ATTENTION TO LENOVO Y500 OWNERS AND POTENTIAL LENOVO Y500 OWNERS!!

I am glad that I bought the Lenovo Y500. I managed to play around with the laptop. I installed some NFS games (Hot Pursuit, Shift 1, and Shift 2) . I was quite satisfied with the FPS.

Everything was OK, with exception the brightness control is lost through the Fn key when I upgraded to the latest WHQL or Beta Nvidia Driver. But it's okay, I thought it could be fixed later, when Lenovo itself release its own Nvidia Driver.

But......not until last night.

My hard drive is 500GB and the drive C is more than 400GB and there is drive D (Lenovo) 20GB.

So, I thought why not shrink the drive C for the purpose of Windows 8 system and create a new larger partition to store my games, stuff, videos.

Then, I downloaded the EaseUS Partition Master Home Edition.

What I did was, shrink the drive C to 100GB, and create a new partition on the unallocated space (I think more than 300GB) on a new drive letter E: (since letter D is occupied by Lenovo).

So, the software asked the laptop to be restarted in order to complete the changes. I allowed it to restart and it booted with EaseUS partition progress.

In the middle of the process, the laptop suddenly restarted.

only to boot with this error ....

I got panicked, and tried press "Enter". And the screen proceeded to....

Now, I got really panicked. But then I thought, there is this Lenovo "One Key Recovery" . The button which situated next to the power input plug.

So, I pressed the button and I chose "System Recovery"...

But, it wasn't successful! In fact, it just proceed to the same previous 2 screenshots that I showed you.

At this point of time, you would know just how I felt  sad.gif  cry.gif  icon_question.gif  rclxub.gif
So, it was at 1.30 in the morning, I googled to find this solution

Solution
, albeit it may not be suitable for a beginner like me.

Lenovo One-Key Recovery and Partition Problem

And apparently, when I searched the Lenovo forum, look what I found --->>
It has been reported that if the user change the partition, the One-Key Recover feature becomes useless and in effect you won't be able to recover your system.

At this moment, I have no idea what to do. I have no guts to try with the solution above. It seems complicated and I scared more errors could arise.

So, guys, maybe I plan to send back the laptop to the reseller.

But the point is, To those who intends to repartition or make new partition in your Lenovo, please DO NOT DO SO, unless you are really sure what is the outcome will be

Anyhow, I'd appreciate if somebody could help me with this problem. I'm like in this kind of "bricked" situation for my laptop  icon_question.gif  cry.gif

sss2sssss <<---- thanks for your input. But, tomorrow morning I will send the laptop to the Lenovo Service Center. Hopefully, they can get my laptop fixed.

minzisme <<----- Yes, i tried the latest 310.64. But you will lose the brightness control Fn. The brightness will always be at maximum. It's okay during day time, but quite eye-sore during night.

As far as the game I have played are concerned...it can be said more smooth.

Actually, the benefit of the upgrade is that Nvidia will keep updating the SLI profile for newer games.
So, instead of using 1 GPU. Now, we can utilise both GPUs.

Listed from Nvidia website:

NVIDIA SLI Technology – Adds or updates the following SLI profiles:

Alan Wake's American Nightmare – added
Borderlands 2 – added
Darksiders 2 – added
End of Nations - added
F1 2011 – updated
F1 2012 – added
Final Fantasy XIV – updated
Nexuiz - added
Orcs Must Die! 2 – added
PlanetSide 2 - updated
Saints Row: The Third – updated
Shogun 2: Total War – updated
Sleeping Dogs – updated
Spec Ops: The Line - added
The Secret World - updated
Torchlight II - added
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier - added
Tornado Force - added
Tribes: Ascend – updated

You can always check the release note accompanying the driver release.

But, the short-fall is that you will lose the brightness control. (you can't do anything about it) . Unless , you don't mind.. u may proceed to download.

You can upgrade directly to the latest one. Just make sure you uninstall every Nvidia Driver as per in Control Panel "Program and Features".

Oh, by the way...if you have other games than I played. Maybe you can report whether is improvement? Thanks.

2 things:

1. As always, make sure you prepare a recovery media before you play with partition.

2. Don't need to use any 3rd party partition software in Win8. Do you know Win8 has its own partition management tool?
Just type "Partition" and enter. You will see an Admin tool "Create and Format HDD partition". It's not flashy, but all the functionalities are there. You can resize all you want. Yet another proof that Win8 is better than Win7 smile.gif

2. I am aware that Windows 8 has its own partition management, and I have tried once. Bu it has its own limitation whereby you can shrink the volume up to certain amount. Beyond that, it is not allowable. In this case, I tried to shrink my C: (400++GB) to 100GB. But Windows 8 does not allow that.

And apparently, when I checked back to the Lenovo forum, there is issues about this "Partition and One-Key". They (forum moderator), said that you can't actually resize the partition at all! Not even a Megabyte!

If you resize the partition, the One-Key Recovery won't be functioning!

They should have made reference in the user guide! And be careful, this seems to apply to other Lenovo laptops as well which have the One-Key Recovery feature.

Anyway, I will send my laptop in just a while to IBM Malaysia. Hopefully, they can repair my laptop.

Yes, I am aware that the OKR won't work if partition is changed.
OKR is basically a (tone down / rip off) of Thinkvantage suite long available in the Thinkpad series. When Lenovo bought Thinkpad from IBM, the wonderful blue botton in Thinkpad get migrated to the OKR in Ideapad (but with a lot of good features remove).
Ok, let me test if the Win8 restore and reset feature get mess up if I change partition in my Y580. If it work, then maybe it will be a better option than the broken OKR.

Bro? Seriously you wanna test it? I expect that you will encounter the same problem as mine. It's the risk you have to take.

Anyway, if it's working...than please report in here. Thanks.

It's alright. I never care about the OKR anyway laugh.gif (after using T series a long time and see what a proper tool should be sweat.gif At least there is a fair trade off there)

Will work on this after kids going to bed tonight laugh.gif

And you may want to look at this thread if you are keen to get back the OKR.

As in my case, Y500 does not have Optical Disc Drive (ODD). So, my option would only be to rely on the OKR should my system fails.

So, basically, I'm stucked at the "Winload.efi cannot be found". I, maybe can reinstall Windows 8. But how can I get the installation OEM of Windows 8? I have no idea man.

I sent the laptop already. Hopefully, they can fix it.
