Best time for females to be spayed is around 6 months. Check with your vet. ;-) It is good to spay your pet if you don't intend to have unwanted pups from her. Besides that, the operation has been known to reduce the occurrence of breast cancer in female dogs.

As for introduction of pups to the chow chow, it is best to be done in a neutral environment where neither dog (pup or chow chow) is dominant over. Perform the introduction as gently as possible. Watch for the dogs reaction if they intend to be aggressive over the dog.

Good luck. JRTs are known to be super active. I'm having a headache with my 10-month male pup who's undergoing "puberty" now. The female JRT is much more quieter.  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

Hi all,

This is Max, 6 month JRT.
A very hyperactive, naughty and persistant puppy.
He can sprint faster and longer than me.
Lol.

Hi Aragorn,

Do you send your 10month JRT to classes too?
Where you go?

Btw i thought of getting another JRT to accompany Max.
Any idea that you wanna share since you got two JRT too?

Thanks,

Hallooo... Sorry that I haven't replied to this thread. Been busy with work... cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

My 10-month old has not gone for classes. I've been trying to train him but looks like I will need to send him for obedience classes OR I need to do more walkies with him so that his energy will wear down low enough for me to train him. laugh.gif laugh.gif This fella knows "Sit" and a bit of "Stay". Can even "Beg" and "Speak" but can't seem to communicate well. He likes to nip people.

Well, some people will say getting a 2nd dog of different gender would be better. But in my case, with 1 male/female, both tends to fight a lot. The female is dominant, the male is aggressive. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif Now, the male has "urges" and will want to mount the female. I can't leave both dogs alone for a very long time because they will fight. So, the male is in the crate, while the other roams free. The male is crate-trained and so, accepts the crate as his bed and chill-out place.

Anyway, if you want to keep another dog; remember to introduce both in a neutral environment.

As usual with JRTs, you need a firm hand on both dogs!! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Hmmmm... The pup is crying to get attention. sweat.gif

If possible, turn on the radio and keep the sound level low so that the pup can hear it. I tried this technique with my dogs and it works! thumbup.gif

The thing is to ignore the crying as it's a cry for attention. If you are toilet-training your dog to pee/poo out of the house (in the garden or etc), better watch out for those "woof" sounds. Sometimes, those sounds are "alerts" to let you know that they need to go toilet! laugh.gif

Hope this helps you get more restful nights. tongue.gif

Never too young to toilet train. biggrin.gif The important thing about toilet training is to reprimand the wrong place of toilet and praise like crazy when they pee/poo at the right location. Of course, you got to catch the pup in action so that they can learn. smile.gif

Be prepared for A LOT of accidents. laugh.gif laugh.gif

My 10-month old boy used to pee outside his cage because he can "aim".

My female, when she was a puppy used to make accidents right near the door of the room because she cannot "tahan" anymore. rclxub.gif

Good luck. blush.gif

Wah. This one is a bit tricky. blink.gif I'm also having the same problems with my 10-month-old. rclxub.gif

Anyway, do you take your JRT out for walks? If so, I may suggest you try this...

1. Leash your JRT.
2. Have your JRT "sit and stay" before the gate is open. Have your hand on the leash. If your JRT pulls or tries to escape once the gate is open, have to correct and force them to sit.
3. Only allow them to go out when you give the command "OK" or you lead your JRT out.
4. Be patient. Have to keep trying until your JRT learns it.

I'm training my JRT to do this for all doors which he wants to go out from.

Other sifus... Any other suggestions?

From the MRDO, there are quite a number of Jack owners out there. It's better than what it was 4 years back when they couldn't recognize my Snoopy. biggrin.gif

flex.gif JRTs r hunting dogs n deir 1st instinct is to chase down anything that moves. Do not tempt fate by allowing your dog to run free at all times. JRT must be onleash when opening gates/ at areas with moving traffic.

aragorn has provided good training tips to gain some control over ur JRT, but bottom line is ur JRT shld b on leash as most have a tendency to run out of the front gates. JRTs feature highly on roadkill statistics.

JRT saying, 'The only thing small about a JRT is its size, everything else about it is larger than life.' flex.gif

Only manageable if u can provide plenty of exercise, play n training. With the right training, can be a good watch dog. However without supervision, may degenerate into excessive barking and become a nuisance to your neighbours. JRTs can bark fairly loud n r very persistent. whistling.gif
