The 18-250mm can be a good travel lens if you do not mind its drawbacks. It's quite prone to CA and lose sharpness after the 200mm mark. I dunno about you but I would prefer a wider end for travel but that's just me. You seldom actually use the tele end even when travelling. Of course if convenience is high on your list then the 18-250 can be the all-in-one. If I was the one going travelling now with all I have learnt over the years, I would pick the 16-50mm f2.8 lens for travel coupled with the A57. 16mm for the wide and 35 to 50mm for street and portraits. You could leave all tele lens at home and won't miss much.

Newbie to DSLR. Currently using a 8X zoom digital compact camera, am scared that I'll miss the 8X zoom.
18-250 is too noisy based on the video I posted above, but not sure about 16-105. 18-135 out of budget. tongue.gif

hi new friend. welcome to DSLR world, full of mystery, trolls, and haiding seafood... and always end up with torn wallet. tongue.gif

well, zoom is fun, but do know that, todays DSLR are like 16mp, that LOTS of Pixel, and due to its a DSLR, having an APS-C sensor which is roughly 8 times bigger then common compacts camera sensor, meaning the clarity (something like sharpness) is so great! so u can crop up to 8time, and the quality is still on par with a compact camera.

so here is a theory
if i have a 100mm (which is around 5x ratio to 18mm), and i can crop the image to 50%, i get about 10x, but retain a lot of sharpness about 8mp image. and when u upload to facebook, it only require maximum of 1.4mp, or when u develop out, u only require 1.3mp. so 6mp still overkill smile.gif

another thing, i assume u comparing the video means u plan to video something... if just comparing the sound, in real life, roadside cars, event hall speakers, restaurant chatty, all these noise are like 10times more then the focus drive, video or not, its hardly noticeable. unless u plan to shoot birds, but there are lens for birds.

btw, 18250 (and 16105) is the old screwdrive system, they generally known as causing massive noise in quiet environment. in kopitiam, u wont hear a thing.
the 1855 SAM and 18135 SAM is new SAM motor which is design mainly for a much more quiet focus drive for video.

18250, 2xxx
18135 combo with A57, top up 800. how can it be over your budget?

If looking at the lens(new) only, It is
SAL18250: RM17XX
SAL18135: RM22XX
Tamron 18-270 Dii PZD: RM19XX

I want good IQ, and the more zoom the better, and want to get the best bang for buck. brows.gif . The more reviews I see, the more confused to choose. rclxub.gif icon_question.gif

More zoom usually means more compromise on the image quality (IQ). There's a reason why lenses with shorter zoom range usually costs more with the exception of the kit lenses of course. Typically a lens with a 4x or 5x zoom has the best in terms of IQ. Any longer than that, you will see compromises like CA, edge sharpness going down the drain, vignette, distortion and so on.

It's common for someone relatively new to DSLR to want mega zooming abilities but this phase usually don't last long. Most learn that they do not really need such a large focal range as they tend to use only a few points along the whole range.

I have a few questions for you:

1. Is the superzoom the only lens you are going to bring on your travel?
2. Will you be bringing an external flash unit (e.g F43AM or F58AM) with you?

If the answer is yes for 1 and no for 2, then you will be in for a little rude awakening. During your travels, there will be times when you will be shooting in low light. You could be indoors somewhere or it may be evening. The 18-2xxmm lenses are f3.5 to f6.3 so that means low light is going to present a big challenge. Unless you are shooting at the widest end, you will find it difficult to get a decent shutter speed unless you jack up your ISO. Your tele end will be next to useless in situations like these.

During daytime with lots of sunshine, your tele end will be usable but then you would find that travel tends to favor the wide end of the focal range.

I've learned this lesson the hard way too. I bought a 18-250mm lens and went travelling. Lucky for me I also had a 50mm f1.7 and a flash unit at the time. When evening fell, the 50mm stayed on. When I came back I found that I used the 18mm end around 80% of the time and yearning for a wider angle. Thus I sold my 18-250mm, bought the A850 and a 20mm ultra wide angle lens and never looked back.

Now I use 3 primes for shooting. 20mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f2.8 and believe it or not, I very, very seldom want anything longer than my 85mm.

Of course that's just me and my little advise.

No wonder when I first saw the Hasselblad Lunar I thought it was a NEX-7 modded by some mod enthusiast. 2 dials side by side. Viewfinder at one corner, and dat hotshoe... looked suspiciously like a Sony.. hahahahahahaha

So is Sony venturing into medium format territory? This could be good news to you ieR!

Interestingly:

A900 = 6048x4032 JPG, 24385536 pixels = 24.3 megapixels
Divided by 1.5x = 4032x2688 = 10838016 pixels = 10.8 megapixels
However the specs say that APS-C mode is:
3924x2656 = 10422144 = 10.4 megapixels
Sensor size = 35.9x24.0mm
168.467 pixels/mm x 168 pixels/mm

A99 = 6000x4000 JPG, 24000000 pixels = 24 megapixels
Divided by 1.5x = 4000x2666 = 10666666 pixels = 10.6 megapixels
However the specs say that APS-C mode is:
3936x2624 = 10328064 pixels = 10.3 megapixels
Sensor size = 35.8x23.8mm
167.59 pixels/mm x 168.07 pixels/mm

A77 = 6000x4000 JPG, 24000000 pixels = 24 megapixels
Sensor size = 23.5x15.6mm
APS-C multiplier = 36/23.5 x 24/15.6 = 1.532x1.538

If the A99 was to crop to the exact sensor size of the A77, it should be:
6000*23.5/35.8 x 4000*15.6/23.8 = 3938x2621 = 10321498 = 10.3 megapixels

I was wondering why the A900 APS-C mode gives 11 megapixels while the A99 APS-C mode gives 10 megapixels, according to specifications. As it turns out, they are not that far off from each other.

So...
I think I'll get either the SAL18250 or the SAL18135.
Wait till I got a chance to try.
I normally shoot animals, insects, plants, and sumtimes gathering parties.

And here's a nice comparison I found:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp...essage=41772170http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1037&message=41772170

Really hope that the SAL18250 is able to get some upgrade like adding a SAM motor in these few days. tongue.gif
