Withdrawn 5000 bath from an ATM in Bangkok recently as I ran out of cash and Maybank charged me RM536. After deducting the RM10 processing fee, the exchange rate turns out to be 10.52, and with the RM10 fee the rate is 10.72. The MidValley exchanger rate on that day is 10.6. Since the processing fee is fixed, the more you withdraw, the rate will be better. If you intend to exchange more than RM1000, then ATM might be your better choice as you no need to travel far to MidValley to get the good rate. But beware, please only withdraw from international banks' ATM as local Thai banks will charge you extra 150 bath for their processing fee. I used Aeon ATM, which is widely available e.g in Big C, Terminal 21, etc.

I will share more tips in BKK when I have more time later.  thumbup.gif

Last year, if you withdraw money from CIMB bank, there won't be any fees. Just the exchange rates difference. Of course you have to have a CIMB bank account. Not sure whether this service is still free now. Any forummers can update on this maybe?

Although withdrawal at CIMB Thai ATM is free for CIMB MY customer, the rate isn't pretty.
I got 10.61 thru the ATM, when the moneychanger in KL is selling around 10.51.
And while in Jakarta, for IDR 1mil - RM330, when moneychanger in KL is around 322.

And for comparison sake, I did a withdrawal of same amount using CIMB & Maybank ATM card at HSBC in HK, same time same machine. The conversion rate of Maybank is 1.5% lower than CIMB.

More tips here:

If you are flying with AA, you will land at DMK airport. I strongly recommend to take the public taxi to the city as the rate is cheap. This is what you do when arriving:

1) Collect your luggage and exit the custom check.

2) You will see some taxi counters at the arrival hall, and the staff will ask you if you want a taxi. Just ignore them.

3) Walk straight to the exit door, and you will see this:

Attached Image

4) You will also see some other opt of transport to the city, but recommended to take the public taxi as it's cheap and convenient.

Attached Image

5) Exit the door and you will see more signs, it's impossible to get lost biggrin.gif

Attached Image

6) Here's the taxi counter, and the queue:

Attached Image

7) Once you reach the counter, just tell the attendant the location that you wanted to go, and he/she will pass you a receipt. No need to pay anything at this counter. The taxi driver will then bring you to his taxi.

8) Check that the meter is switched on and reset:

9) The driver might ask you if you wanna to take the express-way (toll) or not. I think it's worth to take the toll one.

10) Then sit back and enjoy.

11) Our journey to Tune Hotel Asoke took only around 30 minutes and the fare, including the 50 bath surcharge and the 45 batch toll, is only 280 bath thumbup.gif

Will share more in my next post smile.gif

May I also add:
1) One can take DMK airport bus to Mochit (BTS Mochit & MRT Chatujak) for THB30 or public bus for THB16.

Taxi from DMK to mochit station cost 100-150baht
Then another 40baht on sky train from mochit to national stadium station to get into Siam

Yup, this is another method but sometimes the Mochit station is so crowded with the visitors to Chatuchak and it will not be convenient if you have big luggages.

Also if you have 2 people or more in your group, consider the taxi to Mochit + BTS/MRT + walking with big luggages, it is still better to take the taxi directly to the city center. If you have 2 people, it will cost you around RM10 extra, and it will be cheaper if you have 3 or 4 people in your group smile.gif

Hi there guys. Will be travelling to Bangkok in Dec after 3 nights in Saigon. My flight will arrive close to midnight at Don Muang and I plan to stay for the night at the airport before checking in into my hotel the following morning. Is this doable? What is it like at Don Muang past midnight? If it is as busy as our LCCT, I think I will survive. Just scared that there will be very little souls around

This airport is much quiter than any other airport. Opposite there is a Amari airport hotel, maybe u can just hang around there by crossing the highway, but dont worry its safe to walk around the area during night.
