If I want to extend warranty?

One more thing, yesterday I went to some shop, there got a new model, ASUS a43 also, i5 but come with GT645. price at 2099, is it better than above 3?

Many thanks.
