Err, Thanks for the input.

Any good recommendation for a decent grinder then?
*
Ultimately, it depends on where you want to go from here onwards.

Espresso Setup Possibilities:
1k region
1) Philips Saeco, it uses a pressurized porta filter, so it won't make genuine espresso, but you can depressurize it later when you get a good grinder. Spend the rest of the surplus into an electric grinder. Manual grinders are a pain in the ass.
2k region (if you've decided to top up)
1) If you're gutsy, buy from Taobao, you should be able to afford a WPM Combo. Maybe a kd-17 grinder and a Thermoblock based Espresso Machine. @tikietic should be more well versed in WPM machines.

Otherwise for Pourovers/Full immersion brews:
1) Get a Lelit PL-53 grinder and a pour over setup. Later when you feel like it, get a proper Espresso Machine and it'll pair with the grinder with no problems.

for those of you who've been to this place.. we took a bag to test xia..  we're told that it's roasted twice a month.. this is the beans that the barista uses for all their espresso-based drinks that they served their customers..

it's very pocket-friendly and the siizzt taste good, a heavier body compared to the darker roast pureespresso. the nice thing is, we can duplicate the taste from our meal there with our pocket-friendly espresso machine, wpm kd-210s2..

Awesome.

Any recommendation for Grinders then?

I saw one above but would prefer some opinion before doing my research and grabbing one later.
*
I would just get a Krups GVX21 for cheap and then upgrade later when I need to. Pressurized Portafilters should be less grind sensitive.

wpm zd-17 is an overkill, bro.. for the price of zd-17.. can seriously consider the small and robust anfim ks-touch liao..
sumimasen.. since when capped at 1k oo? was commenting on your suggested CC1 or Silvano.. they're not cheap xia and they aren't readily available in m'sia rite?  sweat.gif
*
The fella got cap at 1k la.

My original point is that you might as well go all out towards entry level CC1/Silvano, or don't do it until then. These intermittent itches and upgrades very "chai leong" one.

So u r from penang? There is a cafe at queensbay mall selling fresh roast for rm60/500g.
*
RM60 mahal bro. Antipodean 20++ only for 250g only leh.

Is this Plan B we're talking about?

Btw, the latest Frank Laurent opened at Udini Mall is a "roaster". They brought in a huge roaster for display. Donno is for show or has seen any use la. So far I went there ask they say no jual...yet.

Another one is Macallum, who roasts their own stuff, but last I talked to the taukeh he say he sendiri also not cukup use, donno how to sell.

Penang memang is jipet ones.

QUOTE(sapora @ Jul 21 2015, 09:17 PM)
oh i see, there is the diff eh between pressurized n depressurized?? hmm i might have to check it out on youtube, thanks!
*
Yep.

Depressurized will give you an "upgrade", but you'll need to get a good grinder to boot. Since a good grinder is always necessary, you might as well upgrade your grinder first.

Im using WPM ZD-16, cornical burr. It is suitable for budget home barista without compromise quality. I cant tell there different between home made latte (using Oscar & ZD-16) and the latte served at cafe.

It was bought from taobao, rmb 725. Hongleong wise card 10% cash rebate, taobao under groceries, only apply for wise card. Around rm415
Sea freight, asiadaigou.com rm38, small box.
Total paid rm453

bro, how about over to mainland/providence? heard several new gigs at autocity/juru?
*
So far. Oil money expensive yo, but perhaps I should go down there just for the adventure.

The house consumes 48 grams per day (father two shots, me four shots)

So it's kinda expensive whenever I restock.

QUOTE(Tikietic @ Jul 21 2015, 11:42 PM)
rm26.50/250gram.. surprizingly it's the same price for all their beans.. from the basic espresso blend to more exotic indo/java varieties.. if you can catch their roast cycle(twice a month), it'll be fresh as ever.. the stock that the barista uses are those 1kg weekly runs.. we bought ours at the atria..
*
At 26.50 fresh, I'm jealous as fuck. I'm seriously beginning to consider home roasting and just buying the green beans off from Sitigun (of course, considering begging him to at this point).

QUOTE(mel5582 @ Jul 21 2015, 11:57 PM)
Btw, Taiping also got coffee factory.. don't need to go till Ipoh. But not sure how if they have blends..

I'm from Penang also.. but not really familiar with the coffee scene there. Tried quite a number of cafes, but just a handful that is really tasty.
*
Nice!

Have you tried St Presso's Coffee at Bayan Lepas Area? I really like their stuff. Quite possibly the only small-ish coffee shops in Penang I love going. The taukeh is knowledgeable too.

Too bad them wankers don't want jual me beans.

I believe they have. I'll check with my missus and get back to you guys on that.
Have yet to try.. what's the address? Yeah, one thing I realize is, cafes that serves awesome coffees are majority wankers lol. They won't sell their beans.. Either that or their beans cost more than the beans you can get from overseas. Like Australia.. Or Intelligentsia.. It's like waddafack?

Sini.

The other branches I tarak tried before, best you don't make that sort of risk.

QUOTE(luvox @ Jul 22 2015, 11:01 AM)
That rm60/500g is not plan B. Urban cafe. They are not roaster. But from its package, i guess it is roasted by lighthouse. Never ask plan B at queensbay mall before.
Penang does not have Antipodean. it is about cheapest option fresh roast in penang.
I subscribe auresso, 2 weeksly grand central & rubra, the rest of days i took urban cafe bean.
*
Thanks for the info bro.

QUOTE(patryn33 @ Jul 22 2015, 11:14 AM)
I also consume about the same amount, 3 double shot.
340gm last me like 7 days.
Local roaster cheaper 450gm like usd$15 not tried maybe do so next week.

That price is really cheap, Intelligensia has some interesting seasonal offering too bad they often not offer in their cafe. Not tried their analog or fruit bat as they not sold at their cafe. I don't like to pay for shipping, cheap too

Coffee memang is no different than cocaine liao. Very cham one.

QUOTE(luvox @ Jul 22 2015, 11:43 AM)
Im happy with my stock oscar performance. As long as it can prodece those addictive perfect shot aroma that on par with cafe coffee, i wont do upgrade. Im not aim for perfection. I may just stick onto current setup until they stop working, then switch to those poisoning machine.

Do u think using timer to switch on this machine will spoil the machine one day? I know it needs vacuum breaker for optimal fuction with timer.
*
Thing with OPV is that it makes your shots much more predictable and "controllable". brows.gif sure tak mau upgrade ka? #poison

The Vac breaker I got from Elektros, IIRC is from Musica's equivalent. Since the new oscar units uses the same boiler as the Musica, you can say that when you install it on the Oscar, they are functionally equivalent and were originally meant to function that way.

As for whether it will "spoil" or not, you no pakai Vac breaker also will "spoil" punya. This is true for any machines out there. NS are quite reputable for their build quality, so either way you're on the very safe side.

Wow, I didn't realize the coffee forum in Lowyat is so happening.
I'm actually a coffee lover from Penang too!. Nice to meet all you coffee enthusiast here smile.gif

I'm still learning up on roasting and tasting but you guys from Penang, if you don't mind being guinea pigs, I do roast more than I'm able to consume so I could sell you guys some too at minimal prices. This way i get to roast more often and with different varieties and build experience but you guys may have to bear with me on the quality haha. PM me if you're brave enough and interested!

Oh, and if anybody's curious, I mess with Aeropress at work with a hario mini and espresso at home with a Gaggia Evo/SM90 grinder.

Have a good day everyone

holy shit, that's brilliant bro, sign me up!

What's your setup, source of beans and type of beans?

no idea, I'm very sceptical of the shots pulled by "nice looking" stores, I rather buy the beans and pull em myself.

I should definitely go try it again lol.

any recommendation ?
would like to be "home barista" ..lol
*
Home Barista usually means you're willing to put in effort into polishing your skills on a proper semi-auto machine.

The one you linked earlier is a full auto, which means little to no effort to produce a cup of coffee. Usually, these machines don't give you anything close to the "real thing".

That being said, if you don't mind going down the rabbit hole, push your budget a bit and get the good grinder, i.e. the Lelit PL-53. For the machine, get the Oscar and mod your way to Musica.

Try to look around in KL.

Some might import it.

Those two are one of the best "entry machines" money can get, at a cheap price.

I'm more leaning towards the Silvano though laugh.gif
