Ars technica also have some sort of 2012 Smartphone shoot-out. I dismissed it as it was too US centric and I immediately discarded the writers opinion when he says that the winner for the best camera was the iPhone 5. The writer is also so biased against Nokia (because of the weight) that his grading system was really funny. The Lumia came in 2nd in almost everything (Camera, Navigation, Productivity) BUT here's the kicker, the best Windows Phone is the HTC 8x (where did that come from?). Total rubbish article.

Apple's processing software for the iPhones have always been good. They managed to make 2MP pictures look good all the way back to the original iPhone. The pictures usually come out good without much effort from the user. The 920's camera is overrated. GSMArena's review about the camera: "We'll go right ahead and rip the band aid off for you - the photos are average. We took a Samsung Galaxy S III, a Nokia 808 PureView and an iPhone 5 with us while shooting samples with the 920, so we have grounds for comparison." The camera in the 920 isn't as great as most people think, at least for daytime photos. |

It depends on the level of the writer or reviewer. From what I know most of this mobile reviewer rate it without photography experience so the rating is based on the shutter click.
Iphone is designed to be use on auto that's why result always iphone wins but other phone are not designed in auto. So it takes more effort to achieve quality as iphone or higher. That's why even I said its average not many ppl can get it because they have never.captuted the details I can so by 1 peek I know how far it can go by its specification and limitation The logic is apply similar to screen ppi more ppi sharper it is. I'm not a photography pro but from what I've seen with iPhone 1-4 & new new iPad(I've no idea how to call it) the resulting pictures are only good if there's decent lighting. The 920's camera is overrated. GSMArena's review about the camera: "We'll go right ahead and rip the band aid off for you - the photos are average. Perhaps it's high time Nokia start highlighting Lumia series other features.I used my fathers 710 for the weekend and I found the experience quite pleasant even though there are some noticeable missing features compared to Android the overall UI is nice.Love the City Lens app.Well build & quite useful. I still wish Elop didn't put all the egg in 1 basket though... |

After reading all the reviews, i cant help to feel a bit disappointed with the inconsistent camera performance. As I am a person who use auto mostly, the 808 looks way way better in term of sharpness and detail... Perhaps is partly the WP8 imaging engine fault?

Pureview 808 is a different beast altogether and yes Lumia 920 uses the PureView branding (which I think is lame but I guess it's a marketing thing).I do agree that the camera performance in daylight (outdoors) is average but personally for me I take a lot of photos indoors and I can tell you, it's light and day between my 4s and the Lumia 920 and the iPhone 5's camera is almost identitical to the 4s so I cannot see how you would rate the iPhone 5 as better. I would agree that it can be rated higher if the comparison is done for outdoor lighting but then again, if you are going to rank a winner based on outdoor lighting, then you have to create a category for indoor lighting and low light condition. We are not even talking of the OIS capability and its effect on Video recording so when Ars mentioned Winner in camera technology, I guess they are only talking about photos (which I already mention I have issues with) and not even video recording. I was riding a bike with my 2 kids yesterday and took a video recording of them and the resulting video on the 920 was plain awesome. Later i did the same on my 4s .... it's good but nothing close to the 920. So personally I am happy with the camera capability of the 920. I hope Nokia will come up with a patch for the outdoor photo issue because the prototype 920 tested by Engadget had no issue with outdoor lighting. |

I think there is nothing wrong with the OIS. Rather the imagining algorithm is kindda sux. I dont remember Nokia has any of this inconsistent quality issue with the 808 n N8 which were Symbian based....I do agree that the camera performance in daylight (outdoors) is average but personally for me I take a lot of photos indoors and I can tell you, it's light and day between my 4s and the Lumia 920 and the iPhone 5's camera is almost identitical to the 4s so I cannot see how you would rate the iPhone 5 as better. In any case I hope it performs better then my current N8. Do share some of your picture samples... This post has been edited by WhitE LighteR: Dec 5 2012, 04:08 PM |

QUOTE(kuroneko0509 @ Dec 5 2012, 04:12 PM) well, they do have some problem with 900 camera i believe... ya.. coz if i remember correct, Symbian dont do aggressive image sharpening or any vivid colors etc etc... older nokia algorithm always prefer natural color saturation and less to no sharpening. They rather the image blur then it being over sharpen.i guess the usual imaging algorithm used with Symbian isn't compatible with WP OS... dunno |

If you ask any of the photgraphy nut, they will prefer the image taken by Lumia as it is not processed too much by the OS. It is more under-stated and more natural looking than the extra saturation that you see in the iOS.
I find the colors okay since I have a Nikon D300. I always find the vivid colors in the iPhone a bit unreal. It looks nice but not very "naturale" as I would put it. I guess it's all in the perception. Millions of people who are used to the way images are displayed in iOS will be used to the vivid colors and will feel that the Nokia images are not so good. |

Windows Phone seems new to camera handling.. I do preferred the new Galaxy Camera camera controls, its pretty awesome! I hope 808PV can put up the manual control (and fix the banding issue, of course) then I will surely come back to 808 BEAST!!!!!!!!
