I understand some of the excitement, in terms of design, possible price point, possible performance, etc ...

But I don't buy the swappable bit. Nvidia SLI, as far as I know, only work with GPU with the same model number. Since the primary card in this case is the 650M, you will be stuck with the 650M ultrabay as well. I don't think you could later buy a 680M ultrabay (if Lenovo actually release one) and swap it in, unless Lenovo / Nvidia provide the driver support. Unless there is lots of demand for it, don't pin on special driver support from Nvidia, just look at Linux.

Aww... was really hoping this will come with an Ultrabay battery. But it doesnt seem to be the case sad.gif

You never know. The whole idea of ultrabay is that Lenovo could release lots of them, DVD, Blu Ray, HDD, GPU (in this case), and you may get your battery. You then buy whatever you want, and swap in whichever you need.
However, even for ThinkPad, I find this whole ultrabay thing unwieldy. I am not going to carry all these gadgets to travel. On my desk, a docking station is a much more elegant solution.

If the price is indeed RM3799, then compare to Y580 RM2999.
We are getting:
GT650M SLI vs GTX660M
Better heatsink design.
More bling design (may not suit corp office sweat.gif

Since GT650M is comparable to GT560M, if GT650M SLI is comparable to GT560M SLI, then we are looking at performance more or less on par with GT675M (maybe not GT675MX, my guess), depend on driver support (very important). Anyway, a single CPU is always a cleaner solution than SLI in my book.

I will hold on to my Y580 for now biggrin.gif

what i saw from chinese forum ,there is people doing test ,gt650m *2 in 3dmark can run p 3600+
if with newest driver for gt650msli, i think reach 4000+ is not a problem
cant win gtx675mx,but is similar to gtx675m
*
As I expected then hmm.gif
Anyway, the only major beef I have with the Lenovo Y series is the glossy screen. Just hope one day they will provide an option for matte screen tongue.gif

Looking at some screenshot, I think another advantage over Y580 is Y500 give easy full access to all the important components. Much easier to clean and maintain thumbup.gif

I hope Y500 is a major success, and Lenovo will continue with the ultrabay SLI development rclxms.gif

Got some flickering in DOTA2, maybe its my outdated driver. I'll update and make more reviews lol

What kind of "flickering"? Micro-stuttering? (finger cross) (Shouldn't since it is only DOTA2)

btw the latest Nvidia driver doesn't support 650M SLI, and it says I need to download the package from manufacturer (lenovo) itself, which is the same driver that comes with the machine.

So from what we have seen so far:
Y500 beat Y580
cool factor
temp
benchmark

Only thing left is the "flicker" mentioned earlier, and the driver.

Since Y500 utilise ultrabay, it means owner could easily buy a ultrabay Bluray from Lenovo and swap in later when you have more money smile.gif

so is this Y500 GT650M sli will perform better than Y580 GTX660M?

Read the posts lah biggrin.gif
Yes, 650M SLI have better benchmark than 660M.
But so far 1 owner here report some "flickering", and I think he may be refer to "micro-stuttering". It's a phenomena that some gamers don't mind at all, but deal breaker for others sweat.gif And we can't pick this out from normal benchmarking, you really have to try it to see if it bother you.

i had read the post, but so far there is not much info on GT650M SLI, so i have doubt its better than GTX660M.

as per gpu-z posted by jabberwocky, lets compare it with info from nvidia website (GTX660M spec) http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-g.../specifications, I know the website can work as a reference only.

i'll head to Y580 thread and see is there any gpu-z posted

What Jabberwocky posted was more like a confirmation for Malaysia context smile.gif Good job Jabberwocky (if I remember correctly he mentioned this is the 1st time he run benchmark suite) and the rest thumbup.gif And thanks ytlay notworthy.gif
The 1st post of this thread already listed a few benchmark done in China (same GT650M SLI).
In short, benchmark indicate it is about GT670M level, under GT670MX. Of course benchmark can only tell you so much, with the normal caveat that come with SLI setup (in this case apparently through SATA rather than PCIe).

Y500 & Y400 ultrabay support both PCIe and SATA as per the pic below. External gpu connected to PCIe port and ODD connected to SATA port.

Computer hardware need software drivers so that Operating System (Microsoft Windows) know how to deal with the hardware.

Your screen shot show that a driver is causing a problem. (mt7118vu .... )
That driver is used by WiMax (you know, the broadband service by Yes, P1 ...) adapter (a piece of microchip) manufactured by Mediatek.
Unless your Y500 has this adapter, this driver should not be active at all.
Go to control panel, device manager. Do you see any yellow (?) or (!) ?

yes2,i can see that

it says unknown usb device (port reset failed)
*
Good. Now right click on the entry with the yellow (!), select properties.
The 1st tab is the "General" tab, and it will give you a general description of the problem.
Click on the tab "Driver". Then select "driver details". Do you see the "mt7118vu ..."?
If yes, we have locate the problem.
I am pretty sure Y500 in Malaysia don't have Wimax built in (anyone can confirm)?
If we are sure, then you have 2 choice:
1. Disable the driver. Click "Disable".
2. Uninstall the driver. Click "Uninstall".

I suspect this driver get in there because Lenovo is doing a disk image install of OS from a Y500 that may have WiMax.

Win8 don't natively support rar (zip should be fine).
Install winrar or 7zip.

Any exe?
How do you install any games? smile.gif
Wah, running benchmark first before games? laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Can think of 2 possiblities:
1. UAC - User Access Control. Do you login as admin?
Or read this:
https://chentiangemalc.wordpress.com/2012/0...inconsistent-2/

In short, did you change a theme? It impact the UAC setting in "Sound".
Control Panel > Sound > Change System Sound > Window UAC > NONE.

2. Anti-virus acting up.

Was about to buy Y580 then saw this thing in lowyat yesterday. Dafuq.... What a quality lookin laptop... In my oppinion far apart then Y580 (I compared it side by side). Now my problem is now to increase the budget (Damn it!) and hopefully to get one without the second GPU ( Its upgradable, so might as well upfrade the worthy one in coming years)

I now see Y580 as an ugly brother of Y500.... Its built solidly and the design is classy. Wonder why theres still no professional reviews for this unique laptop. Usually reviewers run to review new tech.
*
I love the Y500 design. But you are spending RM800 more.
Suppose you get the Y580. What you can do with RM800:
buy a SSD and swap with HDD, buy a caddy for the HDD and swap with ODD, buy more RAM, upgrade warranty to 3 year on site, buy a cooling pad.
You get a machine that lose out in raw GPU power, less vow factor.
You get a machine that boot faster, run apps much snappier, with better warranty support, and never need to deal with SLI.
Not a bad trade-off. My hands is getting itchy, but Y500 is not a blow out winner over Y580.

And no, to get the SLI working, both GPU must be same model. This is as good as it get. You will not be able to get a "better" ultrabay GPU next time.

only SLI driver from Lenovo so far. Don't use the current stock driver (beta 310.64) from Nvidia (it does not support GT650M SLI).

Until you see anything here to confirm otherwise:
