Hi, how long do you take to finish first crack with the gene cafe?
I roast own beans too using the cheap whirley pop with a thermometer. On a gas burner it takes me 10 minutes to roast till end of 1st crack. First crack starts at around 8 minutes into the roast.
My default daily blend are
1) 150g dry process brazil sao pedro
2) 50g ethiopia Yirgacheffe / Sidamo - wet process
3) 50g Sumatra Mandheling - wet process
4) 50g Guatemala - wet process
Item 1 150g to 130g after roast
Item 2,3,4 total 150g before roast to 130g after roast
I roast the dry process and wet process coffee seperately. And blend before grinding per cup.
If you were to order more coffees i would like to join in the bulk. Cheers!!
Ahh, a fellow roaster. You're from Penang too? Nice to meet you

I've roasted on a popcorn popper before and can understand the labor you go through. You definitely have the patience my friend
As for time to 1C, I usually hit that @ roughly 10mins in and done by 12mins but it depends on the type of bean and what's the profile I'm shooting for. I like to go with a 5min drying phase usually in the beginning just to prep the bean for heat later on to avoid scorching and uneveness so that may explain your quicker time
Isn't a 4 component blend challenging? I'm interested in your thought process too in developing it
Question I have is while it makes sense to roast dry/wet processed separately, any reason you particularly want to roast the Mandheling together with the rest? It being a low altitude bean might hit 1C much earlier than the rest and not to mention that it requires quite a different profile compared to the other SHG/SHB beans
