Wow, I didn't realize the coffee forum in Lowyat is so happening.
I'm actually a coffee lover from Penang too!. Nice to meet all you coffee enthusiast here smile.gif

I'm still learning up on roasting and tasting but you guys from Penang, if you don't mind being guinea pigs, I do roast more than I'm able to consume so I could sell you guys some too at minimal prices. This way i get to roast more often and with different varieties and build experience but you guys may have to bear with me on the quality haha. PM me if you're brave enough and interested!

Oh, and if anybody's curious, I mess with Aeropress at work with a hario mini and espresso at home with a Gaggia Evo/SM90 grinder.

Have a good day everyone

holy shit, that's brilliant bro, sign me up!

What's your setup, source of beans and type of beans?
*
First thing, I'm liking the enthusiasm! lol

I source mostly from eBay and help from friends and family to bring back from overseas (usually Sweet Marias). Favorites are African coffees so I have mostly those but thinking to get Americans now that they are at the peak of supply
I roast with a GeneCafe 300g batch roaster so definitely not at a commercial drum roaster level but decent enough to train on color, smell and input temps

These are the beans i have with me currently (just single origins, no skills in blending yet). Never roasted above FullCity (2nd crack) cos I LOVE acidity smile.gif
Ethiopian Sidamo
Ethiopian Kaffa Michiti - Finishing
Kenya Nyeri AB
Colombia Huila
Zambia Terranova
Peru COOPARM - Finishing
Burundi Muyinga Kavugangoma - Finishing
Sulawesi Taroja Peaberry
Costa Rica Terrazu

We can talk over PM and I can share what are the cup characters too for each and see what interests you smile.gif

we're actually eyeing this genecafe roaster too at taobao.. great to know that you're actually using it..  smile.gif
*
Its a great roaster to go with. But definitely if you are serious then a proper 1kg gas drum roaster with bean temp probes and airflow control is what you need to bring out the best in your beans. This is something I'm eyeing for but they are in the RM15k+ regions rclxub.gif Maybe someday haha

I do have plans to hack the roaster a little try to insert in a bean temp probe and write up a logging software. Then i can better correlate the flavor feedbacks to the temp curves I applied to the beans

Hi, how long do you take to finish first crack with the gene cafe?

I roast own beans too using the cheap whirley pop with a thermometer. On a gas burner it takes me 10 minutes to roast till end of 1st crack. First crack starts at around 8 minutes into the roast.

My default daily blend are
1) 150g dry process brazil sao pedro
2)  50g ethiopia Yirgacheffe / Sidamo - wet process
3)  50g Sumatra Mandheling - wet process
4)  50g Guatemala - wet process

Item 1 150g to 130g after roast
Item 2,3,4 total 150g before roast to 130g after roast

I roast the dry process and wet process coffee seperately. And blend before grinding per cup.

If you were to order more coffees i would like to join in the bulk. Cheers!!

Ahh, a fellow roaster. You're from Penang too? Nice to meet you smile.gif
I've roasted on a popcorn popper before and can understand the labor you go through. You definitely have the patience my friend thumbup.gif

As for time to 1C, I usually hit that @ roughly 10mins in and done by 12mins but it depends on the type of bean and what's the profile I'm shooting for. I like to go with a 5min drying phase usually in the beginning just to prep the bean for heat later on to avoid scorching and uneveness so that may explain your quicker time

Isn't a 4 component blend challenging? I'm interested in your thought process too in developing it
Question I have is while it makes sense to roast dry/wet processed separately, any reason you particularly want to roast the Mandheling together with the rest? It being a low altitude bean might hit 1C much earlier than the rest and not to mention that it requires quite a different profile compared to the other SHG/SHB beans

Hi, nice to meet you too, im from KL by the way. The only reason i roast the mandheling with the rest of the wet process beans is to save time. I used to roast all the beans one shot before, but i find some beans are different type of roast level due to their characteristics. Since now youve mentioned it maybe i would try to roast the mandheling on its own.
Ive never import via bulk order from farms before
But purchases ive made via ebay, usually around 5-10 pounds manage to bypass the AP thingy. Price wise range from rm70-90 per kilogram of green beans. It used to be a few ringgit cheaper before the ringgit drops.

At ard rm80 for 1kg of green beans you will get approximately 840g after roasting. So per 1gm of roasted coffee cost RM0.0952 cents, per cup average 16g should be RM1.53. This is without the cost of roasting , gas/electricity and equipment.

Cheers!

Interesting. Thanks for the info!I never dared to purchase up to your quantity for fear of confiscation (and no where to find out the actual "limit"). I''m going to go try buying some Yirgacheffe smile.gif
For those of you that had expressed interested in ordering roasted beans from me, let me see how this goes and I'll update the pricing accordingly.

Nice! Anyone roasting beans with floral acidity? I would like to try a bag biggrin.gif

A Yirgacheffe would be close or a nice Central like Guatemala or Panama. Unfortunately haven't received my Yirg so the closest I've got is an Ethiopian Guji Sidamo. Much more fruit oriented rather than floral but definitely there in the aromatics. Are you in PG though?

I'm in Puchong.. Ethiopian beans sounds good. You normally roast how long after first crack? Interested to try 500g.
*
Roughly 2 mins more after end of 1st crack but with lowered temp to stretch out the development phase
Too bad, not a commercial roaster with proper packaging/delivery service. Worry go bad by the time reach you haha

Hi All,

updating my first humble and budget set-up.

Gaggia Classic (2nd hand), replaced with Silvia steam wand, OPV adjusted to 9bar. Dismantled the whole machine up to the boiler 2 days after receiving the machine. Initially, was worry about it, but managed to assemble it back after cleaning and all are working fine.  sweat.gif

Currently, still waiting for my grinder from China. Have been using Merdeka coffee beans from Antipodean. RM26.50 per 250g for all beans. Plus, free 1 coffee for every purchase of beans.  rclxms.gif So far, tried their Old Dark and Mandehling Estate.  biggrin.gif

has been pulling 2 cups of latte on daily basis (double into 2 single) and espresso shots has been good with fresher beans and proper grind size. However, still a long way to go to get a consistent microfoam.  cry.gif

Finally got my home barista accessories yesterday! rclxm9.gif

I have 1 new bottomless portafilter which cant fit my classic, therefore, I'm letting it go. Please PM to deal, refer my sale post below:

Enjoy your coffee!

Cheers.

U scared me a moment. Swiss water process should be non toxic. It does not involve solvent.

I have sensitive heart. I thought i will get tolerance to it after sometimes, but it is still there. Haha. I realized the palpitation comes when i take single perfect shot. Before this my shot inconsistant, now they r getting more consistant, even 100% arabica can cause palpitation.

Im getting siphon & butane burner for fun from taobao. Timemore brand. Air freight. They may arrive this weekend
*
Well, that is assuming that those beans are using Swiss water process which I believe is more expensive.
I think decaf is tough to locate in Malaysia and you would get better chances with chain stores like Starbucks or maybe ordering from overseas. Unfortunately, the sacrifice is freshness
I feel you bro, loving coffee but can't take the caffeine is a torture sweat.gif sweat.gif

i asked the doi chaang outlet in shaftbury cyberjaya a while ago and they are selling the peaberry beans for rm72 per 250g....

so rm50 doesnt sound that bad now tongue.gif
*
I think that's typical KL prices right? RM40-50 per 200g
In Penang, I've heard before of RM60-70 for premium beans those reputable(or "branded") roasters - Coffee Lane, Full of Beans, Lighthouse

Okay okay so far have tried the Ethiopian beans. I used 16g in a 2 cup siphon measurement and extraction time is 40 secs full immersion and cool off and drain is 1 min and 30 secs. Whole cup in 2 mins 20 seconds including quick boil off biggrin.gif

Taste wise, I'm getting a lot of body and did I taste apricots or peach? After taste is cinnamon.. Very nice!
Cool! The Ethiopian Sidamo is natural processed so good body is expected. Peach would be close - for me is more of jackfruit-like but yea, definitely a fragrant fruity flavor smile.gif

How does the Syphon compare to a Chemex? Immersion get's you a stronger body right? Maybe the Chemex/V60 might get you even more of the delicate flavors

Anyhow I'm very excited with the results you're getting. Looking forward to the Burundi next icon_rolleyes.gif

My first few attempt with syphon. Why brewing with syphon like making kopi O. Haha. I dont have good bean with me at the moment. Adding sugar and ice = kopi O 👍

Brewed with a blend or single origin?
