The one quoted from Italy is the most used.

Londinium from UK. ECM Technika from Germany. Many more from Singapore. China OEM can try Taobao and the likes.

BZ13 I think there's a JB/SG shop selling.

Found a small time roaster at a local wet market doing only Indo and local beans...unfortunately he ran out of Indo stuff. May go back next week to check it out, RM 28 per Kg laugh.gif Hahaha

Meanwhile finished a bag of espresso blend from antipodean, very low acidity, surprising good for latte.

Started a bag of Costa Rica from kfchan, OK for espresso, I didn't like it for latte/flat white...too mild for my taste...changed to drinking cortado for now...

Thank god i checked with this thread before throwing money down the drain. I also wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a genuine one and a knock off one anyway. The thing that mislead me was that they showed the original price of 153. But just out of curiousity, how bad was it? The aeropress seems to have a simple enough mechanism that isn't hard to get right.

So which store sells aeropress that you guys can vouch for as genuine? I have already tried checking the aeropress site and they only list one store in kl as a recognized dealer. Cuppa is online only and kfchan is a tad too far for me. I would prefer to be able to walk in and inspect the product before buying it. So any stores in PJ that sells genuine aeropress? Coffee ritual would have been perfect if it wasn't sold out sad.gif
*
Some coffee shops sell them too.

I think I saw some at Artisan Coffee at PJ section 13...

I have sinned...

Started a bag of supermarket coffee...expiry Jan 17...I'm estimating 10 months stale...

I couldn't help myself, the bright orange packaging was too enticing laugh.gif It called for me... I just have to buy it. RM33 per 500g bag.

No crema as expected...but surprisingly flavorful nutty and rich coco, good for latte. Will continue to fine tune tomorrow. Most likely to sample the rest of their range biggrin.gif

Good value for money stuff these for latte. Hahaha

I buy my beans from KF and from time to time, I will drop by his cafe. Not sure about bad support, but so far he has always been very helpful with his insights and never hesitate to share experiences and knowledge. Like Danny and Keng Zhi, they too likes to share.. maybe face to face would be better lol.
*
KF's Quartro Blend is very nice. We like it a lot. Getting a fresh enough batch is hit and miss. Most of the time is 2 to 3 weeks old. Maybe my luck and timing not good...

If u r looking for cheap beans, do u know about antipodean merdeka bean? Indonesian arabica bean. Rm25 per 250g & can get a free drink, latte, cappuccino, french press...
I will get a beg from them everytime im in KL 😉
*
Thanks. I agree their espresso blend is quite nice too.

Their coffee at the shop not so good IMHO. A bit too much fines from using a flat burr espresso grinder for the job. I usually just skip the free coffee.

I'm not looking for cheap beans per se. Just exploring and experimenting. There's a Chow Kit roaster I think RM 28 per Kg Indo Arabica I will try soon enough biggrin.gif Now that is cheap...Hahaha

I dunno his name or shop name. It's a typical tiny grocery type no name shop in a corner inside the Chow Kit wet market.

Thanks for the reply, will check them out smile.gif
Currently I'm getting illy from Classic Coffee and Beverage Malaysia (purchasing 3-4 canisters x3kg each time). Probably will switch to someone who can deliver in smaller batches, nothing worse than stale beans. I'm still far from the level where i can roast my own coffee, doubt i'll ever get there  sweat.gif
*
3 kg = 12 cans...so about 1 can every 2 days.

Funny thing about illy beans they get "stale" 2-3 days after opening. Also they are predominantly chocolate and coco heavy. So it is actually not too bad in your case biggrin.gif

But fresh (5-10 days post roast) is still best.

http://www.ikawacoffee.com/about/

Illy coffee not cheap right? 250g how much?

Buy enough to finish them in 2 weeks. I consume like 750g a week, can easily order on a weekly basis and get them to give u a discount for a year long subscription just have to email them and see you can work out a deal

Different blend peak at different time, also last for different time.

Klatch told me their WBC generally peak on the 7th day.

Anyway general rule of 15 always come to play. Can finish 750gm in a week can afford it to get it ship from
Neighboring countries if they can get u in say 3-7 days.
http://coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/questions/573959
*
Correct. So my general rule of thumb 5-10 days is ok. Peak on the 7th day means it starts going down hill from there biggrin.gif

Since we can't finish everything on that day, better we try to catch it a few days before and a few days after.

Been looking for a good cafe that serves good espressos around the east of Malaysia...

I have failed so far to identify one...

I am working in one cafe as a barista but the equipment provided are not enough for me to pull a great shot that satisfy me...

is there any cafe utilizing a slayer machine around Malaysia?

I would like to try a shot pulled by a slayer ala slayer style  lust.gif
*
I only know who sells them Slayer...I dunno who uses them. Even if you can find them, who's to say their coffee is any good? And how good are you to know the difference? smile.gif

RM395 for 3kg
If we buy in 250g cannisters it will be very expensive.

Wow!!! Really really big cans. No wonder you're having problems.

I try to buy from different shops and buy on different days so that I coincide and consume the beans within their optimum time. most of the time fail.. Hahaha

Occasionally I experiment with supermarket beans biggrin.gif

I am using the same grinder in the shop.

How is the shot? too fast? too slow? bitter? sour?

But for my upper burr I am using it on setting 4. 6 is maybe too coarse for the coffee beans you are using. Try changing it to 5 first and then further down for a finer grind.

I used to go all the way down to 1 too when it was on the default setting 5 with the older beans.
*
Manufacturing tolerances means my #5 can be your #8. No right no wrong...

For proper set up, ignore taste, get it to choke first, then back off to set time and volume...then minor adjustments and dose to set tastes.

PS this grinder is great for coffee, not so good for espresso.

Slayer plus a commercial grade grinder for decaf and regular would run you around RM55k today.

Reach out to them to get a price

That's about right. Was at their office, they also have the speedster and a few others.

haha, dialed in different blends from all over the town (KK) to know enough I guess... but I hope that I can be exposed to more types of SOs and blends from all over the world.
But the coffee scene here just started so maybe I'll visit more cafes when I get back to the West this coming month end or maybe when I have the chance to go out and drink more  thumbup.gif

*
Just a warning....my observations are most shops in KL and PJ are using somewhat stale beans, and the so called barista is not very good.

Also most of the beans used are cheap medium dark blends, for the "strong" coffee preferred by "dumb" locals not exposed to gourmet coffee.

Go to US, Australia, Europe and you will cry when you come back to the local cafe scene. My two favorite beans...an Ethiopian that is literally spicy hot of cinnamon and black pepper, and a light medium Costa Rica natural that is pungent and aromatic with an after taste that lingers for half a day. Only then you'll know...

lucky my palette not that good to taste between day 4 vs day 11.

much like yourself I try to finish my beans within a reasonable time.
it great U can keep to such tight rules.
Optimal time is what? Peak of day 7, day 6 and day 8 how? For ppl who can consume a lot like JCogent not hard to clear in 7 days just really depends when coffee gets roasted and how it it takes to get you. If one is buying from U.K., 7 days gone by! Some buy from China when it gets here over 2 weeks flew by. Even can finish in 5 days means little

most ppl are not able to discriminate between 5 day old vs 10mths old when they drinking their fav frap. which is why biz for these chains are good or GREAT.
*
Very easy to keep to the "rules"... biggrin.gif

Many times to the shops, if they are too old, I walk out empty handed. Friends in SG works in cafe they hand carry back fresh. Know the local roasting schedules. Stop drinking...did this a few times when the stars didn't line up. Couldn't sleep thinking when/where to get the next fix....Hahaha....

Crema
Beans for espresso is best between 1week to 3 weeks old. Below 5 days, you will get lots of crema but dissipates very quickly in the cup (I call it immature crema). Too old, you get 0 crema ha-ha. How many ml/g do you get with 25sec? Just to see if the grinder is grinding fine enough for you
*
He has a pressurized filter...ml/g and 25s doesn't mean much...

Needs portafilter mod...and manual tamp...to maximize it...but to start...needs digital scale for 14-16 g "fresh" beans for a double.

For espresso you don't want anything more than 10 days if possible. For latte you have a bit more leeway...
