QUOTE(act one @ Sep 7 2015, 11:16 PM) There's just too many bad things to say about department store shelf coffees 1. Mass production. This means they roast according to their own schedule and never in small batches. In that sense, they will probably roast enough to fill up the stores for 1-2mths 2. Freshness Back to point 1, thus by the time the coffee travels to each store and needs to be stocked up enough to be displayed, when it gets into your hands, it's already way way past the optimum brewing date (2 weeks after roast) 3. Quality (this 1 may actually be put for argument as some is better than others) This includes bad labeling & misleading information as well - Simply labeling "Arabica" but nothing else. though Arabica is better than Robusta, theres still good/bad Arabicas To maintain their high volume, they are likely to use lower grade coffees (<80 points) that is cheaper and less in demand. Some will also throw in Robusta into their blends and roast it all dark. Except point 3, I actually put Starbucks into that list as well. Next time you ever visit any Starbucks outlet, take a peek at the roast dates on the packaging But hey, how do you know to appreciate good coffee before drinking bad coffee right? Get some, taste it together with some stuff from your local micro-roaster and decide for yourself if the price is worth it |

QUOTE(dextm @ Sep 14 2015, 11:31 AM) Need some advice, what is the best roast if I am going to use french press? I only have a humble French Press @ home. I noticed in auresso, can choose either espresso roast or filter roast. Planning to get a blend instead of single origin. French Press is an immersion brew method so very close to Aeropress so I would treat that as part of the Filter family. In general almost all methods that don't push 9bar of water pressure through a compress (unfiltered) coffee puck is considered filter Filter roast should be good for you to get the little nuances of the coffee varietal. Espresso roasts may be a little over developed and taste "roasty" or bitter in the French Press. It will also depend on your own taste preferences too - some like things darker (less acidic, more body and chocolaty) |

QUOTE(razorkid @ Sep 28 2015, 12:55 PM) hi, Looking to move to electric or still a hand grinder?I have decided to ditch my hario mini hand grinder after 1.5years which I use mainly for espresso. Any suggestions? I am still a newbie though Thanks! What's your espresso setup? Just to make sure we pair a decent grinder to your espresso machine level |

QUOTE(razorkid @ Sep 28 2015, 06:26 PM) I'd love to move to an electric grinder. Generally grinders are good investments and can get you through a multitude of espresso machines before needing an upgrade (assuming you're getting a decent one)I got a mypressi (portable espresso maker) as a gift I got stuck with a hand grinder because I was still a student and was moving around often However, now working, I can spoil myself with a new grinder I can allocate maybe around ~rm600 but not more than 1000 However, a mypressi isn't going to really show the quality of a grinder much. Don't get me wrong, I respect a guy that is willing to work hard for a good cuppa rather than taking the shortcut but I do hope you you will plan for a proper espresso machine soon in the future That being said, RM600 is really tight (espresso is all about equipment and is a pricey hobby). Maybe a WPM is better than nothing? Or hunt around for second hands. Good European grinders are typically built like a tank and can really last |

QUOTE(kurogetsu @ Sep 30 2015, 04:05 PM) Hello everyone.. I'm new here... I only go to local coffee shop yet have never make one... except for kopi o, kopi o ais, kopi suam, kopi ais... and yadda2.. but totally new to this... hehe.. usually what coffee beans that you use? i prefer mild taste, with not too bitter as my tummy can't handle... well... urm... GASSES.. hahahahaha.. oso got minor gastric but i'm addicted to coffee... any suggestion.. thanks so much.. sorry.. coffee noob coming through.. May want to read up more about your body being unable to handle coffee. While roasting levels/varietal may affect degree of acidity but in general coffee is acidic in nature. Some things you want to do is to not drink with an empty stomach is probably something you can practice.Otherwise, cold brew coffee is supposedly lower on the acids too. |

QUOTE(DEVILtonight @ Oct 7 2015, 02:43 AM) Did you guys mod it yourself? Got my Gaggia Classic a couple of months ago, and looking to mod it... just that am lacking the equipments. Found a place that charges RM70-ish for the 17mm rachet head, but hoping to loan it from someone. LOL. I have been guilty of cursing BLASPHEMY! at my 3-in-1 colleagues one too many times haha Very jelly that you could install a PID. A little out of my price range now (unless one is good with Arduino/electronics...). @ Seijyuro: A lot of folks start with Poemia. Have heard good things about it, and a couple of good folks here started with that. If you're just starting out, go ahead with that. Can always upgrade when you yearn for nicer flavours. I have a thing against Krups... that probably stem from one of their coffee grinders that use *blades* (BLASPHEMOUSSSSSS). |

QUOTE(cschuang @ Oct 12 2015, 01:32 PM) Hi all coffee lovers, Very very nice indeed! If you ever think to let go the bottomless, drop me a msg. I'm looking for one just wanna share my humble set up. [attachmentid=5107366] Espresso machine: 2nd hand Gaggia Classic, pre-phillips model (2005 made!). Owner claimed used less than 10 times. Got the machine in June, dismantled the whole machine, cleaned and found out really in good condition. Mods: Swapped with Silvia wand & OPV at 9 bar. Grinder: Raccea grinder (from Taobao) @ RM380! 60mm SS flat burr! Grinds about 16g in less than 7 sec. Mods: Removed hopper. removed stepped 'stopper', now on stepless. Changed a better set of tension springs for upper burr carrier, now much firmer, less wobbling. Removed micro switch, now on direct main switch. added aluminium washer at upper burr carrier to cover void area in the chamber thus reduce retention. Retention now at +-0.3g. 'Enhanced' a better chute exit as well as DIY 'doserless' funnel. Mostly plastic materials except, burr and carriers, motor and chamber. I would say, quite heavily modded/ enhanced. So far, very satisfied with the current performance. Accessories: Gaggia Bottomless PF. However, really under-utilised as only make 2 cups of drink (single shot each) in most of the time. May b thinking of PID the Classic, if got good and reliable source of parts and instructions. Currently on temperature surfing. Results have been good so far, at least too me. Enjoy your coffee! |

QUOTE(dwRK @ Oct 13 2015, 01:39 PM) Started a bag of Nicaragua from Coffea Coffee, RM60 for 200g "fresh" from the shop. Was a gift from friend. I would put Coffea Coffee together with chain store status. Beans are roasted and delivered from a faraway place and served 1mth old later to customers...Practically no creama...looks like stale beans...felt so cheated... Sounds alot like Starbucks... |

QUOTE(dwRK @ Oct 13 2015, 05:46 PM) Actually from relative... "Friend" shorter to type mah Might be a good skill training LOL.I no shy ask how much she paid for it so I have a reference point. While it's not my money...I have to deal with the disappointment everytime I pull a shot for the next 5 days. You can say I was cheated of satisfying pulls See if you tweak to a finer grind or dose higher, can you recover some of it? |

QUOTE(dwRK @ Nov 6 2015, 08:40 PM) I have sinned... Sinned you have! And still enjoying it...repent before its too late!Started a bag of supermarket coffee...expiry Jan 17...I'm estimating 10 months stale... I couldn't help myself, the bright orange packaging was too enticing No crema as expected...but surprisingly flavorful nutty and rich coco, good for latte. Will continue to fine tune tomorrow. Most likely to sample the rest of their range Good value for money stuff these for latte. Hahaha |

Just want to ask if there is any shop in penang area that sells good coffee beans/ground coffee? I'm struggling to get good source of coffee. As for now, i only buy brands like boncafe from hypermarket and they don't taste very good for me. I'm a part time hobby coffee roaster in Penang. PM me separately, I'll be glad to help a fellow Penangite out Thanks! |
