hi all,

kinda noob to the forums. planning to get a jrt, to keep our german shepherd at home company... is this a sound idea? we've been thinking of getting a smaller sized dog with good personality, so that it can get along with the older gsd. anyone here have experience with keeping a jrt with a bigger companion?

my husband and i do a lot of outdoor activities - hiking and swimming mostly, and we usually bring our gsd along... would this be a good idea with the jrt? btw, i heard that jrts love to have playing space, and we have a big yard (with lots of plants, errk!) for the gsd, so hoping this would be a plus point.

any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks!

Get your dog your GSD to socialize with your intended JRT as often as possible... JRT n GSD is dominian dog, thus u might have some problem there..socialization and joining OB class will indeed help a lot.

Yeah.. it happen to my Shadow boy as well, sumtimes is minor thing. Dunno how to explain to you, will be able to show you went we meet on the 19th November.. dont say u not coming..  whistling.gif Was thinking to get a min pin to accompany my JRT.. but I know that Shadow is getting abit bossy these days.. possesive. Will see how.

No worries, i'll be going. in fact i looking forward to the date itself....Shadow Bossy? hahahaa....Ty'rel become very very attached to me and keep bullying my niece...hahahaa....my boy would howl or cry whenever it know that i'm home and cannot see me...if i go to toilet to poo or pee, Ty'rel will follow me..the other day my niece was massaging me with her foot ( u know i lying on the floor and she standing at my back ) Ty'rel bark at her and chase her away...tot she's hurting me...hahahahaa  icon_idea.gif  rclxm9.gif  thumbup.gif ..That's my boy!!!

@salabianca
Well my 6 year old pair of labradors cant accept my JRT, I think u must bring ur GSD to meet the JRT puppy, see how it turns out. DOgs that are not socialize often with other dogs tend to develop alot of nasty behaviors. Well hope to hear good news from you, JRT's are really nice dogs.  biggrin.gif

Same problem i'm worring aboout too...as i planning to get a female for my boy by next year...i planning to get a GR a more freindlier dog or the Pug...hmm...who knows a good GR breeder or a pug breeder around? guys dont ask me to check with MKA...lol whistling.gif

As hojeff mentioned, both breeds cn b fairly dominant so may not b ideal 4 each other. Really depends on d individual JRT, coz deir personalities cn range from friendly to feisty. If ur defination of 'good personality' = nice, friendly n well behaved, den d JRT breed may fall short of ur expectation rclxub.gif .

GSDs hv strong prey drive n may mistake a speedy white JRT for a rabbit n gv chase. My JRT hs bn chased by a number of large dogs b4 ... most times, d larger dog is in play mode. Other times, my JRT is feisty n fierce enuf 2 stand his ground till d other dog backs up. sweat.gif

thumbup.gif Outdoor activities n a large backyard r ideal 4 JRTs. D more exercise dey get, d more settled dey r at home. However, offleash runs r not recommended unless u hv a reliable recall n d environment is safe n secure. JRTs hunt on sight n dey'll naturally gv chase to any small, fast moving object.

If u still intend 2 get a JRT, make sure dat both dogs do get along well. JRTs tend to get along better with K9s of d opposite sex. cool.gif

I will have to agree with the sifu's quote's. I have been browsing books about JRT's at MPH and was surprised to read alot of amazing things that a JRT can do. Bliv me if I tell you that once there was a farmer in England who fell into a large fox hole and the JRT he kept as a hunting companion save his life alerted other hunters to help him out. Very sad ending bcoz one day the JRT went out for a hunting trip and nvr came back, big possibility of the poor furkid fell into a large fox hole. Well, JRT's are very intelligent dogs and like challenges, moody at times but curious all the times. So be prepared to take up the challenge of a bz schedule if waana keep a JRT, if one should keep more than 1 JRT, make sure its the opposite sex, else there will be war all the time, nastier each time. tongue.gif

Hv yet 2 c a JRT executing d 'play dead' trick well. Dese guys r more keen on tricks involving movement eg. weaving thru legs, spinning n jumping tricks. Dey dun really enjoy staying still 4 any period of time drool.gif ... of course, there r exceptions.

If u r still keen, cn try dis:
If he knows how 2 'belly up' ie. lie on back n expose his belly for a good rub, den all u hv 2 do is get him to stay still whilst in d 'belly up' position. Once he is comfortable with dis position, add a command n hand signal eg. 'Bang' n fingers shaped like a gun.

Sounds easy rite ... d tricky part is 2 get him 2 stay still with his belly exposed. whistling.gif JRTs arent exactly d submissive type, but good luck anyway. cool.gif

hi all!!

thanks for all the advice... really helped! my gsd is pretty friendly with other dogs, and seem to do well with our resident cat (keep my fingers crossed so she doesn't one day turn around and chase the cat instead!)

been reading up on jrts, and my main concern is now whether it can learn to tolerate the cat, since they love to chase small animals. because the cat is the oldest pet in the house, i suppose i should give it 'priority' smile.gif

anyways, its amazing what you can teach a dog, especially the smarter ones like jrt... i've been told by a friend with a jrt the only thing he cannot do is learn to sit still!

yes, i will be at the dog-carnival-thing on 19th november. maybe i can meet up with other dog owners, we can have a good chat ya??

cheers all!

GSD being friendly is one thing. Does your GSD can take or withstand the tenacity and the activeness of a JRT tongue.gif as you know, Jack Russell is a BIG dog in a small body.

Jack russells can be taught of other tricks. Time and dedication is the keyword smile.gif both my jrts now are getting less time with me as i'm too darn busy. Check out groovy's blog and you can see what kinda tricks he can do. My Piper is lazy to learn new tricks already. Dookie now can stand on his hind legs for 10-15 secs and other commands like sit, stay, roll over n sit-stand

Im curious.. can a min pin become a JRT's playmate? I would agree with Nairud, trainning JRT needs alot of attention. In my case, the trainer is my gf and she's been very bz. So I would take over and practise with Shadow the lessons he learned during the OB classes. Like Groovemaster always say, must know what drives the dog to perform.. the food or the toy? Or it could be something that attract the attention of the dog most.

Ive seen dookie playin with somebody's min pin and that min pin is the alpha type or one that cannot lose type would growl and start a fight with dookie. get one that's playful and as tough as our rascals. If not it'll end up fighting

Hi,
I'm not sure if this is going to be helpful...but...
I've got a GSD as well..and he co-exists with 4 other dogs (dobe, bullmastiff, cocker mix, and a shih tzu mix). While he is friendly with all dogs,I worry abt the small ones as he plays very roughly with them. (with the exception of Groovy,he's a fiesty one! I can rely on him to teach my GSD some manners cool.gif ).
Otherwise,he loves playing with other dogs which can be a real headache when its time for training. rclxub.gif

Budget? There's always a budget issue. If you have 1.3k at your disposal, canon A710IS which comes with screen protector, 1gb SD card, pouch, small tripod. it's a 7mp camera
